Have a listen to this BBC OS radio interview on the ban on men in womens sport. They are absolutely glorious to listen to - had the interviewer Mark Löwen tied up in knots and challenged his words beautifully.
From 26 minutes in.

So Mark Lowen is another gay man unable or disinclined to understand female athletes concerns and continues to centre male feelings? Quelle surprise.

Likely BBC doesn’t want Sharron and Mara’s very clear voices available to the wider public…

Strangerthanfiction123 · 07/01/2026 09:36

I clicked on another episode, is it possible that all these episodes have been removed? Seems unlikely from our unbiased national broadcaster 🤢🤔😂😵‍💫

Strangerthanfiction123 · 07/01/2026 09:13

I’ve tried that link a dozen times with no success, what was the program called?, tried all the names too no luck! TIA!

Sunnyjac · 06/01/2026 06:03

Thanks @Helleofabore I would love to hear the whole thing!

Helleofabore · 05/01/2026 09:43

My link above is to a stand alone version of the interview if anyone wants to listen.

Sunnyjac · 05/01/2026 09:35

I’ve been searching for it but also can’t find it ☹️

I am behind the party in this one. Sadly the beeb have removed the programme in the link by OP. This interview has just been discussed again this week in the Gliner update. Mark Lowen is also mentioned as he and his husband have just been to Canada to 'collect' their second child by same surrogate. Does anyone have any more info on Lowen and his views on women? (I am in discussion with an online friend about the harm of surrogacy.) Thanks for any input.

Is this it?

Finally two women, Sharron Davies and Mara Yamauchi, were interviewed. Whereas the day before, no lies were challenged and there was no concern for women, all of a sudden everything is challenged, including facts and why Sharron and Mara haven't priori...

Interesting that presenters have apparently been told not to use “cis” by the BBC.

KnottyAuty · 14/05/2025 20:03

Yep. Me too. I was irritated that they claimed there was equal time given to both parties. There obviously wasnt. Jessica and Steve had much more time and over 2 programmes. Just another indication of how much disdain they hold for simple facts I suppose? Weird for a newsroom

JulesJules · 14/05/2025 19:34

I got the same reply from the BBC in response to my complaint.

GailBlancheViola · 14/05/2025 11:44

We received a number of similar complaints

Then maybe you should listen to them BBC.

Sharron Davies and Mara Yamauchi were similarly asked to consider what they would say to transgender women affected by the rulings. This question was criticised by the majority of people who complained to the BBC.

Again, maybe you should take notice of that BBC.

So basically, their motivations (or at least, his motivation) are exactly what we have been saying - winning and validation. Nothing to do with the men's teams not being accepting of them.

I have to admit though that I did find that video quite compelling. Idk if it was the masculine voice combined with the confidence and how articulate he is. It was weird.

How anyone can listen to that video and not agree that some effects of male puberty are irreversible is beyond me.

@Kinsters I think that is a very different reply to what you would have received prior to the SC judgement.

The BBC have changed how they are reporting and the fact Sharon and Mara got to push back so strongly illustrates that.

Yes, I guess there are good parts in there. And you are right that Sharron and Mara even having a platform is great.

Disappointing, but not surprising, reply to my complaint to the BBC:

"Thank you for getting in touch about a series of interviews broadcast on the BBC World Service about the decision by two sports governing bodies to ban transgender women from competing in female sport.

We received a number of similar complaints and in order for us to fulfil our obligation of the effective use of Licence fee funds, we are sending a single reply which we hope addresses your concerns.

On May 1st 2025 BBC OS (presented by Mark Lowen) featured a report from BBC Sports correspondent Andy Swiss who explained that the FA had announced a ban on transgender women playing football in women’s teams. This was followed by an interview with a transgender woman ‘Jessica’ and her coach, Steve Fletcher, Solent Sports FC.

On May 2nd 2025 BBC OS (presented by Mark Lowen) spoke to BBC Sports reporter Nesta McGregor who told the programme about a ban on transgender women playing in women’s cricket teams. His report included a short clip from a transgender cricketer, Amelia Short. After that the programme played a short clip from the interview with ‘Jessica’ from the previous day before broadcasting an interview with Olympians Sharron Davies and Mara Yamauchi.

This is a complex and controversial topic which provokes a strong response from audiences on both sides of the argument. But having reviewed all the material, the programme editor is satisfied that the coverage was balanced overall.

