Reading about the Sandi Peggy case and the various issues that have arisen in Scotland - the rape crisis centre, secret cameras in mixed sex toilets in schools, Isla Bryson, Katies Dolatowski etc - it makes me think, is there just as much issues in Ireland?

i know Barbie Kardashian, the male player on a women’s GAA team. Are there as many issues in Ireland as there is in Scotland, but not really reported on in Ireland?

Yeah. I suspect there is a reason for it, but I agree it'll be something she's made up her own mind about.

Mermoose · 23/05/2025 13:18

I completely agree that she doesn't owe him anything. It's not strange that he'd wonder why they don't interact, given their prominence. It just annoyed me that he suggested she was swayed by others, she's nothing if not independent.

TheKeatingFive · 23/05/2025 12:58

I don't think JKR owes Glinner 'interaction'. They're on the same side of this issue, that's all. He's coming across as a bit entitled when he moans about this.

UtopiaPlanitia · 23/05/2025 12:54

I agree with you about JKR, she’s very much a woman who makes up her own mind. And it’s possible that he’s just not her cup of tea - we don’t all have to like each other 🤷‍♀️

Mermoose · 23/05/2025 11:27

I listened to that yesterday, thought it was an interesting interview. It's unlikely to happen but it would be good to get some of Glinner & O'Doherty's old friends on to hear their side of it or how they justified it. (I don't think I'd agree with them but I'd just find it interesting to see how their minds are working).
One thing that Glinner said - he suggested that JK Rowling doesn't interact with him maybe because other people have briefed against him (I think that was the phrase he used). Rowling doesn't seem to me like someone who is going to take another person's word for it when it comes to character. I think whatever her reason, it'll be her own reason and not someone else's.
The Fr Ted musical sounded like it would have been brilliant.

MarieDeGournay · 14/05/2025 10:18

I'm so impressed with the speed with which the other journalists, some of whom might not be great admirers of Gript - assessed the situation, saw what Coppinger and Paul Murphy, he's being let off the hook- were doing, saw the implications, understood the ethics and within seconds said
'We're done here'

I believe it was Louise Burne of the Irish Mirror who spoke those words - fair play to her!

Edited to add: that kind of speed of response comes from actually believing in something, not just paying lip-service to it. If you hold ideals sincerely, you don't have to think about them, you live them.

I am delighted to see those journalists stand their ground.
The question asked by the Gript journalist was for a comment on government policy.
It was a reasonable question to ask any elected politician.

I think there is a deep irony in seeing how similar Coppinger is to Trump in her behaviour. Trump has behaved exactly the same way in press conferences.

Equally, it is deeply frightening to know that she felt she was entitled to behave this way and I think scenes like that only reinforce the perception that the bailout of RTE has compromised it's integrity.

Seeing the reaction of the 2 journalists who spoke up is the first time in years that I have felt some hope for journalistic integrity.

Following on from this.

Louise Burne really wasn't letting her off the hook.
A few things stood out in what Ruth said.
Ruth's reality :She said she wasn't questioned on the incident by any journalists.
Reality She was pulled on that because Ciara Kelly annihilated her last week on Newstalk.
Strangely, that disappeared from the playback function on Newstalk later the same day.
Perhaps Ruth thought it being removed would be enough to make it seem like it never happened.
The second thing I noticed was that they said they are different to Trump because Trump doesn't allow the AP journalists into the White House, they would never do that just because they disagree with the journalists.
Yet only days ago she was outraged that they had gained access to the Dail

Finally, that apology to Louise and Jack Horgan Jones had to be dragged out of her at the end. Extremely poor behaviour from an elected politician.

Mermoose · 08/05/2025 09:01

Looking at Stella's tweet I saw she also mentioned that Ruth Coppinger and Rosa are having a "march against the manosphere" this evening. Will there be signs at it saying that Sex Work is Work? And will anyone develop hemochromatosis?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 08/05/2025 08:53

Maybe the tide is actually turning... 🙏

NoBinturongsHereMate · 08/05/2025 08:39

Yes, very heartening to see the journalists holding their ground.

TheKeatingFive · 08/05/2025 08:32

Yep that was really good to see

elgreco · 08/05/2025 08:30

Well done them.

Is there a link to the petition anywhere?

They have it linked in response to the first reply. If you read the first response which asks for a link then click "read reply" , the link is in there.
I don't think Mumsnet allows direct links to petitions on this board.
It's on Change.org.

