@ArabellaScott

Sorry if i missed it but was that a translation from Spanish or written by Gascon directly in English?

Not that it matters, I imagine it's the same word spaghetti in any language.

I assume English, although I'm not sure if the article said tbh.

It's looking like my cunning plan to clean up at the bookies on this is starting to look like a non-runner. Thanks, in part, to you harpies! 😛With all the recent publicity, I don't think even the Academy would push the boat out that far.

RedToothBrush · 01/02/2025 09:14

I can't decide if this is hilarious or horrendously appalling.

Wouldn't it be funny for a transwoman to get cancelled by the Oscars for bigotry? There'll be people having a right meltdown over (checks notes) freedom of speech, won't there?

Side note: it's funny, I saw a trailer for the film the other day. It mentioned some of the nominations. I noted to DH the one nomination it DIDN'T mention in the trailer.

It was most curious.

It was almost as if the advertising agency didn't want to promote the best actresses nominations because it might not go down well with potential audiences.

Well I guess there's more than one reason they'd want to play down that nomination.

Well, at least half of FWR still has the screenshots of that Gargoyles tweet.

I'd clean forgotten about the gargoyles!

teawamutu · 31/01/2025 22:37

To paraphrase Marina Hyde (on Neil Gaiman): I've managed to speak up for persecuted minorities and use social media for twenty years without going into foul Islamophobic rants or speaking approvingly of Hitler. I recommend it.

Gary watched it so we don't have to.

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2025 20:12

Hm. Not sure if I can post that without MN buggering the formatting.

Trying again. If not, copy paste the last bit of the address, that should work.

(The quote at the end is from a Japanese Buddhist sect, Nichiren, probably Soka Gakkai.)

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2025 19:52

Argh, sorry, I keep thinking it's done and then scrolling down and there's more:

'It is clear that there is something very dark behind it.
But I tell you something: “The more you try to sink me, the stronger it will make me. The greater the victory will be.”
Please forgive me once again if any of my words hurt you.
Sincerely, Karla.
NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO'

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2025 19:51

Oh my god, even more:

'I have defended each and every one of the minorities in this world and supported freedom of religion and any action against racism and homophobia in the same way that I have criticized the hypocrisy that underlies them, because the first thing I am critical of is myself.
You will never hear me support a war, an injustice, extremism or applaud anyone who oppresses other human beings.
Perhaps my words are not correct, many times due to ignorance or pure mistake. I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future.
I am a human being who also made, makes and will make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect. Taking my words out of context or manipulating them to hurt me is something I am not responsible for.
I am only responsible for what I say, not for what others say I say or what others interpret from what I say.
I hope to have the opportunity to give a more extensive explanation at some point.
Forgive me because I keep going from one side to the other and I cannot be responding to every single thing you bring up to try to sink me.
But if you want, you can continue attacking me as if I were responsible for hunger and wars in the world. I apologize again if I have ever offended anyone with my words in my life.
I am only Karla Sofía Gascón, an actress who has reached where very few have thanks to her effort and work, without stealing or harming anyone in this world, just trying to get them to let me live in peace, love and respect, something that seems to bother a lot of people in this world.'

“I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X,” writes the Emilia Pérez star. “I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything.”

Edit - sorry, there's more!

'I had long ago made the decision to close a social network [sic], which has taken a terrible turn, in which I have also sometimes fallen, and for which I apologize.
As part of this society, I have expressed my disagreement or agreement with all the related issues that have touched me and of which I have had an opinion, often erroneous, which has changed throughout my own experience. I have always used my social media as a diary, reflections or notes, to later create stories or characters, not as something that would be scrutinized down to the last of its 140 characters, since sometimes I, myself, am not even aware of having written something negative.'

Gina Carano was sacked from The Mandalorian for social media posts.

Just saying.

PriOn1 · 31/01/2025 19:00

“the original script that had Manitas only wanting to become a woman to evade justice.”

Well now. A really good film might have examined the ethics of changing sex for advantages that brings… but that would be transphobic of course. A much more interesting topic though.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 31/01/2025 18:45

I mean they’re not even faintly unequivocal are they 🤪🤪🤪

Hitler was just having an opinion about Jews…..I mean fucking hell!!

Binglebong · 31/01/2025 18:42

Láurel Miranda, a transgender human rights advocate said she had received a casting call for the film looking for “a middle-aged transgender actress with a robust build, because of course we trans women always have to be hardy,” she said sarcastically.

In addition infusing the movie with “soap opera stereotypes” of what transgender women should look like, Miranda questioned the original script that had Manitas only wanting to become a woman to evade justice. Gascón pushed to change the motivation to a woman looking to make her transition.

My bold.

This would have changed things a bit! But no doubt becoming a woman, whatever the reason, would have caused a personality change and they would suddenly become a peaceful and docile member of fairer sex.

TheKeatingFive · 31/01/2025 18:05

Well this is wonderful 😂

Wemaybebetterstrangers · 31/01/2025 18:01

Well well well. The most interesting aspect here is what will the lovely Oscar people do with this information.. their heads will be hurting with internal conflict.

Clearly they Should withdraw the nomination. But but but ..

As if William Smith thumping Christopher Rock in the face wasn’t enough, now This.

It’s almost as if the Oscar’s are past their sell by date.

Well to be fair.. it does somewhat recall the feminist argument that there won't be true equality until there's just as many mediocre women getting promoted as mediocre men 🤣
