If you click the lightbulb it takes you to clues and comments. There is always a cryptic illustration which is usually a clever play on some of the words, but today it doesn't seem to fit any. Then there are comments at the bottom (a forum like here!)

purple and greens were difficult and very American. Purple I had an idea but greens no clue . I don’t think you needed to be American to get blue - in a loose context anyway.

Unless you’re American, I think green and blue will be very tricky. Not even hints helped me today.

My USA undergrad year helped for this one. I was in the right ballpark for purple, not quite the right connection.

@WinterFrogs - I often do that too if I’m stuck. Even with using hints I sometimes still fail. I do look at the NYT hints but only the first bit. I don’t look at the chat bit in case of spoilers.

I only knew three of the greens and my first guess of the fourth was a bit silly. I thought blue was something else. Purple took a while to fathom even when I knew what it was.

That's interesting. Have never noticed that🤭 I use nyt connections word tips which gives a hint, then the group name, then option to see the words. Hidden till you click on them.
I find it more rewarding to try to work it out from hints if i get stuck. Random stabbing gets me nowhere so my excuse is I get to use my brain and learn new things 😇
