I went to one of her shows at the time, too. It was feckin’ fantastic, just as good as in the Moloko-era. I was so glad to see the reception she got, from a substantial crowd.

What is ridiculous is the “moral high ground” some posters take over listening to her music.

ffs!

Well, the Spanish Inquisition also took the moral high ground....

Bedheadbeachbum · 09/09/2025 21:39

I honestly can't believe just how captured the music industry is when it's an industry historically brimming full of gender non conforming people like no other - from David Bowie and glam rock to punk to the New Romantics etc etc etc.

The biggest sign to me that gender dysphoria is something many of us go through and come out the other end is that NONE of those very famous non conforming artists have come out as non-binary in their mature years.

Hats off to Roisin Murphy.

What makes it more annoying is the G act as if they have the bloody moral high ground! And this is how they treat people like Roisin?

ETA: grammar

INeedAPensieve · 09/09/2025 10:11

I'd already stopped being a guardian reader after the way they'd treated Suzanne Moore and then when I discovered the real reason Hadley Freeman left (who was one of my favourite guardian writers). I think I'm still registered with them but I've not commented since and I stopped my subscription when Hadley left and I found out why. I believe the rot started to set in back in 2015 when they turned their back on the real stories about the sexual assaults and rapes in Cologne.

So so disappointed in them. My DH still subscribes and reads it. Drives me nuts and I have to stop myself reacting negatively when he reads it to me or tries to get me to come back. Nope. Not until they apologise to all the women they've wronged. Starting with Roisin.

duc748 · 09/09/2025 10:02

Belting record. I bought it at the time, like a lot of posters here I imagine. The G review was cowardly and shameful. These are the people who tell the world they are the good guys?

ArabeIIaScott · 09/09/2025 09:47

'My album Hit Parade came out 2 years ago today, in the middle of a controversy. Having been told previously by music journalists that it was already “album of the year” when the controversy broke I was instructed by the same people to admit “ignorance” and apologise or face a drop in scores. These messages were passed on to me by my then record label, Ninja Tune. I have the receipts. This is not journalism or criticism, it’s authoritarianism. The record did indeed suffer revised scores across the board and was left off the end of year lists. It wasn’t just upsetting for me but also very frightening to see how the whole of the music media, in tandem, were able and willing to punish a work of art for the sake of activism. To say I’ll never be the same again is an understatement. Props to The Guardian for not changing the 5 star score. But the piece itself is rotten to the core. And the record was never again mentioned by them, I really hope one day that changes.'

I agree, it’s very sad that she was treated this way. That Guardian piece is fucking disgraceful.

sandgreen · 09/09/2025 09:07

The more I re-read that statement, the sadder it makes me. She isn’t a ‘political’ artist, nor does she tell people what to think. She expressed a personal opinion, once, and that was all it took. She has a way with words here, capturing the magnitude of it all in a very understated way, but easy enough to grasp the real horror of it.

In her replies she tells someone she’s writing a book, but that might just be a turn of phrase. But the personal abuse she’s got under that post - still - is disgusting, and certainly not very intelligent.

There is a good thread from Mr Menno about this too: MrMenno 🏳️‍🌈🎶 on X: "1 / It's heartbreaking to read what an impact this has had on Róisín. She said nothing wrong. Multiple systemic evidence reviews have since vindicated her and at least 12 countries have changed course on 'puberty blockers' All this was started by Andrew Davies aka @joannacuddle" / X

NettleandBramble · 09/09/2025 07:39

I went to one of her gigs as a result of the kerfuffle. I go to a lot of gigs and would rank that among the most enjoyable. The audience was lovely and friendly too.

Ooh I missed that @lcakethereforeIam, thank you!

Car danced all the way to work as, finally, I've heard a song from that latest album on 6 music. Nick Grimshaw said he had coo cool on repeat in 2023.

They've played the odd older song but not from that album since the 'hoo har.'

oh I clearly had heard one from it! But over a year later and only once

and she clearly wasn’t given the expected level of reception

Thank you for reviving the thread.

it’s gutting to read how badly she was censored and cancelled for saying what Wes steering has made law. Shame on bbc who stopped playing her album. I heard it first on 6 music but then it was dropped.

I’ve heard her other work being played but never that album.

I know a music producer who said it is considered her best work. We both went to her tour and I 100% agree.

*speaking as a long time fan from the 90s

I am in awe of how measured she is in the face of the most horrific bullying. 'Props to The Guardian'... their (many times revised) review is one of many articles they have published during this dark period that stands as testament to how they abandoned and silenced women. I hope, some day, they remove all but the five stars.

Sheas tú an fód go daingean, a Róisín, maith thú!
You stood your ground, Róisín, well done!

Reviving this thread just to share a timely update from Roisin - unbelievable this was two years ago.

(tried this earlier and my phone went funny so hope it works this time)

I was just wondering who the local MP is. Turns out it's Abtisam Mohamed (Labour), all I know about her is that she saw off Eddie Izzard as a candidate, so perhaps she isn't all bad!

Biffology · 07/10/2024 21:59

@ArabeIIaScott

It's mainly men who are causing these problems.

On the other hand, Winston's saying that a woman has been the originator of this situation.

So there may be a discussion that men need to have with other men but also an issue with women, ultimately making problems for other women.

