I wish I could say I was surprised by this result but I'm not.
I broadly agree with the Democrats about most things except all the trans nonsense, but I find them completely uninspiring and out of touch.
We've seen the same thing over and over again in the last ten years (since I started to take an interest in politics) and probably a lot longer. We saw it with Scottish independence, Brexit, Trump 2016 and now Trump again. The more "establishment" side have absolutely nothing to offer other than scare tactics about what will happen if people vote for the maverick. People want to vote for something, not against something.
I posted in this forum a while back about having been kicked out of a US based parenting group for politely disagreeing that JK Rowling is a Nazi. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that group today. With them, I thought a huge part of the problem is that they just cancel anyone who disagrees with them about anything. If you refuse to engage with anyone who doesn't already agree with you about anything you are never going to get anywhere. You'll never win anyone over to your point of view or achieve any kind of meaningful change.
A lot of people will say it's because America is fundamentally sexist and racist and a black woman was never going to beat a white man to the White House. Whilst I think there is probably some truth in that, Obama won two terms and Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, so it clearly isn't beyond the realms of possibility for a woman or a person of colour to be POTUS. The problem here is that Biden has been one foot in the grave for most of his term and Kamala has been nowhere to be seen. I don't think I saw her in the news once between Biden's election four years ago when she was his running mate and a few months ago when he finally accepted that he couldn't run for a second term.
