"Over the past ten years the situation for LGBTI+ people in the UK has deteriorated. In particular there has been an organised backlash against trans people’s rights starting in 2017/18. This report maps the gender critical movement in the UK and the role of the media in normalising anti-trans rhetoric.

Our research shows that an organised gender critical movement emerged as a response to proposals to reform the Gender Recognition Act in 2017/18 and has gained huge influence in public and political discourse since then.

Between January 2020 and April 2025, media coverage of issues about trans people has been excessively high compared to the size of the trans population, their role in society, and public interest in these topics.

Four outlets examined in the research published 17,000 articles between January 2020 and April 2025, an average of 9 articles per day and ‘gender critical’ framing became common over this period of time while the voices of trans people have been almost completely absent."

Cover positive stories about trans people, their lives and contributions to their communities and society.

Your periodic reminder that Amnesty is the group that refused to support Alexei Navalny due to differences over rainbow issues. This entire sector is irredeemable.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 21/05/2026 13:09

And hide all the ones that ended hideously for women and children.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:09

Qualify GC and explain that it is an ideological stance that seeks to restrict the rights of trans people held by some lobby groups.

Which rights does it seek to restrict, Amnesty?

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:11

Actually I'd missed this para before the recs:

The press has a critical role to play in shaping public attitudes and holding the government to account for its actions, or lack thereof. To support journalists in their daily work, the following practical recommendations are designed to help incorporate more accurate, fair, and responsible reporting on issues affecting trans people. Amnesty International UK recommends the following:

That's telling in how they see the role of the press.

Shaping attitudes.

Can you tell me a little bit about that? I've just finished reading his memoirs - but this issue did not come up.

I assume its this;

'Some of the calls to revoke Navalny's prisoner of conscience status quoted a Twitter thread by Katya Kazbek, a freelance columnist published by the pro-Kremlin channel RT amongst others. She reposted Navalny's controversial videos after his arrest in January, describing him as an "avowed racist" and accusing supporters of "whitewashing" his nationalism.
Ms Kazbek, a pseudonym, describes herself online as a "feminist, LGBT researcher, citizen of the world", but her posts include praise of Stalin and also echo Kremlin claims that Alexei Navalny is controlled by the US government.'

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny attends a hearing in Moscow, Russia, on 20 February 2021

Amnesty strips Alexei Navalny of 'prisoner of conscience' status

Amnesty strips him of the status but links it to an "orchestrated campaign" to discredit him.

Reduce coverage to evidence-based reporting of issues that do affect trans people directly, and when doing so, ensure the voices of those affected are front and centre.

Don't report issues that trans-identified men and TRAs have caused for women, or, if you do, ensure you put a positive spin on the latest attempt to get a woman sacked.

PickleC · 21/05/2026 13:14

To think I used to basically run a local group before falling out with them on their bat shittery take on women's rights. Not just trans issues but the prevailing 'sex work is real work' feel to what came out of the centre. This is the same Amnesty that ran a Stop Violence Against Women campaign well before the point they would tie themselves in knots about even defining what those pesky women even were of course.

The last straw for me was when the Portsmouth group joined in the demo against the Filia conference there. The chalked graffiti was horrific and the chants while we heard from survivors of sexual violence inside were the most awful example of how Amnesty had utterly lost its way.

PickleC · 21/05/2026 13:15

And yes the Navalny incident was shameful. Funnily enough you should retain human rights even if you are guilty of wrongthink but that wasn't their view on it

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:15

'...reported hate crimes have also increased. Since 2017 hate crimes against people with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment have continued to grow and increased by 56% between 2020/21 and 2021/22 and again by a further 11% the following year. The number of recorded incidents decreased by 2% between 2022/23 and 2023/2453. However, to put these figures in context, hate crimes are vastly under-reported.'

So they went up when trans activists asked people to report more, and then dropped when the police said 'this is mental, misgendering someone is not a hate crime'. Iirc.

Yeah, I wish I'd known about that way back when.

How tf do these organisations manage to just blithely continue after things like this? See also, Harriet Harman's career.

Amnesty International and Liberty are two separate organisations. Liberty used to be called the National Council for Civil Liberties in the 1970s.

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 21/05/2026 13:16

Increase the representation of trans people in reporting, both as authors and as respondents.

Don't hire the best person for the job. Make sure you hire someone who is on the RSOH, and who will write what we tell them to write.

(BBC, anyone?)

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:17

'Financial resources of the GC movement

In contrast to the organisations analysed in the first part of this research, all GC groups mapped, except three, are informal or micro-companies, and therefore, it is challenging to understand the financial resources they have available.'

Oh noes! Wherefore the Russian Xtian cryptodollars of the terfery?! Who can say where these awful women get all this money and how dare they spend it in ways we deem the Wrong Side of Our Glorious History?

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:18

Thank you. So, Amnesty did not support PIE? Googling is not throwing up anything.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:19

'The GC ecosystem is diverse, and while it is possible to identify groups with distinct priorities and tactics, all share broadly the same goals and appear to closely collaborate and endorse one another.'

What are those goals, Amnesty?

Can you say 'Women's rights'?

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:21

'‘trans issues’ have been elevated to top political concerns for the press. The most recurring name in bigrams by far is J.K. Rowling.'

Bigly bigrams, JK! Well done, that woman.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:22

'Previous Corpus Linguistics Analysis has shown a sharp growth in the amount of press coverage related to so-called ‘trans issues’38 with roughly three and a half times as many articles in 2018-19 compared to 2012. In addition to increased volume, the sentiment of the coverage was negative, with trans people increasingly described as involved in controversy, demanding or aggressive and with a propensity to be offended'

😶

Isn’t the TRA “ecosystem” exactly the same?

'In the UK, compared to the US or some European countries, legal challenges to limit access to abortion have historically been unsuccessful. In our assessment, legal challenges to the ability to consent to gender affirming healthcare, pursued by GC actors, are not only shared by ultra conservative Christian groups but can also work as a proxy to diminish access to healthcare across the board, including abortion and contraception, by undermining ‘Gillick competence’.'

I mean, fuck you, Amnesty.

Suggesting that feminists are attempting to undermine access to abortion and contraception is absolute offensive fucking hogwash.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:24

As a result of legal challenges by GC groups, in the UK legal gender recognition has been restricted, if not made redundant

It's not restricted. Any bloke can have a certificate to say he's a woman. It just doesn't buy him the right to use women's spaces.

Sorry, lads.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:26

'...we consider the demands of GC actors to be the same as those of ultra conservative Christian groups.'

All this effort and a shiny report, and they are no further forward than the TRAs in 2018 accusing us of being Xtian Rightwing US fundamentalists.

If they weren't so stupid, they'd be dangerous.

Spot on. This statement from them is a proper 'tell me you have no idea about feminism, the GC movement and women's groups without telling me you have no idea'.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2026 13:28

The report is not authored.

I'm not surprised. 😂

and...
Most media reports about trans people have a negative sentiment, while trans people are hardly seen in stories. When they do appear, it is as criminals or murder victims.

Well, Amnesty there's a very good fucking reason why the negative reports of criminals are high compared to the size of the trans population...give yourselves another decade and you might be able to work it out.

And Amnesty there are more men who say they are women who are murderers than murder victims.

Utter twats.