That might be a key element in the ideas I'm searching for, where women parcel off what might turn out to be the main part of the issue to men - the bit that men are, in fact, the perpetrators of - but can then focus in on this other thing - what one might term 'luxury beliefs'.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/10/2024 21:53

Brilliant statement from Winston. Thank you!

ArabeIIaScott · 07/10/2024 21:45

As a mother and a feminist, I am So. Damn. Tired. I have no more energy to keep talking about how men harm women, how women need single sex space for privacy, dignity and safety. We've been talking for years, and been called 'terfs' and 'bigots', and worse. We just want women's rights to be protected.

We need more men to step up and speak out.

An incredibly powerful statement:

Update on my non-attendance at Hagglers Corner on Saturday 28th Sept.
I was informed via a third party I was not welcome on the premises due to their 'safe space' policy, which I have requested but not yet recieved.

Apologies to those who turned up believing myself to be playing.
Hagglers chose to not inform the public prior to the event. For reasons best known to themselves.
Apparently, a young woman, stranger to me, has been attempting to smear my name and reputation in Sheffield.

Haggler's seem to have based their actions upon the word of this individual, or individuals aligned with them.

I have no interest in giving this behaviour much time. I’m too old, ugly and black and have dealt with much nastier behaviour over the years.

Haggler’s have made no attempt to engage with me in any professional manner prior to cancelling me the day before the event, despite me having supported and played their venue multiple times.

To date, I have not received a single call.

The issue for them seems to be that on 21st September, I attended a ‘Let Women Speak’ event. This was hosted by a registered political party
The Party of Women who have a candidate in Sheffield as well as Nationally.

This gathering of mainly Mothers and Grandmothers was initially well attended, but following the assault of 2 women, it thinned out, as some women understandably, feared for their safety, from Men.
This took place with Police presence in Barkers Pool. Court case pending.

The Women gathered stand for Women’s sex-based rights, whether in public spaces, the workplace, toilets, the NHS, sports, jobs opportunities, scholarships, rape crisis centres etc. A worthy and righteous cause in my opinion.
The rights which were fought for by generations of Women are under attack, sadly not just by men, but other women.

A crowd turned up to protest and abuse the gathering at Let Women Speak consisting of ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Free Palestine’ antifa types, using these bolt on causes to try and legitimise their nonsense (who are the fascists?) and proceeded to scream, shout, jeer at and yes assault 2 Women.

I also had verbal abuse hurled at me and told I was on the wrong side, I expect because I am black, as apparently, we need to be told by the anti-racists how to behave and what /who to support. Make of that what you will.

The event had been labelled by the screaming mob, an Anti-Trans event and the attendees as Nazi’s, fascists etc. In reality it was mostly Women, many of whom have been involved in social justice movements, and caring for others most of their lives.
But It seems all that is needed to get people to abuse, shout over and defend the assault of two of them, is to call them predictable and abusive terms, which unbelievably, others take as gospel without digging any deeper.

For those in that crowd, you did succeed in scaring some Women, and those speaking about their abuse, safety of Women in the NHS etc could barely be heard. So, you did succeed in silencing Women. Do you wear that badge with honour? Sadly, I suspect you do.

Some Women didn’t attend due to fears it would affect their employment. They were right, as that is what this crowd do. They attack, shout, attempt to impact employment and reputation – doesn’t sound so righteous to me, but that is who they are.
Of course, I became that person for some unknown ill-informed group – an easy target for them.

Haggler’s based my cancellation on the word of such people.

You see, they have a ‘Safe Space Policy’ which apparently my presence would violate.
A ’Safe Space’ for whom is the question?
For me, a long timer of the independent club and music scene, probably older than most attempting to attack my reputation, there is only a need for a safe space for Women in a venue.
Women need a place of refuge to escape, creeps, drunks, and yes possible predators in a club or bar. We all knew this once, but apparently that space isn’t inclusive and now has to allow men to have access.

Young Women will be most impacted by such policies, as they have yet to find their voices, so it is for Men such as me and Women such as those at ‘Let Women Speak’ to fight for their safety in the absence of reality in some quarters.

Hold the line!

I do not fear cancellation, as it is the default for the weak minded. I do fear however for the safety of Women and girls. So, I will not bow down to the baying mob, who no doubt would have thrown stones at suffragettes, and cheered on the burning of women accused of witchcraft.

I stand with Women, straight, gay or Bi and their right to Women only spaces and events and will continue to do so.

And for those who, despite knowing me, my history and reputation did not see fit to do me the courtesy of calling me directly to discuss the event. We can consider any relationship we had terminated.

If I were to go along with this, just to get along, like so many do, I would be failing in my duty to my Mother, My Wife, Daughter, My sisters, nieces, aunties and the oppressed women of the world.

So do your worst, I will do my best.

Any men fighting for their right to be in Women only spaces, are the very men that must be kept out of those spaces.

Unapologetically,
Winston Hazel.

That really was ‘unapologetic’! Thank you for sharing.

And thank you Winston!

I'm going to throw the partridge amongst the pigeons and see what you think of this.

Let's say you (yes I have a dangler so it's over to you ladies) add onto his comments and say 'As a mother/grandmother who Winston has referred to here, I/we...'

What would you want to say ?
