Emma Corrin and 'homophobia'

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 22/05/2024 17:11

Emma Corrin claims to have experienced homophobia since 'coming out' as non-binary.

Emma Corrin is in a relationship with Rami Malek.

Make it make sense.

Emma Corin, regardless of gender identity, is in a heterosexual relationship. Therefore they can't possibly be the subject of homophobia.

I actually think that's really insulting to victims of homophobia.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 22/05/2024 17:24

Of course she hasn't experienced bloody homophobia. People pointing out she's a straight woman not a super speshul non binary non woman aren't being homophobic.

Womblingmerrily · 22/05/2024 17:24

I think it's like before you have children, you think you know everything about it and then 10 years later you realise you were a dick.

Agreed! Bet a creepy man has never followed Emma and Rami home, or perved on them on the train for simply holding hands, both of which have happened to me on more than one occasion.

What did Mr Kavanagh say?

'The demand for homophobia seems to outstrip supply'.

Christinapple · 22/05/2024 18:57

Yes, this is homophobia.

Regardless what your views on trans or non-binary people are, it's worth pointing out the intent matters. For example if homophobic abuse (verbal or physical) is dished out because the perp thinks the victim is gay that is certainly homophobia.

'The demand for homophobia seems to outstrip supply'.

Not sure what this means, but homophobia is unfortunately an issue.

"Aida H Dee, the founder of Drag Queen Story Hour UK, has been attacked in a suspected homophobic hate crime in Cardiff, just a few hours after proposing to his partner."

ArabellaScott · 22/05/2024 19:03

Yes, this is homophobia.

What, someone being 'non binary' and getting abuse on that basis? No, it's not. It's nothing to do with her sexuality, which is the basis of homophobia.

Non binary means someone doesn't identify themselves as male or female. This has absolutely zip to do with who they are attracted to.

You could call it 'nonbinaryphobic' if you want.

Chersfrozenface · 22/05/2024 19:10

"Aida H Dee" (unpleasant name referencing a disability, but anyway) is a man - note the pronoun 'his' - as is his partner. So they are a homosexual couple.

Emma Corrin is female by sex, in a relationship with a man. So they are a heterosexual couple.

Heterosexual people cannot be the victims of homophobia.

You're confused. Emma Corrin is a straight woman in a relationship with a man. Nobody is giving her homophobic abuse. 'Aida H Dee' is a gay man, therefore yes, homophobia is very plausible.

It doesn't matter what they are, what matters is what the perp thinks they are.

As an analogy, think of those pedo-stings e.g the show with Chris Hansen where a pedo is stung by an adult posing as a minor online. Turns out the perp was interacting with an adult all along but because they were engaging with inappropriate discussion with someone they thought was a minor this counts as an act of paedophilia (including under the law).

Actually, Emma Corrin is a non binary person in a relationship with a man. That makes them a queer couple, not a heterosexual couple.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 22/05/2024 19:23

Oh god is this over privileged attention seeking wombat still whanging on about their specialness? Have they got a new film out or something?

Who thinks Emma Corrin is gay? And why?

Sexuality concerns sex not gender. A male and female in a relationship are a heterosexual couple.

If you want words to describe sexualities that deal with gender come up with some new words.

Yeah, no it doesn't. Sexuality is about biological sex. She's female, he's male, they are in a heterosexual relationship.

Signalbox · 22/05/2024 19:27

Heterosexual people cannot be the victims of homophobia.

They can if someone mistakes them for being gay. My DH was once head butted he thinks because someone mistook him for a gay man.

Chersfrozenface · 22/05/2024 19:27

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 22/05/2024 19:25

Yeah, no it doesn't. Sexuality is about biological sex. She's female, he's male, they are in a heterosexual relationship.

The clue is very much in the name.

Sexuality. Homosexual. Heterosexual.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 22/05/2024 19:28

No one believes they are a gay couple so it isn't homophobia.

MattDamon · 22/05/2024 19:30

I can't with her. She's a posh, white girl who attended a boarding school with fees starting at £8k/term and is currently dating a man.

This appropriation of homophobia is deeply, deeply offensive.

I don't need a new word. Queer relates to gender differences too. In case you need the Oxford definition:

'Queer: denoting or relating to a sexual or gender identity that does not correspond to established ideas of sexuality and gender, especially heterosexual norms.'

Even if it were true that anyone can perceive Emma Corrin's gender identity and somehow differentiate her from a regular woman and therefore perceive that they are a 'queer' couple rather than a regular straight couple they still wouldn't experience homophobia because Emma corrin is clearly, perceptibly and blatantly female and her partner is male.

Definition of homophobia: dislike of or prejudice against homosexual people.

Who are same sex attracted.

Make up a word such as 'queerphobia: if you want. 'Homophobia' is already taken.

Homophobia is abhorrent, as is misogyny and making disability the butt of 'jokes.' Perhaps this gentleman will have time to reflect on his own behaviour while he recovers.
