Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Kucinghitam · 01/08/2024 17:21

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Thank you!

<bags the best chair and gets comfy>

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/08/2024 17:37

Bags second best chair. Thanks, Kuc!

Boiledbeetle · 01/08/2024 17:39

Sits on Cake and Vegemite!

Tarquina · 01/08/2024 17:40

Just announcing my presence on the thread. So what happens now?

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 17:40

Mmph hmm argh!

Kucinghitam · 01/08/2024 17:52

So... what's on the agenda today?

As I was saying on the previous thread, the Olympic boxing fiasco seems to have really set the cat among the pigeons. And it looks like The Righteous (having carefully considered the optics of the situation) have decided to go for the really hard doubling-down on obfuscation, mendacity, whataboutery, tone-policing and scolding. It's actually quite amazing to witness.

As awful as it was to watch that fight it will hopefully help to end the injustice of men, no matter whether they be trans or have dsds, or just outright cheats, competing against women. Running, or the discus etc is one thing, but boxing is just too dangerous to have such a difference in power between the competitors.

Not that I want men in any women's sport I should note!

It would be lovely if nobody posted on thread 2 Grin

<Licks the honey bits!> (Not the vegemite mind, I prefer marmite)

(That will shift her!)

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 18:36

I think I'll move Blush

MouseMinge · 01/08/2024 19:14

That boxing match is at best a farce. I was under the impression that it was against the rules to punch the face but that was foolish of me. That's by the by of course because someone with the actual y chromosome (my brain had anesthetic today so I might be wrong on chromosome), so biologically male, a man, is allowed to fight women because of gender bollocks. It's outrageous.

Britinme · 01/08/2024 19:17

Placeholding! I don't mind if I stand - you young things take all the chairs, don't mind me, I'm just an old lady....

From the last thread:

Please tell me the poor creature was dead when it went in there 😳

I don't think even the doctor knew but she did tell my flatmate that they were put up alive so that the man could enjoy the wriggling sensation.

Yeah, the world sort of dims when I hear stuff like that.

What are you seeing and where, Kuc? I think I've been blocked on X by so many TRAs that my feed is very unrepresentative, but it's pretty universally condemnatory.

I'm going by what others are reporting on the various threads on MN - screenshots and so forth.

Waitwhat23 · 01/08/2024 22:12

On Twitter, I'm seeing the quite astounding doubling down that Kuc describes. Billy Bragg and his predictable bullshite, the Algerian Football Media account are making digs at Carini, an IOC spokesman talking about 'hoping that we're not going back to the 'bad old days' of sex testing, and innumerable randoms with such stuff as 'Michael Phelps has long arms!!!', 'it's illegal to transition in Algeria!!!', etc etc etc.

On the other hand, some big names are coming out in support and one has publicly apologised to JKR.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 22:14

Who's apologised?

Waitwhat23 · 01/08/2024 22:25

Dr Naomi Wolf. I don't know the background but it seems a sincere apology.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 22:32

She's the woman Naomi Klein wrote about being confused with.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 01/08/2024 22:52

I saw another change of mind on Twitter as well - not a name I recognised, but someone who read the IAB statement and openly changed their position on 'female with high testosterone'. It was refreshing.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 23:44

I think there have been threads about the fire service; racism, misogyny, homophobia. I don't think this warrants a new one

This really makes me sad. I expect better from them. My laugh when I see a progress flag flying outside a fire station just got a little hollower.
