Well done, Martine!

WhatterySquash · 22/06/2025 10:36

I bloody love Martine, I clicked on this thinking it would be her. The BBC can’t sack her for being accurate now!

I’ve always really liked her and her no-nonsense approach and would have been so disappointed if she’d started with the genderist nonsense. Now that’s who should be presenting woman’s hour.

Strawberryfields18 · 22/06/2025 10:37

I fully support trans people & how they wish to identify. I do not support changing language to fit their narrative

EmmyFr · 22/06/2025 10:37

Thankfully in France we're not as far down the craziness road (but there is some heavy pushing) - the downside being that we don't get moments of joy like the SC ruling or, well, this 😁

A young woman I know (late 20s) got married last year, and DH and I were both invited. My DH doesn't drink alcohol, and I asked if there would be alcohol free booze there, for the toast and whatnot. She said 'oh yes, we have some on order. There's going to be 3 pregnant people there, so they won't be drinking alcohol.' This was me when she 'said pregnant people......'

dudsville · 22/06/2025 10:42

I didn't know this about her, what an enjoyable thread that's enabled me to catch up about her achievements!!! Knowing she's out there doing this makes me reconsider getting back to watching the news, knowing a presenter is protecting the truth over spin.

Tapoopoo · 22/06/2025 10:43

Ive only seen the clips of her on here but from those... I love her.
The eye roll was brilliant!
I hope she doesnt get into bother.

Yes. I am a woman. Not a "person with a uterus".

👏👏👏👏

The interview with Heather Herbert is sheer class. She stuck to the facts, did not get irate and calmly walked Herbert into a self-contradictory mess. I can imagine Herbert switching the laptop off and going “what the fuck did I just say?”

Nah. Herbert would need some self awareness to be able to do that.

Throwing this out there to get poster’s thoughts….The interview with Heather was great, because Martine critiqued the arguments put forward and challenged where there was a lack of coherence between the different claims being made. I expect those on the TRA side of things regarded the interview as hostile.

I regarded the questioning of Baroness Faulkner by the WEC to be hostile. The context of multiple people versus one might have contributed to how inappropriate it seemed, but I’d think there was more to it than just this.

What thoughts do people have about the differences that makes Martinez’s approach with Heather different to the questions by the WEC?

This a good question to ask. Personally, I think it is a number of factors. First as you say it is about numbers. Secondly, I think tone of voice makes a big difference. The interview with HH would have been difficult for HH but the tone of voice was calm throughout. I don’t think WEC was the same.

Yes. I am a woman. Not a "person with a uterus".

Or 'bodies with a vagina' (Lancet, September 2021)

Or 'those with a cervix' (Scottish Government cervical screening radio campaign, October 2021)

Or 'non men' (Green Party, numerous occasions)

There's so many more examples as well.

"PREGNANT PEOPLE"
😂😂😂

I had never heard this expression but I've heard it all now 😂

I attend a lot of meetings with the NHS - a worrying number of ppl use it with a completely straight face

I hope she isn't sanctioned though.

After the Supreme Court ruling, how could the Beeb possibly justify that?

Boiledbeetle · 22/06/2025 10:51

DiamondThrone · 22/06/2025 09:13

Yes, she gave it the eyeroll it deserved. Good for her!

She'll probably be in trouble with the thought police in the BBC though 🙄

I have visions of her being dragged off for 're-education' straight after she came off air!

MelodyMalone · 22/06/2025 10:53

"Non-men"! 😭😭

We're not women any more, we're just - not men?

What's the rationale for that one?

Pleasantsort · 22/06/2025 10:54

Martine is great. Oh Heather ! Had a "discussion " with Heather a few years ago when I was on Facebook with a female Unison official ( TWAW) regarding Self ID and let's just say, I just decided there and then that Unison was a lost cause. Completely attempted to mansplain me and tell me I had nothing to worry about and all my concerns were all in my paranoid little head. Awful.

everychildmatters · 22/06/2025 10:56

Fair play to her. Stop. Erasing. Women.

heartsinvisiblefury · 22/06/2025 10:57

Misogyny.

Nah. Herbert would need some self awareness to be able to do that.

I thought Heather seemed quite hesitant and befuddled by the end, at the moment of saying nah it’s not a big deal. There was a look of “this isn’t what I came here to say…”

But will have been instantly reassured it was fabulous and Martine is a meanie old TERF.

PinkiOcelot · 22/06/2025 11:00

Good. There’s no such thing as pregnant people.

MetricMs · 22/06/2025 11:00

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 22/06/2025 08:47

Did she, though?

I couldn't tell if she did actually correct 'pregnant people' to pregnant women or if she was just reading out a list: the aged, 'pregnant people', women and those with medical conditions.

She may of course have been making the point in a deliberately deniable way, in case her bosses tried to pull her up on it.

Then again, the way she said "women" might have suggested that she was amending the script for common sense purposes.

Who knows?

That eye roll was very clear imo.
Well done Martine!