Timely reminder that the LGFA are still failing to protect women.
While the camogie skorts saga is making the headlines and was an unmissable opportunity for Simon Harris to virtue signal, the far more dangerous situation in the LGFA is just not progressive enough to generate the same publicity.

Indeed @Cailleach1 it is surreal how people will wonder aloud how the laundries happened while simultaneously dismantling women's rights under the new dogma. After the UK SC ruling Norma Foley "assured" us that we would not be getting the protection that UK women have.

I don't know if A. Martin uses women's changing rooms. I know he uses women's toilets because he's posted photos of himself doing so. I read Audrey Ludwig's post today on discrimination leading women to self exclude. I haven't used a swimming pool in years because of the GRA but I don't expect Martin or Norma Foley to care much about that.

Cailleach1 · 05/05/2025 14:21

I didn’t know who ‘aoife’ Martin is. I googled and found a biological man. This new enabling of safeguarding breaches is incredible to a generation who saw the seriousness of the recommendations of Fern Report and other inquiries about child sex abuse in Ireland. All the safeguarding measures being thrown aside as lads are given a carte blanche loophole to access places where children (and women) may be in a state of undress etc. Is the Irish state trying to enable the abuse of a new generation of Irish women and children? By creating a situation where a new generation of victims are more easily accessed by men? I am not saying any particular man is a predator. We do not know by merely looking at someone whether they are a predator or not. That is why safeguarding without loopholes is so important.

That ‘Aoife’ Martin fellow likes swimming. I would hope he goes to the men’s changing room. On one of the threads about the Ladies Ponds in London, a poster wrote of a man who intruded on the Women’s pond, sitting on the deck with his penis penis, and one of his testicles hanging out the side of his ‘ladies’ swimsuit. That was in London of course. Maybe in Ireland they’ve not removed safeguarding boundaries to allow Irish men being able to expose themselves, and commit voyeurism in such spaces. In the interests of the women and children present. The recommendations of robust safeguarding on foot of the inquiries into the sex abuses are surely not being discarded so quickly.

I see Norma Foley said she found a report about sex abuse by religious orders to be a harrowing document. I’d hope Norma would find sex offences by all men to be a dreadful thing. It would be hypocritical if Norma (or anyone else in that position) supports (or enables) all men being effectively given carte Blanche to access places where children are in a state of undress and maybe more vulnerable. I’d hope she wouldn’t be such a hypocrite. Or, are we supposed to support the pretence that men aren’t men. If that is the case, it would be no less harrowing than the historical abuses and those colluding to allow it, or cover it with a pretence they aren’t men. I wonder if Norma finds it also harrowing to read that women are being locked up with men in prison. That women are living with threats of rape in that intimidating and abusive situation they have been placed in by the Irish state. Or women attacked by men in refuges.

I hope in 50 years time we don’t have to carry out another inquest about how the Irish state enabled situations where men, who wished to do so, could more easily access children. And women. I wonder which ministers will be named as supporting, or being a driving force of, this safeguarding removal? I hope women are meticulously documenting the words and actions of officials who have removed safeguarding, or support its removal. This will more easily enable any potential new victims to pinpoint (and fully expose) those who were happy to deliberately remove the safeguarding recommendations of the various sex abuses inquiries. Small comfort to the potential future victims, but important to reveal those who deliberately created a more dangerous Ireland for women and children.

Excuse my rambling, but I’m quite cross how these people have so easily betrayed the rights of women and children in the interests of entitled whims of men. All the while saying how they find the past harrowing.

Ireland to set up inquiry into sexual abuse at schools run by religious orders

Inquiry to follow preliminary investigation unearthing 2,400 allegations of historic abuse

Cailleach1 · 05/05/2025 13:20

In this case, I suppose those who don’t profess the new anti scientific, sex changing ideology are the heathens. Well, in that case I’d prefer heathen to pretending to believe in this woman, and gender non conformity, hating shite. One constant characteristic of the new ideology is that it rides a coach and four through Irish women’s rights.

I don't think I can bring myself to read A. Martin's opinion piece although perhaps I should as I only visited Mumsnet because Martin described it as a nest of transphobia or something like that.
It was in an interview I was listening to because I was trying hard to be a good trans ally. Oh well. Thanks Martin!

Ah @Mermoose It sounds like you were corrupted by those heathen British TERF's.
Go back to reading the journal.ie and you have some hope of redemption.
