I do remember once reading a JB piece that made me laugh when I was at my lowest, and it made a difference, and I bet I'm not the only one.

It's depressing that even on here we have people complaining that women aren't 'good human's' when they're not perfect in every aspect of life.

It's also - IMO only of course - generally quite shitty to give your negative opinion on a thread which at the start specifically states it's an appreciation thread and is because Julie is ill.

No-one's stopping you of course - free speech and all that - but some of us might feel free to judge you on your actions too. I don't see the point myself - do you think your single opinion will somehow convince all of us that have appreciated her significant body of work over the years that she's somehow not a good writer who's made us think and laugh?

Well done TERFspice for starting such a great thread and if it really is you Julie (Raven/Burchill/Godess).. thank you so much for your incredible writing which I have loved all my adult life… I know you know it already but it never hurts to hear it from someone else as well .. you are so talented and brave.. quite Burchillian !!

i do have one strong memory from those early days that I've always carried with me, and that is reading the review in the NME of Horses by Patti Smith (don't remember who wrote it, though), and going straight into town and buying that beautiful LP, with the B&W photo (Mapplethorpe) of her on the sleeve, and thinking, what a fucking record this is! Still do.

I've always made a point of reading you Julie, I have disagreed with your views about 50%of the time but yhe writing was always entertaining. Funnily enough it happens much less these days, I'm glad you are reading these comments!

I was only thinking about Julie yesterday when listening to an old desert island discs - I remembered listening to Kirsty interview Julie. Julie was just so refreshingly honest. And I thought Kirsty was a rude twat!

I'd like to add that I WAS a bad mother and very selfish all my life. I DON'T think bad fathers get picked on in the same way - they're often romanticised - but I don't mind being criticised, so I'm not bothered by it and won't be sulking or challenging anyone who thinks that way. Fair enough!

Julie Burchill's columns are the only reason I still subscribe to the Spectator and I wish her well - hopefully she will still be able to write stuff that cracks me up even as my Guardian reader side tries to disapprove.

It's nice of you to come and say hello to us all, @JulieRaven you won't remember me but we met up on a GU talk meet and all went back to yours. You gave me a beautiful bottle of perfume because I liked the smell and gave things to others there as well because you're clearly a very generous person and much kinder than most people would ever guess. I'm sorry you're going through it but your piece was beautiful and summed up a lot of the things I was thinking last year when there were at least two separate occasions that I could/should have died. I annoyed myself some of the time because I was so fucking Pollyanna, but it got me through stuff and I'm pretty sure your way of looking at this totally shite thing that's happened to you will get you through it as well. I have no doubt you'll be less Pollyanna than I was and that's no bad thing. Seriously, way to bore yourself rigid. I hope you can walk again but if not may your wheelchair always be the most comfortable and your painkillers top rate.
