Irrelevant is very different from invisible. One implies lack of prejudice, the other implies the exact opposite.

Twisting words and pretending people said things they didn’t, in order to bully them, has always been a transactivist tactic as well as a narcissistic behaviour pattern.

Andrew Copson has been flogging this story about shady American money creating a powerful Christian far right network of influence in the UK for many years.

I rate Copson's credibility on this about as highly as the weather guy - he doesn't really have anything except speculation, insinuation and stereotypes, and even it if were true, they aren't doing a very good job of it.

But I suppose Copson has to raise alarms to keep the donations coming.

The argument over Proposition 8 was almost 20 years ago, and on the other side of the world, but apparently powerful enough to bend the space-time continuum and make people in present day Belfast speak hateful fascist dogwhistles like "yon window is a bit garish".

It will lead to a rise in homophobia because many people find the idea of sodomy revolting, even within a consensual relationship.

Gay rights were brought about by convincing people that gay relationships were harmless and normal and to do that, some of the disgust eliciting aspects of male homosexuality were left private, as consensual sexual practices should be. Your own business what you do in the bedroom, but don’t shove it in anyone’s face.

It is not homophobia to be disgusted by sodomy. People will find it a grim idea when practiced within heterosexual relationships. And many people simply don’t want sexual practices of any sort shoved in their face.

Paisley used that word deliberately to remind people of the things the rational gay community were leaving in the bedroom while asking for rights. Hence pushing that word to the forefront will elicit disgust, whichever side uses it.

I will repeat again, it is not homophobic to find weird and unhealthy sexual practices grim. Trying to normalize them will lead to backlash. Associating them with being gay will bring backlash against gays.

Similar to how the NOM (National Organisation of Marriage) developed a divide and conquer strategy against gay marriage by seeking to exploit ethnic divisions. And were stupid enough to detail this in their internal documents :

I mean some people jump naturally from phobia to phobia, no help needed, but for others a bit of organisation and push helps things along.

I agree with you that it's ugly, but I disagree with you that it's to do with 'wokeness' and 'gender identity'.

One of the positive things I said about the design of the window in my very first post on the subject was that I appreciated that it actually highlighted lesbians and gays, because it was lesbians and gays who campaigned for rights for same-sex attracted men and women.

That was back in the days when people were actually discriminated against - and suffered violence because of - their sexual orientation. 'Gender identity' as a thing hadn't been invented back then. I don't think 'woke' was a thing back then either.

So the window celebrates - garishly, I agree - the struggle of women and men who had to fight against actual discrimination, and just wanted the same rights as anyone else. They weren't fighting for any special treatment or extra rights, just the same as everyone else, and thankfully, in these parts of the world, we mostly have them. That's worth celebrating.

Obviously there are many parts of the world where being lesbian or gay is dangerous to the point of death, so we bear that in mind as we mark what we have achieved here.

It's not gender identity, and it's not wokeness, so I think you're misreading the historical context of the window.

I think it's very ugly. And a total waste of money at a time when people are turning away from this sort of virtue signalling. It's wild how out of touch some councils are - we don't want thousands, sometimes millions, of taxpayers money spent in deference to wokeness, and to an ideology that most of us don't subscribe to - i.e. 'gender identity'.

For the hard of understanding, at no point did I say that X was a barometer of public opinion, you made that inference all by yourself. It obviously suits your narrative, not mine.