Separating the guests over two programmes meant that both sides had the time and space to make their arguments in detail. Both sides were challenged by presenter Mark Lowen. For example he asked ‘Jessica’ and Steve Fletcher to consider the views of women who want a biological only space. He also put to them that the physical strength and hormone levels of transgender women give them an advantage over women.

Sharron Davies and Mara Yamauchi were similarly asked to consider what they would say to transgender women affected by the rulings. This question was criticised by the majority of people who complained to the BBC. However the editor considers it was an appropriate and reasonable question. The full interview ran to nearly twelve minutes. During this time both Sharron Davies and Mara Yamauchi were given plenty of time to make all their key points without interruption from Mark.

At one point Nesta McGregor mistakenly talked about the Supreme Court ruling on ‘gender’ when he should have said ‘sex’. Mark Lowen also used the term ‘cis women’ without attributing it. The BBC’s guidelines on the use of language around gender clearly explain the difference between ‘gender’ and ‘sex’ and that the term ‘cisgender’ should not be used unless attributed. The editor has reminded the programme team of these guidelines.

If you’d like to understand how your complaint is handled at the BBC, you might find it helpful to watch this short film www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaints. It explains the BBC’s process for responding to complaints and how we share the feedback we receive.

We appreciate you taking the time to get in touch.

Best regards,

BBC Complaints Team"

So far they have counted more than 20. And it is remarkable just how many seem to be in top scorer list! (not!)

But of course, those male footballers are all repeating ‘there is only 20 of us …’. This is how misinformation spreads. Another FA failure.

He admits in that video that he doesn't want to play in men's football because he couldn't compete at the required standard for a men's team. And that he wants the validation of being in a women's team.

There should be space in society for non-conforming men to live happily as themselves - but in men's spaces.

Wow I just found time to listen to this (having read the twitter summary first) and oh my days. Mara and Sharron were brilliant. What an appalling display of bias by the BBC. As a pp I have also written a complaint about the blatant bias and misogyny. It was galling to hear "Jessica" and coach Steve espouse their thoughts and feelings unchallenged by the interviewer in contrast to Sharron and Mara being asked "but what about the [men]???" no matter what they said. I also noticed the sly dig of "former Olympians". Surely, having competed in the Olympics, Sharron and Mara are simply "Olympians".

I found it especially shocking that when coach Steve asserted that he'd never had any reason to consider this issue until very recently that the interviewer didn't challenge this given the years (decades??) women have been campaigning about this. And also the assertion from the coach that this is a tiny tiny issue for a vanishingly small minority of people but that there are three TiMs that he coaches?!? Wtf. My head was spinning the whole time I listened to that.

Yes, i boggled at that too.

i guess “Jessica” is a former women’s footballer 🤷‍♀️

I just wish more people could listen to this. 'Jessica' just sounded male as well as 'Rachel' was it?

The interviewer was just nuts, and strangely out of his depth on something so simple. No answer to the 'what if I wanted to race with under 10s because of my mental health?'.

This seemed to just be, 'Oh but come on, this man is upset, it's just one or two men in women's sport, why can't you just be nice?'.

icelollycraving · 09/05/2025 10:39

I don’t often reply on this part of mn but I do read it. Thanks for this link. Such articulate viewpoint from the women. Particularly enjoyed them saying about mental health, so if an adult wants to compete in a different age range/ paralympics etc for their mh, it would be disallowed.

KnottyAuty · 09/05/2025 10:01

I flagged exactly that in my complaint. The time spent, the type of questioning, the style of questioning and the choice of people to interview - all deeply sexist.

I asked why they hadn't asked a man on to explain how regular teams would be working hard to be inclusive - Steve the coach actually had some great ideas on this and it would have been good to have had a discussion on that to help other clubs put better offers in place.

Yes that section kind of came across like "there are these solutions but it's unreasonable that we should even consider them". The whole segment felt like a load of blokes standing around scratching their heads saying "I'm not quite sure what they're shrieking about or why it matters but let's have a go at discussing it".

KnottyAuty · 09/05/2025 10:01

Kinsters · 09/05/2025 07:57

If anyone has not listened to the full interview with "Jessica" it is on the same program on 1 May (also at 26 minutes and 30 seconds in). I would suggest you do listen to it (if you can stomach it) just to really drive home how horrifically biased this coverage is. You'll notice that "Jessica's" program doesn't have 5 minutes at the begining devoted to hearing from women. And there's no advertisement at the end to tune in tomorrow to hear from Sharron and Mara.
