Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Just clocking in... Thanks, Kuc

I'm arriving soon, can I pick up something on the way for you all.

AlisonDonut · 02/08/2024 07:14

Checking in.

anyolddinosaur · 02/08/2024 07:55

Will check other threads as I'm interested in that apology.

BeechLeaves · 02/08/2024 07:59

On the boxing thing, not sure if any of you have had a quick look at Reddit transgender thread. Loads of people on there are saying that sex doesn’t matter. That women can be as strong as men. Fucking nuts.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 02/08/2024 08:13

And while people were understandably distracted by the boxing, the BMA passed the motion to disavow and actively work against implementation of the Cass review.

This is effectively the doctors' union saying that they want to keep the surgery and endocrine destruction conveyor belt going?

BeechLeaves · 02/08/2024 08:58

God I wonder what Cass thinks. To have her own research ignored by BMA.

Not surprised, it's another example of formerly-respectable institutions captured by activist entryism.

Bacon buttie thanks, brown sauce, no butter. Thank you very muchly.

AlisonDonut · 02/08/2024 09:20

I had a lovely cheese and tomato toasties in cafe Nero yesterday, so one of those wouldn't go amiss.

Thanks in advance.

Oh no I use butter and have none of that brown sauce so i'll have to buy it

anyolddinosaur · 02/08/2024 10:05

Want a bacon butty now, tomorrow maybe. Having read about Dr Naomi Wolf I'm no longer interested in finding the apology.

I noticed the BMA being idiots, hopefully not all 69 of them. https://www.newstatesman.com/comment/2024/07/why-are-bma-councils-confidential-discussions-on-the-cass-review-a-matter-of-public-interest

'69' fnarr! Bacon and mushroom on toast with brown sauce, thanks. I'll put the kettle on, or there's fruit juice.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/08/2024 10:14

A fried egg sandwich, the egg having been fried in the fat of well-smoked bacon, with tomato sauce and on brown bread. Breakfast from Heaven.

That's fine I'll have it with butter and no sauce! 😁

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/08/2024 10:31

Mr Veg's uncle had a health check with a doctor who asked him if he still ate bacon sandwiches. He said yes and she said 'I suppose you put butter on the bread, don't you' and he said 'Oh no, I don't use butter, I dip the bread in the fat'.

The only way to make a bacon butty, as taught by my dad. In fact the best bit was getting an extra bit of fresh bread and scraping it round the grill pan to mop up the last of the fat and the crispy scraps of bacon. The only issue is that bacon is a lot leaner these days compared to when I was a child, so there isn’t enough fat to have spare “dip”.

(i just had my recent cholesterol results back and doctor said all the numbers were bang on for a woman of my age, so I’m now craving a guilt free bacon butty)

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/08/2024 12:25

Mr Veg comes from a family of butchers and they're like a pack of wild dogs about meat, so they've got every meat source locally checked out and know where the fatty bacon is. It all gets a bit much for me, but they enjoy it.

Haha, mr Harpy is also from a family of butchers and it made him almost vegetarian! He’ll have a bacon butty if it’s on offer and chicken and fish a couple of times a week but otherwise quite happy to forgo meat.

Britinme · 02/08/2024 13:20

Over here you can only buy either streaky bacon which is very fatty or "Canadian bacon", which is virtually fat-free and tastes like cardboard. On the other hand, I have discovered the delights of pancakes (American version) with bacon and maple syrup.

SinnerBoy · 02/08/2024 15:10

I'm not a fan of mopping the fat up, or cooking eggs in it now, what with all the white cack which comes out. I bought some dry cured from our excellent local butcher and even that was riddled with the stuff.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/08/2024 15:24

We're lucky with our butcher. The one time we got watery bacon and complained they said they were changing their supplier.

Britinme · 02/08/2024 16:27

Good point @SinnerBoy . One virtue of American bacon is no water in it (that I've found yet).

artant · 02/08/2024 18:10

Hello new thread.

As a vegetarian I am not a fan of bacon or of eels. Many years ago I did visit a very lovely eel, pie and mash shop though and was a fan of the tiled interior. It’s an optician now but still has the lovely tiles.
