Does anyone else resent the gender/ TERF wars?

I met up with an old friend last night. The first two hours were magical! Everything was going great until the "what is a woman?" question popped up... Then, it all turned sour, and I don't think she and I will be catching up again for a long time.

Basically, whilst I think women's rights are paramount and should be defended whenever necessary, I'm really starting to resent the impact this had on my real life.

I have lost friends over this, and I've likely been stopped from making more too!

Does anyone else feel this way?

I resent that people are still banging on about the TERF ears and won't just let trans people live in peace.

I have two tran friends, both lovely people who want nothing more than to live their lives in peace but face abuse on an almost daily basis and the fact that people can't just leave them alone and let them live their lives in a way that makes them happy when they aren't harming anyone pisses me off. I resent the fact that most people here would relish in calling them men lapping as women, men in dresses, male bad actors and all sorts of other insults because it is cruel.

Well, they are larping. And does living their lives in peace mean entering women's sex segregated spaces? Because if so, they will certainly get abuse because those spaces are women's and we fought hard to get them, and we will be mean about not sharing them with men - that was the point, after all.

Thanks for all the responses. It's bittersweet to know that I'm not alone with this!

You’re really really not

HOW FUCKING DARE I at least five times over?

You need to get a grip. Thankfully I don't need your permission to dare to have an opinion.

Edited

How dare you use woman-face and break women's boundaries.

LARP is actually an incredible creative outlet full of incredibly intelligent, imaginative people. The level of imagination it takes to write, create and participate on fantasy LARPs is on another level and the fact you think they need props because they lack imagination shows you don't understand the hobby at all.

I really don't understand why you think LARPers lack empathy?

Why don't they become playwrights?
Battle re-enactment is carefully researched too. People like to be using the correct battle axe for the period.

The LARPers I've known have been genuinely live action and spend lots of time (and yes, creativity) researching costumes, accessories, artefacts, based not on fantasy but on history. Interestingly, not on other cultures - LARPers pretending to be Indigenous people would be called out on it because by pretending they can 'be' a member of another culture just by playing dress-up they show how much they, at bottom, despise the other culture. Same for people who play at having a gender identity expressed through stereotypes.

The unawareness of how offensive that is shows their lack of imagination and/or empathy. The research and creativity are expended on things. See also the enthusiasm for LARPing civil wars - that doesn't happen when people still remember those wars, or even remember the friends and family who lived through them. Playing at war is deeply questionable. As is playing at being a member of the opposite sex.

What you are describing is battle re-enactment. Battle re-enactment and LARP are generally considered separate hobbies by the people who partake in them.

Battle re-enactment is a replay of history.

LARP is about creating worlds and characters and building stories interwoven with all of your friends stories to create something epic. It's is absolutely dripping with emotions from the whole spectrum, there's laughing, there's crying, not playing crying, real crying because the emotions hit so hard when you're fully immersed.

Battle re-enactment is not particularly imaginative as you are replaying history to immerse yourself in the past. You simply cannot describe LARP as unimaginative or unempathetic. If you do, you are merely demonstrating you don't understand it and have never experienced it.

If they had some extreme views then sure. People I choose to associate with tend to be pragmatic and sensible though rather than tub-thumping idealists or extremists.

Maybe it is that women's sex based rights and protections are not a deeply foundational matter for you in the way they are for some? Along with a refusal to go along with coerced speech etc. I just know, personally, that if someone bought into all of that it would become a huge issue for me - one that would create a desire to cool things and slip away from the relationship. My relationships need to be reflective of me, and my values.

Absolutely, using opposite sex spaces is wrong, whatever you might imagine your 'gender identity' to be.

LARPing is an interesting way of thinking about that is happening. I have always had the impression that people who spend their holidays or weekends acting out 'being medieval' or 'being in the civil war' are intelligent (often highly intelligent) but with something missing - empathy? imagination? - that leaves them wanting to fill that gap with meticulous physical reconstructions that they make as 'accurate' as possible.

It's as though they cannot get into another mental space without props. And not being able to get into another mental space leaves them unaware of how far astray they can go. And in the case of gender LARPers, how offensive they are.

You can assume whatever you like, it doesn't.ake you right.

I am refusing to engage with you in any way because you are extremely hostile, not because your are correct. You are also clearly entrenched in your rage so it would be a waste of my time to try to convince you any other way.

Carry on ranting into the void, no one is answering.

So are your friends using female spaces? Expecting people to refer to them as female?

Glitterknickerbockers · 13/03/2025 10:08

DeanElderberry · 13/03/2025 08:13

To be fair, there was nothing to suggest that @Glitterknickerbockers friends would ever do anything like that, and if they just live in the way they think someone of their adopted 'gender identity' 'should' then the only really damaging thing they are doing is pushing sex role stereotypes, which I personally think is harmful to society, but we could debate that, and it is still possible to ignore that nonsense.

Thank you, my friends are very normal people, I'm not interested in socialising with anyone who spews vitriol online, including people like @WillIEverBeOk.

Glitterknickerbockers · 13/03/2025 10:06

WillIEverBeOk · 13/03/2025 08:18

True. But if they use female only spaces, and I note that Glitterknickerbockers didn't refute my second post on that, so I can only presume her friends that are transwomen do use female only spaces, then they are encouraging that atmosphere of these activists who hurl abuse at women who get upset at that. If they don't use these spaces and don't agree with these activists forcing their way in, then that's cool, that's good.

Can you be friends with someone who fundamentally goes against something which is foundational to you? I couldn't be. I'd naturally distance myself to the point where we would end up eventually disengaging altogether.

As always, TRSOH shows its true colours - "Smile, love!" "It's not ladylike to get angry" "Always be sweet and gentle" "BeeeeeeeKinddddd" Hmm

Spot on @Willieverbeok - if you are getting people silenced and fired then you have Privilege. You are not a victim. If you can verbally and physically abuse women on camera with impunity you have privilege granted to no other group in society.

You want to know what an "uncontrollable outburst of rage" looks like? These. These are your mob. According to you though, they are the victims and just want to live in 'peace'. Some peace! And you wonder why we don't want any of these males in our spaces.

Not what you'd describe as delicate little wallflowers are they. The hatred they spew towards women is abhorrent.

WillIEverBeOk · 13/03/2025 07:50

Gripping just fine? It looked like an uncontrollable outburst of rage to me. That's not healthy behaviour.

What do you expect @Glitterknickerbockers ? You post on here telling us off for being mean. You don't show any understanding of the problems women face when their single sex spaces are invaded. Your post was infuriating.

Actually may I suggest that you sit down with your TW friends and give them a lecture on how to respect the rights of women to maintain single sex spaces. They are not women no matter how much they wish to be. They are transwomen who are biologically male.

A very well controlled burst of quite justifiable rage at the ridiculous way women have been expected to hand over all their rights to male hobbyists in the last decade, while young confused women have been lured into catastrophic self-harm.

There really isn't enough rage in the world.

Bloody LARPers.

Yeah, heaven forbid rape survivors like me, and feminists and women and girls get "angry" about being gaslit, DARVOed, and having our rights and safeguards removed. Heaven forbid a woman get angry. Don't we know a woman should know her place, and always speak with a soft voice?
