Pronouns - I’ve peaked 🥺

I was a bloody typical “be nice” feminist.

I went from respecting all pronouns, to not respecting pronouns of people who didn’t respect women (eg Imane Khelif etc etc) and occasionally using they/ them.

Today I was reading a thread on Reddit re Dr Upton and it was such a world away from reading Mumsnet’s posts - where we happily call a spade a spade. Call a man a man.

Reading Reddit, the she / her pronouns just made the whole situation sound much worse for Dr Upton. It automatically appeared Dr Upton was going through more of an ordeal - and that’s not from the content of the posts, which were to be expected, the tone made me feel more sympathetic due to the pronouns used.

It feels much harsher but it’s MUCH clearer what the issues are when pronouns match the facts, not the niceties.

However it’s something I hugely struggle with. Anyone else out there who battle with this ick?

Not as adults afaik. But I wouldn't be surprised if they had kickabouts as kids.

Women do play football in Algeria... some of the cultural evidence held up for IK being male is a bit dodgy TBH. It would be quite normal for someone IK's age not to wear a veil for instance.

Edited

But do the girls/women play with the men though?

If "she" had been raised as a girl, right through to adulthood, her family wouldn't have allowed "her" to be out in the street playing football with boys, which is where "she" was talent-spotted.

@koolkatxx You realise its already been proven that Khelif has internal testes/prostate/micropenis and no uterus ovaries or cervix, right? Its no longer in question that he's male, its already proven by French medical tests he's male. You're behind. https://www.francsjeux.com/en/short/A-medical-report-relaunches-the-Imane-Khelif-case/

"Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, gold medalist at the Paris 2024 Games in the under 66 kilos category, is actually a man. The document details the results of a medical examination conducted in June 2023 at the Kremlin-Bicêtre hospital in Paris, with the support of the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine hospital in Algiers. It states that the boxer, at the center of an interminable controversy during the last Games, has XY chromosomes, typically associated with the male sex, and has internal testicles. The examination also reveals the presence of a micropenis and the absence of a uterus, symptoms of a disorder called 5-alpha reductase deficiency, which alters sexual development."

Pronouns are the grease on the slippery pole of the "getting men into women's spaces" movement.

Best to always use sex based pronouns.

It's strange that publishing became one of the most captured industries of all. Any thoughts on why?

Because it's a rich white posh London-centric monoculture that likes to think of itself as progressive

Yup. Can’t find it now, but there was a photo on Twix a while back of teen Khelif out in a cafe with his male mates. Transitioning may be frowned upon in that society, but realizing your son is male when his micropenis unmistakably grows at twelve, followed by other male, pubertal changes, might well mean being accepted as male, especially if you are from a place where 5-ARD is common.

Why do you think Imane Khelif doesn't respect women? Poor thing, I think nobody has properly considered how it must feel for her and her family coming from the country and society she comes from. She was raised as a girl and as far as they are concerned, she is a woman, so all this outrage must be so painful for her and her family, they will all be mortified.

I've never used the pronouns and it surprises me when GC people do. It's a linguistic trick, and as others have said it can completely change the tone of a sentence.

The women don't want to share their changing room with her. How mean and exclusionary.

The women don't want to share their changing room with him. Of course they don't, he's male and shouldn't be in there.

Same with the "it's an adjective" shtick.

Are MNHQ still doing pronoun deletions? Not had one for ages, on any thread.

There’s not been an announcement of relaxation of rules so it still feels like deletion roulette. I’ve had deletions in the past that have made no sense unless I’d slipped up and used a male pronoun for a male. We don’t get a copy of the offending post or a proper reason, it’s usually ‘not in the spirit’ if you get a reason at all.

I understand we’re ‘allowed’ to use ‘he’ for convicted rapists here.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/02/2025 15:41

Ok. I'm not autistic or male.

Dr Upton says Dr Upton isn't male either. It's not something you can rely on to mean anything any more, thanks to the fringe ideology you appear to support.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/02/2025 15:39

In the article linked, I thought the picture of the cis nurse must be the trans woman

So?

Nice move😬

I think nobody has properly considered how it must feel .......

Being a nice person you decided it would be a great idea to upload pictures of individuals so you can debate if the individual meets your definition of male or female.

But people can now claim that MN is "anti " and "mean" because someone uploades images

Indeed, why oh why can someone not think of the children!

Women respectfully punching someone in the face for fun and/or money is such a popular Western Idea.
Its too outragous to believe the progressive shrinking violets snowdrops of that family would not be mortified.

I work for the NHS, I was role told to put pronouns in my email ( of which I think is a load of bollocks, I am clearly female).

I now have her/majesty on mine..

Ok. I'm not autistic or male.

Perhaps you need new spectacles then?

Of course, real life is very different to a photo - Dr Upton is over a foot taller than Nurse Peggie and has a proportionate head size for a male over 6ft tall, ie wouldn’t be able to wear an off-the peg hat from the women’s section unless it was a very stretchy, knitted style one.

I can tell. So can my female rescue dog.

But I realise some people cannot tell. IME it can often be an autism thing. Or a male thing.

Blokes are far more likely to think a fellow bloke in a frock is a woman than an actual woman is.

In the article linked, I thought the picture of the cis nurse must be the trans woman, before reading the caption -- thus disproving the oft-stated suggestion that we can always tell who is male and who is female. We cannot.

"In the article linked, I thought the picture of the cis nurse must be the trans woman, before reading the caption -- thus disproving the oft-stated suggestion that we can always tell who is male and who is female. We cannot."

Are you saying that you, personally cannot tell, so you think that no one can?

And that the statement that within a population, over time and interaction that some other people are highly likely to (in fact across the population there will be someone who will with a high level of certainty) correctly sex someone, is incorrect?

It is also very usually said that a single photograph might be unreliable to correctly determine a person's correct sex.

Trans doctor used female changing rooms after row

A tribunal hears Dr Beth Upton and nurse Sandie Peggie argued on Christmas Eve 2023, with Ms Peggie calling the doctor a man.
