Wow, she changed a term to make sure trans men were excluded, what a shero, how very brave of her, as a member of the media, to engage in the media moral panic 🙄

They are biologically female, as only females get pregnant. And women, for equality purposes.

Did you miss the Supreme Court judgment ensuring that TM get maternity protections because biologically they are women?

I'm completely bewildered that transmen (ie biological women) seem to think that if they get pregnant they fall into a special little category of pregnant not-women.

TBH if they'd rather put their health (and their baby's health) at risk than acknowledge biological fact then I kind of feel that isnt my issue.

WithSilverBells · 26/06/2025 23:12

The moment at which any transman discovers she is pregnant, she knows 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, that she is a woman.

She doesn't need any language-mangling to understand that, from then on, the words pregnant, mother, maternity, childbirth and breastfeeding belong to her.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 27/06/2025 06:28

It'd be more inclusive to offer full sign-language interpreting for all tv news broadcasts and I bet there are more Deaf people who are pregnant than there are TM or enbies.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 27/06/2025 07:41

Bottom line for me is gender-inclusive language actively disadvantages other vulnerable and marginalised groups like immigrants and people with differences of cognitive development who need plain language in public health communication. I don't think the right of TMs and enbies to be visible in language trumps the need other vulnerable groups have of accessible language.

genandtonic · 27/06/2025 08:13

My first language is English and I still get muddled. Trans man should be man in a dress, trans woman should be woman in trousers.
!

That's why it's clearer to use the terms "male transexual" & "female transexual" as then there is no ambiguity about their sex. Transexual is the word used in the legislation. "Trans man" & "trans woman" have no legal meaning.

I know what you mean, but it's more like "man who identifies as woman" and "woman who identifies as man". Either sex can wear dresses or trousers!

highame · 27/06/2025 08:53

The language was always ment to confuse. A great way to stop debate

Piss off and read the room outside your tiny self-righteous bubble.

Most real female women loathe these attempts at erasing us from the language.

Every single human was born from a real female woman. Women are PROUD of this. It is a pathetic denial of reality to be mincing around with words like “pregnant people”.

If a trans man’s dysphoria is so terrible that they can’t be reminded of being female by a general use of the word “woman”, then why on earth have they got pregnant? That’s 100% female activity. God knows how someone that mentally and emotionally fragile is going to bring up a child.

This is something I just cannot understand and I wish that TRAs would explain it in very simple language that we can all understand.

And pregnancy, wombs, breasts and even breastfeeding 🤮, being called a mother, etc are all things that transwomen (males) go on about aspiring to and being entitled to because they are “women” - and get pandered to by the NHS, breastfeeding orgs and all the same numpties who come up with terms like “pregnant people”. So if you’re a TW then you must have these things because they are womanly and affirm you as a woman. But if you’re a TM then they have nothing to do with being a woman Hmm

The BBC has the responsibility to make sure that the news uses standard English so that it can be understood. And that it is not confusing.

This was also a message giving health warnings. If a message is to be received by those who need it most, then the correct term is indeed pregnant women. If a person who has a philosophical belief that doesn't reflect material reality cannot understand the common usage of the words of their primary language because they put mental blocks on messaging, even vital warnings, unless it complies with their personal philosophical belief, they need to seek better mental health support.

People with transgender identities are people who share a philosophical belief about themselves and it is one that doesn't reflect material reality. This is because there is no biological or neurological marker that has been found.

No other group has their philosophical belief (one that doesn't have a basis in material reality) centred in language used by the BBC where the BBC changes the language that refers to all people to suit that one group.

But thank you for pointing this out. Because the more you and other posters point this type of thing out, the more that the general public understand.

I see yet again the 'rights aren't pie' crowd suddenly find every fucking thing is pie when it comes to naming women correctly.

Language is power. It’s why so much of this is contested. We need plain English for accessibility.

Gender ideology comes with its own language for a reason, as you say.

Exactly.

Nothing like a man telling women what they can and cannot do with regards to maternal health.

Times don’t change much do they?

@BeeSouriante You really really don’t like women do you?

MelodyMalone · 28/06/2025 16:13

Bit off topic (maybe) but I know (sort of) someone who calls herself a non-binary woman. Has a female name, looks like a woman, is clearly a woman. So where does the non-binary come in? Genuinely baffled.

There's a lot of people I get grumpy with, but no I don't hate any group of people, that would be silly

Of course.

Was it yourself who told a Reddit thread that women like us (those fighting to retain our single sex services) are (and I'll see if I can remember this correctly) 'suckling on the penis of patriarchy'?

Attention seeking and a bit dim.

Really? When you consider who is saying that, that phrase brings it all into perspective.

Fuck, that is grim.

It must be a hugely destabilising, to hate the very thing you are trying to become.
