Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

"Like a snowball: the growth and impact of the gender critical movement in the UK" - if you wanted a very good reason to never give Amnesty a penny, this is it. But a lot of people will read and believe.

"Over the past ten years the situation for LGBTI+ people in the UK has deteriorated. In particular there has been an organised backlash against trans people’s rights starting in 2017/18. This report maps the gender critical movement in the UK and the role of the media in normalising anti-trans rhetoric.

Our research shows that an organised gender critical movement emerged as a response to proposals to reform the Gender Recognition Act in 2017/18 and has gained huge influence in public and political discourse since then.

Between January 2020 and April 2025, media coverage of issues about trans people has been excessively high compared to the size of the trans population, their role in society, and public interest in these topics.

Four outlets examined in the research published 17,000 articles between January 2020 and April 2025, an average of 9 articles per day and ‘gender critical’ framing became common over this period of time while the voices of trans people have been almost completely absent."

Like a snowball: the growth and impact of the gender critical movement in the UK

Explores the rise of the gender critical movement in the UK, its media influence and impact on trans rights. Read the full report and technical summary.

By pure coincidence there was an Amnesty International fundraiser shaking a bucket for donations at the train station I went through earlier. I scowled at him. 😂

That showed him 🙄.
Imagine being against a human rights movement

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 20:51

Weve had enough of man's rights movements.

HUMAN rights movement. You would defund an important organisation that fights tirelessly for ALL humans. Yes, including trans people, but also women. See below:-

Amnesty International champions the human rights of women and girls globally by holding governments accountable for ending discrimination, preventing gender-based violence, and fighting for sexual and reproductive rights. Their actionable work encompasses several key areas:
Decriminalizing Abortion & Healthcare Access: Amnesty campaigns to remove women from the criminal law related to abortion and ensures access to sexual and reproductive health services, having played a crucial role in historic reproductive rights victories like Ireland's 2018 abortion referendum.
Preventing Gender-Based Violence: They work to end impunity for rape and sexual violence in conflict zones, advocate for the establishment of domestic violence refuges, and continually fight against practices like forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).
Protecting Activists: Through initiatives such as the Global Women, Peace and Security Agenda and their broader casework, they actively monitor abuses and demand the release of jailed women human rights defenders worldwide.
Rights of Vulnerable Groups: They push for legal changes to protect survivors of trafficking, as well as champion the decriminalization of sex work to ensure the safety and human rights of sex workers are legally protected.
Global Campaigns: Through major movements like the My Body My Rights campaign, Amnesty mobilizes youth and communities to deconstruct cultural stigmas, combat sexual harassment, and demand bodily autonomy.

Amnesty is a crock of shit. I supported them for years. They've gone bad.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 21:01

Putting things in all caps isnt persuasive, btw.

Have you thought that maybe it was you who has gone bad? Your reaction to them showing kindness to a group of largely blameless people that you hate seems a bit extreme

It’s not a human rights movement anymore though, is it? That’s the problem. I, like many other people here, have supported them in the past, and I'm beyond fed up with what they've become.

Which GC feminists are campaigning to have abortion rights removed?

NotMyRealAccount · 21/05/2026 21:22

Another former supporter. For many years I was willing to accept that there would be campaigns with which I didn't entirely align with the charity but that Amnesty International was well intentioned and a net force for good. Its determination to push for males to have continued access to female spaces makes me wonder about the motivation behind the graphic publicity material it's currently putting out about atrocities committed against women in specific parts of the world.

I trusted Oxfam to be what it said it was for far too long too.

LGBTI+ ??!

what's the I?
did it kill the Q?

FML

You know what I looked at the acronym earlier and I couldn’t figure out why it looked weird and for hours I’ve been thinking that looked weird and now I know they took the Q!

So all the human rights organisations who believe ALL people deserve safety and human rights, somehow offends you?
Are there any other lists of law abiding people you feel do not deserve basic human rights? 🤷🏻‍♀️

MynameisnotJohn · 21/05/2026 21:36

Charli. Why do you think anyone on here wants to deny human rights to trans people? Don’t be silly.

MynameisnotJohn · 21/05/2026 21:37

And what basic human rights do you think GC people are trying to interfere with?

Which GC feminists are campaigning to have abortion rights removed?

Here’s a few.
Kishwer Faulkner
Kellie Jean Minshull
Miriam Cates
David Alton
Caroline Farrow
Joanna Williams
Andrea Williams
Dennis Noel Kavanaugh

Also organisations that fund you such as Heritage Foundation
Turning Point UK
Christian Concern.

All easily googled. There are others but I’m not spending all night on this

I am genuinely sickened.

Misread the post

MynameisnotJohn · 21/05/2026 21:42

I’ve stopped supporting amnesty since they concentrated more on pressure groups in the west and campaigning for people who already have access to an entire infrastructure of rights and protections than advocating for people abroad suffering horribly with no recourse to anything or anyone.

GreyskySexRealistsky · 21/05/2026 21:42

It sounds like you've been jolted out of your echo chamber Charli. That can be difficult.

MynameisnotJohn · 21/05/2026 21:37

I’m not listing them. You know what you want to take away from them (ranging from toilet privileges to their bodily autonomy, their very identities and their healthcare. And their dignity even in death. The APPALLING things you folks have said when a trans person is murdered or a trans kids has taken her life)
some of the things I’ve read on here, it’s hard to believe there’s any mums on Mumsnet

Thelnebriati · 21/05/2026 21:46

Amnesty signed a letter to remove rights from people with gender critical views, so quit it with the DARVO.

''The letter plainly calls for an end to giving them airtime, which must include being banned from the State’s national airwaves.
It refers to denying legitimate “representation for” them, not to “presentation of” them. The different meanings of these words are clear and unambiguous.''

Charli seems to think ‘we’ are funded and some kind of cohesive movement. Not just a random representation of mostly female humans on a (free) parenting website.
