A thread to gather politicians' responses to yesterday's Supreme Court judgement.

  1. Stella Creasy. She's rather unhelpfully posted a pdf, (and turned off replies), so archive below.

Ed Davey on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg this morning was concerned that the judgement could mean that men will now say they are transmen to access womens single sex spaces.

This is the most disingenuous argument of the whole stupid debate.

As if it wasn't way easier for a man to pretend to be a trans woman than to pretend to be a trans man.

Do these politicians think the rest of us are as stupid as they obviously are?

I wish I had left the Lib Dems in the "irredeemable wankers" box I put them in after tuition fees and never given them a second chance. They certainly won't be getting a third.

Last year, for the first time ever, the Lib Dems came within touching distance of ousting the Tories in my constituency, and I refused to help them. I couldn't quite bring myself to vote for the Tory candidate, but I'm glad he won.

needmoresheep · 27/04/2025 09:39

So Ed Davey wants women to provide to the solution to the problem that men have created. Ladies get back to the kitchen and be kind bollocks. Typical phallic drift and male privilege shite even from him.

spannasaurus · 27/04/2025 09:35

TheOtherRaven · 27/04/2025 09:32

I wonder what Ed's solution to this might be?

I think that it might be that in order to prevent men pretending to be women pretending to be men out of womens spaces we must accept men who pretend to be women in them

It's quite astonishing* how many Righteous folx have suddenly remembered the existence of female persons-of-gender since the SC ruling.

*Not astonishing in the slightest.

endofthelinefinally · 27/04/2025 09:34

Carla Denyer clearly has no idea what the point of the Supreme Court is.

So labour have 59 lgbt+ MPs out of 403. Just shy of 15% - it seems like alot.

SameyMcNameChange · 26/04/2025 13:32

The week at Westminster on Radio 4 covered this today. I only caught the tail end. Christine Jardine was on and seemed to be acknowledging that single sex spaces were a good thing.

rebmacesrevda · 26/04/2025 13:17

To illustrate the problem, here's a man who pretended to be a paramedic in order to violate women. I'm detecting a theme here...

Anyone can call themselves ‘doctor’ - like ‘Dr Smith’ - can’t they? I can’t see how ‘nurse’ could be any different.

The issue must be that someone holds themselves out to be a practising, qualified medic, isn’t it? In which case there are already rules and offences in place.

To misquote Blakey from On The Buses…“You’re a half-wit Butler!”

It could be different. Health professions such as physiotherapist, paramedic etc. are protected titles. Misuse of title is a criminal offence. I believe "registered nurse" is a protected title but "nurse" is not, but the general public mostly wouldn't realise there's a difference. It's an issue of public protection and safeguarding.

Carla Denyer was on Sky News last night confirming that the Green Party policy is TWAW

Well, they can have as many policies as they like, as long as they don't infringe the law by acting on them.

This is important and shows how BADLY the TAs have lost. Only 4 will say the words.

Trying to bully MPs in 2025 is going to backfire. How many of the 59 are going to or were already peaking. Thanks Penisnews once again your sexism backfires.

You had your chance with the SNP and you destroyed your own side.

That is quite funny (I mean, fair play, serious subject, but quite amusing timing). Is she getting called out on the obvious similarities?

WS: 'I think what the Supreme Court ruling does is two things - one is to be clear that when it comes to sex and gender The Equality Act makes a distinction
between those two things. Sex relates to biological sex and people's gender
identity may differ from their biology, and secondly we can and must uphold the
rights the freedoms the spaces for women, uh, as sexbased rights, and also take care of trans people and uphold their freedom and respect'.

Does the EA actually talk about 'gender identity'? Does it define it?

No, section 7 is about ‘gender reassignment’
‘A person has the protected characteristic of gender assignment if the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person’s sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex’

One might question what said attributes of sex are and how this could be reassigned but this is not quantified/qualified in any way as far as I can see. Indeed, the SC judgement para 89 and 90 explicitly noted that this is evidenced by documents for the purposes of a GRC, and there is no guidance on what are male/female names and what it means to live in an acquired gender beyond the person’s name.

The SC judgement mentions ‘gender identity’ once, in paragraph 203 to make the point that they could see no reason why the legislature would have intended that people with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment should be treated differently depending on whether they have a (confidential) certificate, ‘even though in many (if not most) cases there will be no material distinction in their personal characteristics, either as regards gender identity or appearance …’

The GRA 2004 uses the term ‘acquired gender’ in the context of gender dysphoria. One would have to go back to the drafting stage of this to see if the phrase ‘gender identity’ was used (if I recall correctly, the term predates 2004), but these documents won’t be released until early 2030s depending when they date from (because of the thirty year rule on govt papers), but the legislation does not use it nor does the SC judgement.

Wes Streeting is an interesting character.

He's a proper working class boy from the East End, who got good grades and went to Cambridge. Although he's polished up pretty nicely, you can still hear his cockney accent and I imagine he would have stuck out like a sore thumb as an 18 year old next to all the posh kids at Cambridge. His family background is interesting to say the least, which probably makes him pretty streetwise because he'll have seen things that his middle class colleagues in their privileged bubbles won't have seen.

I wonder whether the fact that he's gay made him instinctively pro LGBTQ+ everything and less empathetic towards women in the way that a lot of gay men are, but his colourful background meant that the points made by gender critical feminists hit home with him in a way that they didn't with his colleagues. Perhaps the fact that his own grandmother did time in prison gave him more of a conscience about female prisoners, for example.

Anyway, I am pretty impressed with him at the moment and a future Labour party under his leadership might get my vote. (But I said the same thing about Starmer in the wake of Brexit.)

Dont worry @MissScarletInTheBallroom before my eyes were opened - late in the day to my shame - I thought Nandy might have been a good leader!!!
