It's the classic "DD15 threw an out of control party while I was on holiday" thread. AIBU to be this upset/angry?

Longtime lurker, first time poster... I've just returned from a lovely week abroad with the boyfriend, while the DCs were staying at their Dad's, or so I thought...
Calls and texts from the police told me otherwise. DD15 told her dad she was on a sleepover elsewhere and threw a "gathering" at my house. Word got out, randoms turned up, stealing precious items and trashing the house and garden. Fortunately a neighbour called the police, who ended the party. DD15 was very drunk, the police and called and texted me (I didn't see this until the morning) and eventually turned up on her dad's doorstep.

It's the classic tale... but I didn't expect this for another few years - DD only just turned 15 last month. She has cleaned up a bit and I paid for a cleaner to come while away, but there is still a lot of damage: broken furniture, lots of broken glass inside and out, indoor plants emptied outside, smashed pictures, stolen jewellery and DS's prized sports medal collection. The house was egged inside and out, lots of unreachable egg on the second floor windows. They found my fire extinguisher and set it off inside the house. It still smells a week on of damp. Packets of lentils emptied throughout, including in the above ground pool.
I feel that I have been drip fed information about this and that it is so much worse than described, I feel violated, angry and deeply upset.

For a little context, I've had a bad month in which our beloved (and very old) family dog died, my car died and I lost my freelance contract, so suddenly find myself without any work, money and no money coming at the month end as I would have to go to court to get it - and it's not worth the stress with this particular client. So I would love some advice as to what to do and also whether IABU to be so devastated by this and so angry.

DD needs consequences. Her dad has already let go of the grounding we agreed to and she was out with her friends already one night this week. So I don't think we will be on the same page.

I'm also just so broken at the moment from the other things that have been going on, that further conflict feels like something I will not welcome!

Would would you do in this situation?

Some were placed on my doorstep anonymously . Others have been seen by various school friends in one boy's bedroom but he denies having them. He could be the person who handed them back.

That is so rubbish… it honestly beggars belief someone would keep them!! You must want to just go round there and take them back

I do understand. I was robbed by someone who had a key to my flat (ex tennant who had made a copy before I lived there) and I was also extremely frustrated with the police (said there was nothing they could do) and insurance (no forced entry - nothing they could do) and it’s so bloody frustrating that someone has stolen from you and no one will do anything about it! It is a good lesson to your daughter that there are evil people out there waiting for an opportunity.

(also a tip to anyone reading that if you rent a flat - have the locks changed before you move in)

That is rubbish too!

Definitely a good tip...

Did your son's medals turn up? I think maybe you had a lead on those? Hoping something at least has worked out for you

Understood. I am not angry. It is frustrating being held up by police being slow.
I'm a bit floored/destroyed rather than cross. Just trying to claw my way back up to the surface!

I’m sorry I don’t have anything helpful to add but just wanted to send you unMumsnetty hugs! What an awful lot to deal with initially and then being burgled on top. I hope the police and insurers get on board quickly. I am sure you’re devastated.

Thank you- hug accepted!!

whilst the police may have not done things properly- it is important to remember that you would not be in this position if it hadn’t been for your daughters deliberate and calculated deception. It wouldn’t be fair to transfer your anger to the police.

i really hope your sons medals were found - just can’t believe someone would take them!

That’s so annoying of the police. I’m also just really glad no one was hurt.

You might have to wait until your daughter is a mother herself and has a home she has worked for, and precious items which can't be replaced for a full mortified and contrite understanding and apology..The 'party' was one thing, but the awful trashing/thieving went beyond that. Has she seen how heartbroken (as well as angry) you are? Teenagers are so ( well in my experience) so challenging to parent, I have been reading through my own teenage diaries recently, what a self centred, self justifying and careless little madam I was! . Her father's reaction is very disappointing, as a poster up thread said how would he have liked it. Sending you a virtual hug for everything, especially losing your dog. I hope life /work starts to get on track for you again. Teenage parties can often be laughed about after a few years have passed, but this was a violation of your private home and one day your daughter will realise this.

I think this is one of those things that the kids will only really understand when they are adults/parents/go through similar!

It’s all upsetting but I would try and comfort myself with seeing “the bigger picture” no one was hurt. Listened to the latest davina interview with the mint velvet founder who lost her son in a stupid road accident for perspective.

Its also disconcerting to realise there basically isn’t a police force any more for things like this.

I have it on my list to listen to - thanks.
And you are right, of course.

Sounds like it's time to put in a complaint with the police, did they really send only a single police officer? They must have a sergeant you can speak to?

They sent two but would only tell me the name of one.
They both actually turned up at my house on Sunday, unannounced - while I was out. My youngest was there.
I called them and they deny leaving a window open. Of course.

I would save your energy. There aren’t really police anymore as we have found 😳.

AnotherEmma · 20/09/2026 13:23

Sorry the police have been so unhelpful.
Definitely time to make a formal complaint.

Ultimately, the consequences are that she's lost your trust. That means less freedoms, as she can not be trusted. She's going to have to work hard to gain back any trust.

My 15 year old also lied and said he was going to a sleepover. He went on a coach hours away to meet up with someone else. He got himself into big trouble, but it really hurt me that he lied to my face so much. That summer, I didn't let him out of my sight, or he stayed with other trusted adults in the family. That was when we put life360 on the phone.

For your daughter, this is going to mean closer supervision as she can't be trusted.

TheMadGardener · 20/09/2026 01:34

That's really poor response from the police.

IllBiteYourLegsOff · 19/09/2026 21:23

Sorry for the slow update, I've been a bit snowed under with trying to find work, phoning the police & insurance almost daily.
The police still won't give a second crime reference number and insist that I speak only with the officer who attended the first night. She has been off duty/off sick/too busy to speak to me for 3 weeks. She texts me every now and then, apologising and saying she eill call the following day. An invariably does not.
I have reported the second night burglary online but heard nothing. Current total stolen stands at £24k.
I'm ploughing ahead with the insurance claim, stating that it is a separate incident and caused by police negligence.
I am also tempted to complain about the police, at this stage.
My daughter really does feel horrific about this and is trying to make amends, still.
I'm very grateful that nothing bad happened to her and her friends during the party.

I will push the insurers definitely.
There is now the theft & criminal damage; followed by re-entry burglary when police say they left the house secure and then burglary the following night.

Had it not been for this thread, I would not have known to do this.

Any update @IllBiteYourLegsOff ?

Have the insurance changed their mind after the police report saying they locked up

Any further news on this ?

QueenietheGreat · 12/09/2026 18:33

@BeUmberMember
Glad she never came to any physical harm
But, being the sort of person i am
My kids know I can carry a grudge forever and a day
I know talk about 'letting go'
But with me it's more
'I'll remember this time and not give you the chance ever again whilst still functioning the best I possibly can'
Not right for most
But works for me
