So how would your friend talk about genetic disorders like haemophilia or fragile X syndrome?

When he talks about pregnancy and fertility treatment does he understand that there is a name for the people who provide the eggs and have to gestate the babies, and that they have something in common with the patients who say they think they might have endometriosis or are experiencing debilitating menopause symptoms.

Does he understand that these things have a wider impact on people's lives, and might necessitate 'sex' specific rights?

Can he see that none of this is related to whether you identify as masculine or feminine?

[To be fair, I suspect he just hasn't thought about any of it. The BMA on the other hand...]

I really wouldn't be too worried.

The judgment clearly explains the definition of sex it is using to provide clarity and workability to that law.

Now let's test what 'sex' is in law, because emotive pleading and cod science won't wash there. Lets let Lord Winston take the stand and talk to an impartial judge. That'll take a few years to organise and get into a court room during which time the judgment will have stood.

Edited to add: If you're terrified that apparently qualified doctors are this insane and you might have to be treated by one who doesn't believe in sex and therefore may put you at serious risk because in treatment it matters...? I wholly see your point.

We have always known that some people think women shouldn't have rights -but these doctors are at the very least licensed to prescribe medication.

I honestly don't think these doctors have the analytical skills to do that.

It is horrific how many people seriously seem to believe that women should lose rights including their humans rights so that men aren't sad and incommoded in their desire to abuse them.

Becausing demanding to be where a non consenting woman is in a state of undress because it somehow meets the man's needs is abusing them .

There is actually a man on another thread wailing that to have to use men's toilets and changing room is against his human rights as it's humiliating to undress in front of men and he doesn't want to be exposed to the male gaze.... with apparently no sense of irony. I really hadn't plumbed the depths of how inhuman women really are in modern Britain.

Bring on the court case proving that sex is real and binary, it's going to have to happen. As with that X thread today, the GI lobby may find it ends up reaching a very, very inconvenient conclusion that is then fixed into law.

I (GP) mentioned this to my BMA-member colleague (an actual GP, not a resident dr, not young) at work today in a “have they lost their minds?” kind of way and when I read out the motion he told me that it sounded reasonable to him. I think he mainly thinks that he has no skin in the game. He’s never been very supportive of my openly feminist/GC stance at work but I’m tolerated - I didn’t realise he’d actually drunk the koolaid though. Very strange times we live in.

Sound late like the motion will be voted on by the whole BMA in June?

I have just had a look. You are doing a sterling job of countering some pretty batshit statements. The levels of cognitive dissonance are off the scale. The fact the only outlet that has picked this story up is Pink News, with their source being a twitter thread that doesn’t @ the BMA (it only says #BMA) suggests it’s probably fake.

Other outlets have had plenty of time to verify it by now, and it would be an amazingly lucrative story to break, so I doubt it’s real.

That said, perhaps the BMA is scrambling behind the scenes after a call from the Times to find out exactly what meetings the junior doctors were holding and what the hell they have done.

So I guess it’s amusing either way, really.

You can't but they have some very useful services they offer us as well as the rubbish. I'm still waiting for my pension to be sorted with respect to the McCloud review so I'm staying because of that only then I'm out. It's a shame because they are a great source of information, employment guidance and have supported doctors in difficulty but since the pandemic they have changed for the worse. They also have some brilliant educational courses so I wouldn't say being a member means the doctor is bad but we need an alternative

Can you check if a doctor is a memeber of the BMA? I wouldn't take the advice of any of these medics seriously. I think I'd rather see the vet

It's because people think about sex in terms of identity and status, and forget that it has practical consequences.

'Man' is the default, and his role in sexual reproduction is limited to having a shag.

I can't think about this too much because it makes my head explode. I'm so impressed with all the women who have fought this battle. But I still need an explanation for how we got here.

@Merrymouse I'm sure it was said by one clinic that a frequent question was that after "transition" many young people believed they would be the opposite sex and be able to father a child if they were female and that males would be able to become a biological mother to a child.

I don't understand how teenagers can get to that age and not understand that this would be impossible. Perhaps the Science curriculum needs to be looked at and any gender woo fairy stories that have crept in removed.

I think they just don't step back and consider why we define sex.

Or perhaps they advise their patients that anyone could have a period or become pregnant.
