My sympathies to the victims, the girl who was raped and at least one boy who was sexually assaulted..

Has anyone made a complaint to the BBC about this? I usually eyeroll at their inability to use the correct sex but the crimes here are so awful that the she pronouns have made me particularly angry. The article describes the offence as rape which by definition can only be committed by a man. What has happened is tragic for his family but the onus should be on seeking justice for the young victims and not validating him. Sticking on a pink hairband does not make you female 🙄 It seems to me that the BBC are more concerned with protecting a rapist than the victims’ feelings. Those victims will be in absolute no doubt about who he was.

So sickening to read that BBC article with the "she" pronouns. The poor victim will never get justice now.

The Daily Echo should follow the example of the Scottish Daily Express who have chosen to refer to Dr Upton as a man in the employment tribunal:

I don't know what the consequences have been for the Scottish Daily Express, but it would help if there were a few 'I am Spartacus' moments from other publications challenging the IPSO guidelines.

Time to stop fudging the truth. It’s a man who identifies as a woman. His gender identity doesn’t make him any less of a man, because he was born male and will die male. That’s biology for you.

I believe that using she/her pronouns for this man is grotesquely offensive, not just to his alleged victims, but to anyone who has ever been raped. It twists the knife because it is gaslighting.

A man accused of using HIS penis to commit rape may well identify as a woman and prefer she/her pronouns but that doesn’t mean he has to be referred to in that way.

In court reporting, if you’re a defendant, you get called by your surname. No Mr or Mrs courtesy titles. Why should any man get called wrong-sex pronouns as a courtesy in a case where his sex is a significant factor in his alleged crimes?

For some reason newspapers seem prone to getting tangled in the weeds rather than always applying that basic sanity check.

If such a code exists, it's rarely enforced.

And that’s another problem, because not all forces do record biological sex, so our crime stats are made less reliable. As are court and prison data.

The Mail has its doubts, too. Its earlier headline read "Woman, 25, snared by police while trying to meet boy for sex is jailed".

And the current story, now headlined "Paedophile, 25, who was snared by police while trying to meet up with a young boy for sex is jailed', uses no pronouns at all.

That is despite Avon and Somerset Police using 'she/her' in its media release.
