I'm also considering that he came from the St George area, and seems not have been outside it very much. St George is an odd kind of place. It's a bit geographically isolated - four hours drive from metro Salt Lake - and almost everyone there is Mormon. It has a kind of stodgy conservatism that a bright young man would want to rebel against.
But if you're a right-leaning online edgelord from that culture, your natural environment is DezNat. And, although Utah authorities have been warning against DezNat for years, I've never seen any evidence of it having a violent element. Its main activity is winding up Mormon church leaders by creating funny memes based on 19th century doctrines that the church finds embarrassing.
A young man who's dropped out of church, dropped out of college for unknown reasons, appears to have a gay furry boyfriend and was constantly fulminating about Charlie Kirk "spreading hate" - it seems much more likely that he leaned to the left. Though it might be a very idiosyncratic meme-heavy leftism that he's DIYed for himself.
