Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Over here you can only buy either streaky bacon which is very fatty or "Canadian bacon", which is virtually fat-free and tastes like cardboard. On the other hand, I have discovered the delights of pancakes (American version) with bacon and maple syrup.

I had maplecure streaky bacon in Canada and it was a fine thing. Maybe the crossover works.

As @Kucinghitam says the self righteousness on the boxing thing is off the scale, and there so much nonsense spouted with such supreme confidence it’s breathtaking. This thread appeared on my Twitter feed earlier https://x.com/crucibleofthght/status/1819028047447621703? Truly infuriating and widely praised. It’s as if the last 5 years haven’t happened, and every time there’s a new controversy there’s a new wave of idiots willing to take up cudgels against the badies without doing even the most basic research. To wit this truly stupid illustration is still being shared and applauded in 2024.

@Winterborne74 Ah, but you're missing the genius psychology of it! Can't you see, by the cunning way they've made the lower graphic look like a pair of tits, hordes of young men are going, "Duh, I get it now " ! 😄

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 02/08/2024 22:50

Gah! But I agree I think the whole fiasco has made a lot of people sit up and go what?

And someone posted on Twitter that in 1996 1,000 women athletes were asked about the sex testing cheek swabs, and almost none had any problems with them. The fact they were then abandoned and we now have this sh**show suggests industrial scale corruption.

Sex as written in your passport is all we need - indeed...

Winterborne74 · 02/08/2024 23:00

Sex as written in your passport is all we need not to mention that anyone in the UK can change their sex on their passport for a fiver.

duc748 · 02/08/2024 23:18

Again, I just can't see the end-game. Do the IOC really want to move towards a world where it'll become accepted that most 'women's' events will be won by men? Do they think that will go down well with the public? Or that it's sustainable?

SinnerBoy · 02/08/2024 23:26

Blimey, so if I change the name in my passport to Harald Hardrada, will that mean that I'm a 6' 8" 11th Century Norwegian warlord?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 02/08/2024 23:28

Worth a try, Sinner.

SinnerBoy · 03/08/2024 00:14

Well, it's no madder than me putting "F" in the blessed thing!

Just don't go near Stamford Bridge, that's all.

SinnerBoy · 03/08/2024 01:28

Yeah, I hate Chelsea.

I had to look up the connection there! 😆

anyolddinosaur · 03/08/2024 07:48

Harald Hardrada wouldnt bother with a passport - just as well as it's easier to change sex than name.......

NoBinturongsHereMate · 03/08/2024 08:59

Some good Olympic news. The crowd is not giving the Dutch rapist an easy time; https://x.com/David_Challen/status/1818697398119539171?

Yes, they do. Except they will be "women".
It seems ridiculous now, but it could happen. Think how, after only a few years of this being pushed in schools and mainstream media, so many kids and young people already believe that sex is GI, that some people are neither one sex on the other, etc, etc.
The public will eventually get used to it and normalise it. Women's sports for women will die.

That's why we have to win the war over language. This situation could persist for decades, centuries if we don't have the words to fight it.

DeanElderberry · 03/08/2024 09:44

I've taken to cooking my breakfast streaky rasher on a plate in the air fryer. There is no fat spattered round the kitchen, the bacon crisps beautifully, and once the fat has cooled it can be scraped off the plate into a bowl and kept for future gourmet usages.

I have felt this week (even before I read the BMA thing) that there's a strong 'PIE didn't die' vibe to all of this. I know those of you who have been here a long time have already talked extensively about that, but suspect there are some youngsters who weren't around in the 1970s (or who think everyone who was a live and politically active then is long dead) who have no idea.

That's even before the 'why shouldn't men hit women?' thing starts. I hope one of the side affects of all this will be boxing being out of the Olympics - I wish it didn't exist at all.

Kucinghitam · 05/08/2024 08:58

@DeanElderberry I think it's a broader version of “Every generation thinks it invented sex, and every generation is wrong” - every generation thinks it invented progress/inclusivity/diversity/Righteousness, and therefore is the first to experience oppression/discrimination on that basis.

Teen DDs seem genuinely astounded that we had openly gay/lesbian friends back in our schooldays, that gender-non-conforming people existed even when we were children, etc. Heck, DDs seemed genuinely astounded just a few months ago, DH and I went to a work friend's wedding, we were choosing a Mrs&Mrs card in the shop. This despite having several married LGB friends within our close friend/family circle. It's like DDs have gone around with special "new brave and stunning" rainbow blinkers on Confused

@Kucinghitam have your daughters not seen any music videos from the last 30 years or so? They're absolutely stuffed with GNC people!

DDs absolutely have seen loads of such things! ChezKuc almost all the music we listen to is 80s/90s, with a good seasoning of 70s rock.

That's cognitive dissonance in action, I guess.

How strange. I know there's no explaining the teenage mind, but what do they say when you point out to them that being GNC is really old hat?

They agree and also agree that sex stereotypes are bollocks, and that they know mammals cannot change sex! And yet in the next conversation they'll trot out [thankfully only some of] the usual Righteous thought-terminating cliches Confused

Article today in the Telegraph shows Seb Coe, favourite to be the next person to head the IOC, indicating a sympathy with the wrong side of history. www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2024/08/05/boxing-gender-row-sebastian-coe/

I've heard him speak about women's sports before and he did seem somewhat amenable to recognising the issues. But he was clear he thought they should only apply to 'elite sport' and all other sport should see (women) being inclusive. Presumably he hasn't thought about how women might reach elite level, or he just doesn't care that non-elite sportswomen and girls might face unfairness.
