Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I think males should be banned from female sport and anyone should be allowed to enter the male / open category. The US President has just signed an executive order saying this.

Females need their own sports for reasons of fairness, competitiveness and safety. I am glad that orders like this make it easier to talk about these issues without being called a biggot.

Everyone deserves fair opportunities, women and girls are under represented in sport, this can only help that get a little better.

Transgender sports people also clearly deserve opportunities to participate in sport and so trans women and men should be allowed to enter male / open categories or have their own categories if needed.

Trump to sign executive order barring transgender female athletes from competing

President Donald Trump is signing an executive order designed to prevent people who were biologically assigned male at birth from participating in women’s or girls' sporting events.

The left want to prioritise queer white men by removing women only spaces, medicalising children and having drag queens expose themselves in the white house.

If the left cared about women and children they wouldn't have let that happen.

The only correct misogyny is left wing misogyny?

We're not "falling for it". Most of us know what he is, and why he's doing this.

It doesn't make it wrong, just because it was done by him.

Yes, I doubt there are many posters on here who haven't noticed that men are often selective about the aspects of women's rights they support. It's hardly an impressive insight to point out that Trump is one of them. We'd be waiting a long while for rights if they could only be granted by people who were ideologically perfect, and in a US context clearly neither of the major parties are willing to bat for us on every important issue.

Helleofabore · 06/02/2025 08:16

I doubt you will find many who either believe that he is doing this for any reason other than that he is doing this for votes.

Most people on this thread understand he is abhorrent and this is the umteenth thread on his EOs.

The thing is two things can been true at the same time. He can be an abhorrent individual. He can sign a n executive order that someone on his team put together that is worthy of support.

Like all governments, actions will be taken during the time of serving as a government that reasonable people will be able to support while not supporting a huge slew of other actions. I find it tribal to declare that an action by a government that is worthy of support should be not supported because of who signed it off or who voted for it.

I keep asking the question, are there any successful lobby groups that don’t lobby to the current sitting government to get their objectives achieved if that group opposes the majority of that government’s other policies? Do those belonging to the lobby group get accused of being fools if their years of campaigning have been finally successful because the government that made some of the changes asked for has other abhorrent policies? Do those members of the lobby group get told that they now align with that government based on some of their work being adopted by a government they don’t support on more than one or a few decisions?

It is an entrenched polarised view that a democratically elected government can never produce work that is worthy of support, even if you generally don’t support anything else the government does, surely?

@FindusMakesPancakes only a child hates everything somebody does, even the things they agree with, because they don’t like the person.

Why does it bother you what a trans person is doing? You're not protecting women, you're attacking trans people.

What men do bothers me when it harms women, eg invading spaces where women are meant to be allowed privacy. Men pretending to be women are dangerous to women.

The "open" category is the only one that should exist. Everyone should compete together. Sport is a meritocracy, people should be grouped on ability. There are plenty of female athletes who are better than some men who play the same sport.

The facts disagree with you. Take a look at https://boysvswomen.com/#/

Among other things, it shows the world records of boys in various athletic events versus the world records of women in the same events. In most of them, the women's world record is beaten by 14 or 15 year old boys.

https://boysvswomen.com/#/world-record

And what about athletes with disabilities? Are you going to throw away their categories as well? What about age categories - should anyone, man or woman, be allowed to enter the junior events? And weight categories in boxing, judo etc - do away with those too?

The various categories in sport were created to give people other than young able-bodied males the chance to have meaningful sporting opportunities.

If boys are faster than elite female athletes, should males compete in female athletics?

See how the best high school boys stack up against the best female Olympians and World Record holders in Track & Field and Swimming.

Yeah let's just go back to the days when everything was won by young able bodied males. 🙄

So everyone should continue to allow men to beat up women in contact sports, spike volleyball in their faces, beat them at swimming, walk around naked in the changing rooms, and so on, until someone “nice” comes along and bans it? You’re ok with the harm continuing until then?
No, I don't like or agree with those things.*
*
How long do you want to wait? Who are you waiting for? Because you can be damn sure a Democrat won’t do it.
No, you can't be sure a Democrat won't do it, actually.

