Terf signals/colours

Really? That's insane. Modern connections aside the suffragettes fought for women's rights and should be respected.

I think transpeople should be able to wear what they like (not explicit stuff in public) and I also believe men have no place in womens spaces, places etc however they identify. Terf as a slur means trans exclusionary rad fem. I am not a rad fem and nor am I trans exclusionist (indeed, I count transmen as women, poor souls). When I use it I see it as meaning someone opposed to the misogyny and homophobia of the trans movement. I see why you do not like the term and prefer GC, however.

I'm in two minds about 'terf', I think I'd use it more as a verb than a noun and I have a fondness for the terven.

I wear a RSPB wren badge on my hat, have a bag and a t-shirt from Grimbut gerbils.

I wear two badges on my school lanyard - one in suffragette colours and a dinosaur one. I doubt anyone knows why though!

Although I dont call myself a terf if anyone else does I point out I'm tired of explaining reality to fantasists - although I may use the shorter fools in future. I've never warn badges but I'm very tempted by the etsy dinosaur with the books.

I’m uneasy about terf too - it normalises an offensive slur and requires people (women) whose beliefs are rooted in fact and biological reality to play along with it. Perfectly happy to accept some men wish to present their idea of womanhood to the world through their dress, but that anlso needs to include reining in their inherent male entitlement. Keeping their male bodies out of single sex spaces is such a simple thing to do - but that inherent entitlement bestowed upon them from birth overrides their ability to do so.

I’m not keen on “reclaiming” slurs- in the same way I don’t use “queer”. The only word I am happy to add to “feminist” is “radical.” I’d like to find a way to express gender critical views the isn’t “trans exclusionary”. I don’t want to exclude trans people- I want to find a way of co existing. Difficult though that is proving to be.

I’m a proud Terf and have a scarf in suffragette colours from Let Women Speak, which I wear often. I’d like a Terf tartan scarf too but haven’t got round to buying one.

@CurlewKate I have these issues too, but don’t think mine would clock vintage suffragette stuff as connected to current travails. I have a tiny Dinny Hall suffragette necklace, but it really is almost invisible. . I am very tempted by the heretic necklace on a site referenced upthread. Maybe that could actually be thought provoking in a useful way . My youngest believed herself trans for some time and has very close friendships with some transidentified young people. I think she is starting to feel quite uncomfortable as her feminist consciousness continues to be raised . I understand her loyalty to her friends, and I don’t want her to think I hate them, because, of course, I don’t. Just hate the damage that’s been done to them.

Reclaiming the word Terf makes me very uneasy.

It wasn’t just a slur - there were (and still are) large groups of men literally calling for Terfs to be raped and killed - it was more akin to a fatwa than a slangy slur.

Women have lost too much - jobs, careers etc to suddenly start to be encouraged to wear it as a jokey label - there is nothing funny about being labelled a Terf.

Having recently suffered two extremely traumatic experiences when some bright spark decided to mix the sexes (including putting a trans women in the next bed to me and psychotic man opposite me) in the hospital ward - I am very much looking for a badge that doesn’t act as a call to violence.

I would prefer something like:

Bio woman
I Am Woman

I’m sure better labels will emerge.

I would wear such a badge next to the DNR badge

I have a small baryonyx on my lanyard. And I quite often dress in green white and violet (give women votes!)

@hurdigurdiI am, by many people’s standards, quite mildly gender critical. But I don’t believe that TWAW. My DD finds this incredibly upsetting- in the same way that I would have been upset if my own much loved mother had been overtly racist. So the only way we can maintain a relationship we both value is to put the whole subject in a box and lock it away. I suspect that part of her distress is that she genuinely believes that TWAW-but also she knows that I am progressive and liberal in my views, brought her up to be too and was an active and visible campaigner in the past and she has always been proud of having a Greenham Common/Gay Pride marching/Rock against Racism/MilliTant mother. She just can’t get her head round what feels like huge cognitive dissonance.

World athletics have just introduced mandatory testing for all womens categories - Halle bloody lujah - surely the beginning of the end of all the nonsense

oh and I’d respond to “accusations” that I’m a terf with a clarification that I consider myself a MERF. (M being male).

Me too! And as such, I am going to crochet a little dinosaur in suffragette colours (a terfosaurus?). And add a "Rights!" poster to its paws (great idea up-thread).

I agree though, they’re not really feminists if they centre TW men in any way.

They really aren't. They might try to claim the term 'feminist' for themselves but they can't claim that men are women and claim to support women. One or the other. The two cannot co-exist.
