Emma Corrin and 'homophobia'

Emma Corrin claims to have experienced homophobia since 'coming out' as non-binary.

Emma Corrin is in a relationship with Rami Malek.

Make it make sense.

Maybe, Errol, pp means 'expecting a woman to have a female physique and facial features = buying onto gender norms'
Idk. This insanity has gone beyond me.

There are indications that this stretches back to the 1970s and probably prior to that. This is from another thread and these 'gatekeeping' discussions always remind me of the final sentence here.

This too, from the Gay Liberation Front journal - Come Together - issue 11: Lesbians Come Together. It's from a piece by the GLF Transvestite, Transsexual and Drag Queen group, originally published in 1972:
A more central question is how to relate to other women. When we talk about our hopes and fantasies, it becomes apparent that what we want above all is to be accepted as women, primarily by other women. But will we achieve this by looking for ways in which we share experience with regular women or by developing a unique transvestite consciousness?
Sometimes the second approach seems real militant and proud, at other times it seems a cop-out, accepting the prejudiced view that we're not women, that we're some freaky third sex (or fourth or fifth?). Possibly we can find some light by considering the situation of black women and gay women, who develop black pride and gay pride, but still explore their feelings as women. Think how much more inspiring and beautiful the women's revolution will be when it joyously includes all women. Think of a Holloway demo with transvestite, transsexual and drag-queen women, gay women and heterosexual women, black, yellow, brown and white women, working women, housewives and career women. Certainly, whatever course we take as transvestites, transsexuals and drag queens, we must first destroy the trap wherein regular women set up standards by which they accept or reject us . (my bold)

The Trans Umbrella Is Older Than You Think | Mumsnet

If someone at a football match started yelling out that xyz player was a queer, took it up the arse, whatever these rude football chants might say...then they would be accused of homophobia, even if they player wasn't out as gay/wasn't even into men. So I think calling someone gay slurs/insults is homophobic regardless of the sexuality of the victim.
If the person is using it to insult someone. It's basically saying that by using 'gay' as an insult you are inherently homophobic.

I still think she's an attention seeking irritant though.

It became clear during the boxing brouhaha that some people think that expecting a woman to have XX karyotype and no testes is buying into gender norms. Seriously. Mad times.

I don't think you can be clearly, perceptibly and blatantly female without buying into traditional stereotypes about what being female is.

Seriously? Confused
(And that sentence seems to me to come from a 'second sex', mindset. 'Blatantly female' ffs. )

Someone who it clearly, perceptibly and blatantly female, who doesn't buy into traditional stereotypes about what being female is, is a woman.
This is a description of most of the women posting here.

I believe that the PP you responded to may believe, either that it is possible for a human to disguise their sex completely, or, that traditional stereotypes about what being female is include things like ovaries and X chromosomes, or both. There's some terrifyingly weird 'thinking' going on out there.

Oh yes, I agree that it's not homophobia because I never said they were in a homosexual relationship. It would be queerphobia.

I have short hair, am I a bloke now, according to the gender borg "right side of history" types? Good oh. I must tell my husband.

franceslucia · 23/09/2024 00:42

I think it's fair to assume that they would be faced with 'queerphobic' abuse then.

Can you help me out with your definition of queerphobic please?
Heterosexual couple so nowt to do with same sex attraction?

franceslucia · 23/09/2024 00:15

I believe them. Emma Corrin is potentially 'a man', Rami Malek is 'a man'. It's very easy to see where homophobic abuse can occur.

Emma Corrin, who played the young Princess Diana on The Crown, doesn’t look anything like a man.

Surely you aren’t so daft as to think short hair = a bloke? Grin

How on earth can anyone say Corrin is potentially a man? Corrin is a female who identifies as nonbinary gender. Not a man biologically nor by identity.

Emma Corrin isn't remotely butch Grin

Can somebody explain to me when gamine and butch became the same word?

EC is gamine. She is about as butch as Little Bo Peep.

Thank you! I was trying to remember the word I'd use to describe EC's presentation and it is 'gamine'. She's more Bambi than butch.

I guess that's my point. If the reason for the piss taking isn't related to the daftness of sexism it's maybe a bit off topic for a feminism board. Fully on board with taking the piss out of silly fashion on S&B or AIBU, just sits a bit weirdly amongst the usually very thougtful feminist critques and indeed the usually very thoughtful feminist piss taking!

After all, it's not like gender roles and the people who venerate them don't provide more than enough material for the taking of the piss!

Edited

I think you'd struggle to find a Mumsnet thread with over 50 comments which HASN'T gone off-topic, to be honest!

😥it does - and it screws up young women's world view so much that even the things they think are escaping/defying it are often just breaking through into another layer of the trap.

Yep. Here's your liberation, girls. Enjoy the freedom to sacrifice your body and wellbeing to the male gaze.

And I say this as someone who was thoroughly suckered in by much of it as a younger woman, btw, I'm not criticising anyone.

Watched some of the fashion show. The clothes are okay, but what strikes me is how some frighteningly underweight several models are. The world just chews women up and spits them out, doesn't it.

Famous NB 'lesbian' trailblazing model Twiggy in the 60s

Every generation thinks they invented everything, although now we have added "we interests and now everyone oppressed us". I can't remember if it was EC or another actress who claimed she couldn't get work because she was a woman with short hair (short, not shaved) seemingly unaware that Judi Dench has had some variation of a pixie cut for most of her career.

I think it's fair enough to take the piss out of someone literally dressed as a goldfish in a bag. And who regularly forgoes trousers.

The piss-taking is totally unrelated to the sex of the person concerned.

I guess that's my point. If the reason for the piss taking isn't related to the daftness of sexism it's maybe a bit off topic for a feminism board. Some of the more er... vehement critique of that outfit follows a poster upthread writing
'I mean in her photos she presents in a way most people would associate with men and butch lesbians' [ it says 'her photos' in general, in fairness]
and if there's one thing you can say about the outfit in question, it's that it doesn't scream 'butch lesbian'😏

I was thinking more of this sort of look tbh

She does seem to switch it up though.

People are reading way too much into what I said, I'll try again though. I'm not surprised a homophobe would think she was a lesbian and respond homophobically if they saw her dressed in this kind of style.

Maybe I have too much of a jaundiced view of society and lesbophobia is a thing of the past.

Is this true?
If so it speaks to the complete and total erasure of butch women in our culture.

Editing to add: My original post is a bit snipy but in the time since posting it (thankfully within the editing window) it's occurred to me that this might be the source of your consternation, @AdamRyan.
You look at Corrin and see a butch lesbian (and therefore someone who would be a target for homophobes).
To me she looks more like a pretty twelve year old girl. It would never in a million years have occurred to me that someone (including someone homophobic) could look at her and think "butch lesbian."

Edited

Sort of yes. I wouldn't say she's butch, but she often chooses to present in a way that might make some homophobes assume she's a lesbian. Mens suits, buzz cuts etc. That's why I would not be surprised if she's had some homophobic abuse.

ArabellaScott · 26/05/2024 18:23

And I admire your intent to dress like a lunatic, Mme Cholet. I achieve this by accident not design.
