Spiked’s O’Neill on Dylan Mulvaney’s Creepy Sexism

Read it because the whole is well-written and quotable.

This is all from Mulvaney’s new book, Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer. It is – and I choose my words advisedly – batshit insane. It traces his ‘gender journey’ from being a gay boy to being nonbinary before he eventually arrives at ‘girlhood’. And then the holy land: womanhood. He’s definitely a woman now because he is ‘blonde and my tits [don’t] need a magnifying glass to be seen’. Plus, he loves pink. At one point he pulls on ‘the pinkest… outfit I own’, thinking that ‘the more feminine’ he appeared, the less likely it is he’ll be ‘misgendered’. Blonde hair, big boobs and a pink dress? Woman!
…

Some people will bristle at my use of male pronouns for Mulvaney, but if you think I’m saying ‘she’ and ‘her’ about someone who’s so obsessed with his own schlong that he has a name for it – ‘Missy’ – then you must be off your rocker. ‘I am a woman with a penis’, he writes. Can we take a second to marvel at the sheer delirium of a statement like that? A hundred years ago if you said ‘I’m a woman with a penis’, you’d have been quietly shuffled off to Bedlam. Now you get an advance from Hachette and a birthday card from the vice-president of the United States.

Apparently despite a massive publicity tour, plugs in, amongst others, Rolling Stone and Spiked Grin, endorsements on the cover by Kristin Chernowith (one so anodyne I'm pretty sure she hasn't read it) and Munro BergdorfHmm and all those millions of followers on TikTok someone reckons the book may have sold about 300 copies on amazon.

If you wish to read the Rolling Stone article, the photographer, or the person who picked the shots to illustrate it really did a number on Dylan in the 2nd picture. The shoulders, the massive feet and hands, Dylan really looked like what Dylan is...in a 👗

I have a really visceral reaction to that - men affecting the speech patterns and mannerisms of girls. When they mimic grown women they just look exaggerated and unconvincing, but when they mimic young girls it's actually nauseating.

I hated that so much.

Do you remember that Nike campaign that had the strapline 'run like a girl's with girls running really fast.

Disgusting misogyny.

You’re right, it was disgustingly misogynistic. And the infuriating reaction of the mainstream media (and the liberal gentry) was to reprimand any women who objected to his misogynistic behaviour.

We were told we had to “be kind” and refrain from objecting to his outrageous portrayal of sexist stereotypes.

Why does the culturally dominant element of western society approve of his sexist antics rather than supporting women trying to fight these sexist stereotypes?!

He actually makes me shudder, he's so creepy. That sports ad he did was particularly repulsive. The one which showed him prancing and capering about girlishly as though that's how women do sport Hmm

His mum was probably a terf even before her offspring went -sproing, but now she certainly can't help it!

I find that life is much easier to navigate if you assume that everything Rory Stewart believes is a lie.

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 14/03/2025 18:22

I can’t stand this man, but even more I can’t stand Rory Stewart calling him a ‘she’ as if it was all normal.

SionnachRuadh · 14/03/2025 18:07

I think the creepiness is that this isn't just the usual case of a man trying act "femaleness" based on sexist stereotypes. It's that Dylan's persona is all about "girlhood", and the stereotypes he's drawing on seem to be based on the annoying lead character in a Disney tween sitcom.

It's a bit like Elliot Page adopting an unconvincing persona of a pre-teen boy, except that Page comes across as desperately sad rather than creepy.

I laughed at your post wrt the use of 'quietly shuffled off to Bedlam' because it's true.
It would be funny if the whole subject weren't so incredibly sad- and infuriating.

Some women as a result of birth trauma have a fistula (a connection) between the bladder and uterus so can leak urine vaginally.

Somehow I don’t think that’s what Dylan is thinking of though.

No one pees voluntarily from their vagina!

RethinkingLife · 14/03/2025 17:26

Treaclewell · 14/03/2025 14:08

I know why he thinks women pee out of our vaginas. It's because he has a dual purpose organ for both peeing and sex. Logical that women should be similarly designed. But no, we are much better designed to keep things separate. Ignorant fool didn't listen in school.

Same level of biology and understanding on display here in a comic by a Little e’. I consider the conflation of clitoris and penis functions to be intentional and part of a drive to undermine public understanding of relevant issues.

It's not just Dylan's very male view of anatomy, it's that Dylan combines performative "girlhood" with being so proud of his cock that he's given it a pet name.

I can't help thinking of that fun old movie Soapdish. One of the massive red flags that Cathy Moriarty's character isn't what she seems is when she refers to her genital area as "Mr Fuzzy". Robert Downey Jr, being a clueless man, doesn't catch on.

DeanElderberry · 14/03/2025 15:16

He was so much better as Dilly the Humanoid Opossum

'At first glace they look about identical'

SiobhanSharpe · 14/03/2025 14:15

So not surprised. Dylan is the griftiest grifter.

Scout2016 · 14/03/2025 14:14

Dylan and "little girls are kinky" Alok were both in Edinburgh for the Fringe last year, doing well researched shows about climate change and some interesting progress made in early detection of ovarian cancer...
I jest, of course! Their shows were all about them. It's a wonder the city didn't implode implode under all their self obsession and bullshit. Was most pleasing to see some of their massive inane posters had been improved by LWS stickers. Maybe it's the stickers that held everything together.

Almahart · 14/03/2025 14:09

He is such a wierd freaky little grifter isn't he. I think all the early videos of 100 days of girlhood have been taken down, but they were kind of mindblowing.

Now now, did you lose a pillow fight or something? Most unladylike language too.

Wrong time of the century

I wonder how much detail Lily us given in the book overall, aside from being his cheerleading prop? Just a very cursory mention of "she's got work and a family" but only in relation to the impact on him, because it means she's of limited use. What with having her own life, and presumably an actual proper job.

Lily goes back to the UK - her husband is British.

Scout2016 · 14/03/2025 13:50

@CapabilityBrownsHaHa ha, snap!

DeanElderberry · 14/03/2025 13:41

yeah well my best friends can fuck off with that one.

Are these baths before or after the pillow fights wearing nothing but lingerie? I keep forgetting - so sorry....

And I'm afraid to say that due to the angle of that photo, his neck to head ratio has a touch of the Christiano Ronaldo's about it!

Edit for typo

Scout2016 · 14/03/2025 13:39

Did you guys know you're meant to be having "best friend baths" with your mates? That memo never made it to be so I am definitely womaning wrong.

Still dissappointed with Judy Blume but it's hard to stay mad at her.
