Nursery Pride face painting

Went to pick up three year old from nursery.
Staff and all kids in her class had rainbows painted on their faces.
“nice rainbows” I said. Staff said “we’re celebrating Pride”.

Is this normal? The timing seems odd - it’s not Pride week is it?

I might point out that three of the world’s major religions regard rainbows as a symbol of God’s covenant with mankind after the Flood, and that as a Christian I hope that that story was told as well. Otherwise it is a sacred symbol being appropriated….

😂😂😂😂 the fucking oblivious hypocrisy of religious people will never not be funny

Remember the Pride rainbow has six colours, it is missing indigo found in traditionally seven coloured rainbows.

Do to the current backlash a lot of gay people don't associate with the rainbow, they're beyond it. Really it's just another over-commercialised symbol now.

I'm a lesbian and Pride has nothing to do with me.

ClearHoldBuild · 26/04/2025 20:29

If my preschool child had a rainbow painted on their face I would take it as just that, a rainbow. I highly doubt that preschoolers were given a lecture on Pride and the LGBT community. And even if they were, at three years old I wouldn’t be bothered Most likely they just wanted to paint rainbows.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 26/04/2025 20:22

Nope, not acceptable. I’d be writing to complain to both the Head and Chair of Governors OP.

Can't quote it. Here's a screenshot.

Genuinely, why do we have Pride days/weekends etc? Being gay is mainstream now, why is it such a big deal?

I wish it was, but I don’t think we are there yet. And at the very least our society is still very heteronormative - people keep asking me if my DS ‘has a girlfriend yet’ …and on here there is always presumption when a woman posts about her DP here that her partner is a man. My gay friends say it’s quite exhausting feeling like they’re having to come out every time they meet a new person eg tradesperson at the house/ new hairdresser / new colleagues, as the default is people talking to you have a presumption that you’re straight.

I used to think this. I don't know anyone who would think twice about someone being gay. It's a privileged situation to be in to be honest.

Homophobia is still around. In all of our living memories, gay people have fought and won rights that they should have had all along.

It's lucky for you that you are in a situation where you see homosexuality as mainstream, but that's certainly not the case everywhere.

Finding opportunities to show children from the start that being gay or having two mums or whatever is normal is really important.

Not long ago, when I was teaching, a little boy asked his Dad at the Christmas fair if he could have his nails painted at the Y6 stall. His Dad replied, "No you can't you little f*ggot."

I'll never forget it. Blistering homophobic cruelty.

So back to the rainbow face paint. I'll say it again. Take it at face value. The staff aren't teaching the children about scissoring. It'll be that face paint a nursery-accessible way of starting to introduce children to that people can love who they want.

You're the ones conflating being gay with the trans agenda.

The staff aren't making it political. You are.

Arran2024 · 26/04/2025 18:58

Thing is, it's a logo to all intents and purposes. It's like brand recognition. I remember when people were concerned that more kids in America knew Ronald McDonald than Jesus's. Kids are being brought up to know the trans flag and associate it with fun, know that their care givers approve of it, without understanding what it means.

I think it’s more about teaching toddlers and preschoolers that families come in different shapes and ways, rather than sexuality.

Which can be and is done all across the country without “celebrating” Pride.

EweSurname · 26/04/2025 18:43

Weightloss12 · 26/04/2025 18:32

I kind of see it as toddlers don’t need to understand sexuality, they’re toddlers, they will and they will get there, but 3 and 4 year olds? That said it wouldnt anger me and I would just say, oh okay and move on with my day.

That would be the last time I’d have taken my children there.

The staff can celebrate their beliefs without involving children.

Agreed. No way would I have that agenda pushed on a child.

It’s caused by water droplets and sunlight. It’s a natural occurrence ‘appropriated’ by lots of different groups.

lnks · 26/04/2025 18:28

I have zero problem with my children learning about the LGB. I have a problem with the rainbow flag because it has constantly been waved in our faces by TRAs whilst they trample all over the rights of women and girls. I do not want my daughter to have anything to do with an ideology that would deny her basics rights and dignity.

SirChenjins · 26/04/2025 18:08

It’s not demented to not want pre-schoolers to be painted with a symbol that has become synonymous with an ideology that has trashed women’s rights.

Thisshirtisonfire · 26/04/2025 18:00

This thread is demented.
I cannot see the issue with this at all. Its like you actively want to find something to be outraged about

You can get interrogate the theoretical implications of symbols if you like, but at face value, this is a nursery painting rainbows on the faces of children who presumably have face painting consent.

Taking it to this extreme makes us all look hysterical homophobes, and it not helpful to the cause fought for by the women on this forum.

Maybe. I think there would have been far less to fight in the first place had there not been a wholesale elision of anything rainbow with moral virtue. And, like with the mandatory poppy or institutionalised prayer, objecting to something on principle even when that’s an unpopular view can sometimes be the right thing. Deciding based on what’s a good look isn’t always best.

The thing I most dislike here is the pinning of political views on children (even views I support). The pride flag is actually one I like, as an adult, which already marks me out as a wrongthinker as it’s not the progress one.

Peregrina · 26/04/2025 16:17

I had never heard of or seen the thin blue line flag. I see it was meant to commemorate fallen officers - a worthy enough aim, but once again, usurped by other groups for their own purposes.

The nursery will be expected to celebrate LGBT +, different cultures etc. It will be part of their Ofsted assessment. All nurseries will do this or a variation on it. My daughter works in a nursery and it is pushed hard, even though parents do complain.

How inappropriate for three-year-olds to be involved in celebrating other people's sexual preferences (I assume none of the children themselves identify as LGBT at this point). Yes, you can teach them that some people have two dads or whatever, but they don't need to celebrate Pride.

Justfreedom · 26/04/2025 16:05

Its just a small face painting it would not bother me.

I have a small rainbow window sticker in my window it dont mean anything i just like it.

Arran2024 · 26/04/2025 15:55

bigknitblanket · 26/04/2025 15:15

Pushed hard by who?

In her nursery there are several lesbian parent couples who are very loud in demanding LBGT+ content. The management like to please parents where possible - it's a fairly upmarket nursery with demanding parents but there is a limit to what they can do to meet their demands. This is an easy win for the nursery - the parents who want it are happy and the rest stay quiet, often aren't bothered.

They don't do face painting btw. I'm not saying all nurseries do this, but they definitely promote a range of cultures and lifestyles as per Ofsted and need to be able to demonstrate it.
