‘If trans women use men’s toilets, they will be subjected to humiliation, abuse and violence.

Anyone with any sense knows this.

Which is why in practice trans women will not use men’s toilets, and will just increasingly be driven out of society.’

let’s just drive women out of society then eh? Because the same stands for women having to share with men in dresses ffs

have I missed something btw? Seems a random
post for a Sunday morning

That must be a rarity in Rome ( where was it out of interest?). I know Rome fairly well ( as a tourist) and can't say I've ever encountered mix sex blocks of toilets, although many small establishments tend to have a couple of single ocupancy rooms for use by any patron.

I honestly can't remember. I can remember one lady running out because she thought she was in the gents.

Shortshriftandlethal · 26/05/2026 09:11

How often do you personally come across mixed sex facilities ( aside from single occupancy rooms)?. It can't be that often. I can't say I come across them much at all...ususually only in newly built art centres - such as the Aviva studios in Manchester. And. of course, using a facility with our friends is not the same as being in a facility with strangers.

Yes, at a newish art gallery recently, the women's (room with multiple cubicles) was labelled as being for "women and anyone who identifies as a woman." Which I'd call mixed sex. Cubicles not to the floor, sinks outside the cubicles. Hmm

I saw that, amongst other things, he was feigning concern for butch lesbians. Yeah, don't try that with Akua.

So he says that as a gay man, he has been on the receiving end of homophobic violence. Obviously this is unacceptable. So why then is he not campaigning for gay men to use the women's toilets? It makes as much sense as for TiM to use them.

Are you in Liverpool by any chance? I am too.

the hospital was in Liverpool yes!

edit to add did you see the punk lady also?

storminabuttercup · 26/05/2026 12:16

Akua is great on that thread. Lots of people wanting evidence of where men in dresses have been a risk to women in toilets, they just don’t get it do they?

we don’t want men in our safe spaces be that toilets or prisons we don’t have to give any evidence to back that up because it’s the law. I don’t get why this particular law confuses people so much

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 26/05/2026 12:30

Mostly because many people are desperate to privilege men, for varying reasons but all of them sexist.

The law is there to provide a group (each half of the population, but we're only ever talking about women) with a necessary resource. It is not about individuals, it's about providing a needed accessible equality resource for that group.

How sad individuals feel about this because they want to be in that space is irrelevant, so are their chromosomes, so is their appearance and surgery and medication history, they are not in that group and that resource is not for them. There will now, by law, need to be accessible gender neutral provision so their need for access and equality is also met.

Individual tragedies do not outweigh the needs of the group for that provision, which relies on it being protected from men.

Also, many men are deeply uncomfortable around trans women. They don't want to accommodate them in the gents - they want them in the ladies as a way of keeping the gents for men they approve of.

I hesitate to speak for 'all men' (especially on MN!), but I really don't think that is true. I don't think most men think transwomen should use the Ladies. Alongside their wives, daughters, etc. I agree that it is not women's issue to solve.

She didn't say most men, she said many - as in all those men shouting on social media for women to let "transwomen" use the ladies. There are indeed a lot of them.

ElenOfTheWays · 26/05/2026 14:45

Dear Owen, why are you beating up transwomen in the men's?
That's not very nice you know.

As a PP said, it's quite possible that this was not so much homophobic as OwenJonesaphobic. He really is an infuriating little tit. I can completely understand (not condone) the urge to smack him upside his head

I've come across something similar to this before.

Harlan Ellison always said that he had been bullied as a child because he was Jewish. Many years later, a reporter went to his old home town in order to do a piece about him, and mentioned this to a group of people being interviewed, who had known him when they were all children together. They looked at each other and more or less scratched their heads before one said "I didn't know the little shit was Jewish as well."

loislovesstewie · 26/05/2026 15:15

I agree, the very sight of LOJ makes me feel like I want to smack him. I think it's because he always looks smug.

He's either always looking smug or earnest. Usually about things he has misunderstood or is otherwise very very wrong about.

He's like that nephew in the family who discovers sex and Big Ideas at university and thinks no-one else ever has had such sexy or Bigly Ideas ever before. You nod along with a sigh safe in the knowledge that eventually they grow the fuck up.

Except he didn't.

Owen Jones is not stupid. Of course he can see the gaping flaws in his own arguments. It must be exhausting trying to justify this to himself.

But we've been told so many times that no-one would go to all the trouble of pretending to be trans in order to access female spaces 😵‍💫

No, I just recognised the hospital you spoke of as 'Liverpool Women's'. It is the only dedicated women's hospital in the country, I believe. It is certainly the only specialist women's NHS trust. I've undergone a couple of procedures in there, and my graddaughter was born there.

It’s a remarkable place. My apologies to derail but I have had all my children there and I also found out there that the baby I was having wouldn’t be able to be born alive in there, I’d gone from choosing baby grows to being told my baby wasn’t going to be born within hours so my head was spinning, the way those staff dealt with me was amazing. I’ll never forget their kindness, when I went back with my last baby who I swore after my loss i’d never have, the midwife who looked after me came to visit us on the ward when baby had been born. And another thing, when I was pushing out one of my larger babies (almost 11lb) I actually said, “oh no, not the gorgeous midwife from the telly when I’m pushing Goliath out my fanny, tell her to go away” and she was very nice about it and delivered Goliath regardless of my moaning 😂