This decision is “populist” because the vast majority of the human race recognise a difference between women and men for sport, and think there should be rules in place to maintain that. If others are too stupid to take advantage of a political open goal then that’s on them. But if you want to shame anyone for supporting this EO, explain from your moral high horse why you’re happy to see women and girls continue to be physically and emotionally harmed while you wait for an acceptable saviour to come along.
It's populist because Trump et al. recognised an opportunity to gain a sector of voters and took it. He and his party don't support women - they want women to support them.

I will not apologise for not supporting anything that this moral and ethical vacuum does. Every passing day confirms this position.

Oh, and your heroine Nancy Mace? This was her response to Trump's announcement that he is turning Gaza into the Middle East Riviera: "Let's turn Gaza into Mar-a-Lago."

No, I don't like or agree with those things

So what are you going to do to stop it then? You would prefer it to continue obviously.

No, you can't be sure a Democrat won't do it, actually.

This is laughable. It was during 12 years of Obama and Biden than policies enabling men in women’s sport took hold. Who’s the saviour then?

It's populist because Trump et al. recognised an opportunity to gain a sector of voters and took it. He and his party don't support women - they want women to support them.

So what if it’s “populist”? A popular decision made supported by the majority the population and women and girls are protected. What political mechanism do you propose to correct this problem?

I will not apologise for not supporting anything that this moral and ethical vacuum does. Every passing day confirms this position.

Which is fine, but you have to then admit you’d tolerate women and girls continuing to suffer physical and emotional harm, including sexual assault, because you can’t bring yourself to agree with a few decisions.

Oh, and your heroine Nancy Mace?

I support Mace in having single sex spaces in her workplace. I don’t support her views on Gaza. Why do you find it so hard to comprehend that people can situate themselves like that?

f course men can't be in women's sports.

I do think that in at least some sports, women shouldn't complete with men in an open category either.

Boxing, for example.

Not getting involved in this toxicity one way or another - but this is at least the 3rd AIBU you have started, all on the "trans issue" in less than 24 hours. Avoiding the feminism boards because they are so toxic, so now it's "leaking" into other areas. Do we really need more of this? Nobody is going to change their minds, and between the "trans rants" (on either side), the M&H rants, the benefits / disabled people rants, and the bloody ads / crappy working of the site, it's getting to be a place that is no longer welcoming of anyone at all.

you're on the feminism sex and gender discussions board. The feminism which includes males and thinks men can become women board is over there.➡️➡️

He isn't doing it out of the goodness of his heart. He is doing it for his own populist ends, and you're falling for it.

Why is that a problem - he's enacting EO's his supporters voted for. Isn't that democracy? Would it be better if he enacted legislation that only elites support - like the Democrats when they ushered this mess in?

The left would never, ever have passed this EO. There is no perfect world, no perfect side, and if women on 'the left' cannot look at this EO with clear eyes, they risk losing it all over again the next time Democrats are voted in.

In the US context, the push back that caused this EO to be issued is from the populist right.
This is not to say that the people who often first noticed and fought bravely and valiantly, at considerable personal cost, against the erasure of women, were not women, primarily of the left. They were.

But this would not have happened without the populist right and it's genuinely puzzling to me that you would denigrate them for that.

Can we introduce another acronym along the lines of NAMALT? It’s I’m Not A Fan of Trump But - so INAFOT. It’ll save a lot of time when explaining to people that agreeing with some of the Orange one’s decisions does not mean that you’ve abandoned a lifelong commitment to women’s rights, access to abortion, equal pay etc… Some people just can’t seem to grasp this possibility and it does my fucking head in!

He isn't doing it out of the goodness of his heart. He is doing it for his own populist ends, and you're falling for it.

MarsScarlet · 06/02/2025 00:29

@Arraminta

Yes, exactly. There is a reason why a woman has never passed the selection criteria to join the SAS, Navy Seals etc. It's not discrimination to point out basic biological facts.

Apparently this is not so. It is harder, and the women that have passed are obviously much fewer, but the numbers are not zero.

This is a poor taste joke, unless you're talking about the woman/women who wrote the EOs.
