Tales from the Green Valley was the first thing I saw RG in, @LittleBitofBread - I caught an episode of it the other day on Together TV (I think), but this is the link to the series on YouTube.

It fascinated me because I live in a house of very similar date and construction, and it gives me a bit of a chill to think of the former inhabitants dressed in the same sort of clothes, doing the same sort of things as they went about their daily lives 400 years ago.

I’ve actually worked with one of the academics mentioned on this thread and their position on trans “rights” doesn’t surprise me at all. It’s extremely unlikely that they believe that a woman can have a penis, but they are ruthlessly ambitious and individualistic and wouldn’t think twice about trampling on anyone who got in their way, in their pursuit of career advancement. Of course, they are all #bekind on social media.

Yes, RG wears the clothes so she can feel how it was to do the work in them. I'm sure I remember one programme where she was giving the corset some side-eye at the beginning but later on said it was actually supportive when doing heavy work, and likened it to a weight-lifter's belt. I think she's ace.

Ruth Goodman is no stranger to a corset but my God, the woman commits to whatever time-period she’s inhabiting. I was watching her only the other day ripping the guts out of poultry and mattocking roots from hopelessly weed-choked ground (NB not at the same time), while dressed in full 17th c yeoman farmer’s wife gear. IMHO she does actually put in the hard yards as opposed to chucking on a farthingale and simpering.

She's not actually an archaeologist at all ... Boils my piss a tiny bit when people constantly call her one. She's an anatomist/pathologist, a medical doctor, a presenter of human science to the public, and her PhD is indeed on palaeopathology (eg pathology of ancient or at least old people) - lots of experts from other fields work and lecture in archaeology departments.

I do still like her, despite everything. Wish she'd stop Being Kind though. I always wonder if she does an inner cringe when she pulls lines like the Clownfish one, or if she genuinely is a true believer? (Ironic, given her past role as British Humanists president!)

I used to subscribe to the UK Humanists but some of them are as extreme as Fundamentalist Theists. I can’t be Good Without God when some humanists have these views. Now I’m just a plain old Atheist who eye rolls religion. Some bonkers Humanists want to ban religion altogether. Some humanists have turned The Flying Spaghetti Monster into an actual deity. Some humanists, like Alice, are in the TWAW camp, completely ignoring the humanist idea that science can explain the universe. Alice can’t be a scientist and ignore her scientific training, but she pretends that she can to “be kind”. You can’t be both, Alice!

She's a grifting idiot. I hate to say this about another woman because I've been on the wrong end of the 'you only got that promotion because the boss fancies you' shit, and it still angers and upsets me 20 years later, ...but if she's going to drivel on about clownfish, I'm afraid I really have to wonder if it was genuinely her academic merit that got her onto TV or the fact that she was young and pretty. Because her brain is clearly not her best feature.

Women can be reduced into nothing by their biology. See also: death in childbirth, also greater risk to women of head trauma and whiplash. Denying this fact only increases the risk of it happening. Roberts is a forgettable grifter. Deep down, she knows this.

@LittleBitofBread I'm also dreading the answer re. Lucy Worsley - I appreciate her gleefulness immensely - but having said that, she doesn't strike me as particularly brave.
