Emma Corrin and 'homophobia'

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 22/05/2024 17:11

Emma Corrin claims to have experienced homophobia since 'coming out' as non-binary.

Emma Corrin is in a relationship with Rami Malek.

Make it make sense.

I guess some people might think that she's a man because of her shaved head so they might not realise they're looking at a straight couple. I have a very feminine looking friend who shaved her head and a few people thought she was a boy! People aren't very perceptive.

suggestionsplease1 · 23/05/2024 08:39

Actually, OP can you please put down the explicit quote where Emma says they have faced homophobia, because at the moment I can only see this phrase used by journalists.

You're right, it's the Daily Mail who said that Emma Corrin has experienced homophobia, not EC themself. I am very happy to redirect my ire towards the DM for misusing the word 'homophobia'.

They may think she's a teenage boy if they somehow miss the breasts, but there's no way anyone thinks she's a grown man.

It just means she is bisexual in that case. Not queer

No it doesn't. Man + woman = heterosexual!

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 23/05/2024 06:59

She's most famous for playing Princess Diana. Who EC claims was "queer". I'll just let that sink in for a minute.

That is genuinely fucking hilarious.

I've never watched any royal dramas, I naturally assumed something like Bridgerton which is another thing I have never watched.

If you were assaulted because someone believed you were Jewish, would you think that the anti-Semitism of the offender should be noted or not in the crime write up?

If you think that shouldn't be noted because you are not actually Jewish yourself, you are doing a huge disservice to Jewish people out there, who need it to be noted when crimes are motivated by hatred towards them so that policing and legislation can recognise patterns of targeted crime.

Are you claiming that Emma Corrin has been physically assaulted because someone thinks she's a lesbian??

No. Maybe work on your reading comprehension skills.

I've read this whole thread, even the insane posts saying EC is in a queer relationship (whatever that is) and I still can't see how EC can legitimately be a victim of homophobia.
EC, a woman, is in a relationship with Rami Malek, a man. As far as I know she hasn't has any same sex relationships.
She is straight but likes to describe herself as NB which doesn't make her any less straight.
And as for the PP who said she could be mistaken for a lesbian, well so could any woman. Lesbians come in all shapes and sizes IME.
Also, isn't EC the person who stopped identifying as NB because her work dried up?

No, I think that was Demi Lovato.

I've read the whole thread and just realised Emma Corrin is not THAT Diana, she's the other one! Elizabeth Debicki is the one I recall (an excellent womanly Diana )

Many apologies for the mis-actoring. I will do penance.

VinnieVanDog · 23/05/2024 09:03

It's annoying that the Mail used the word 'homophobia' but I really like the way they've worded the article which makes their opinion on this complete bs very clear.

You’ve missed the point. A bisexual person may be in a committed, monogamous relationship with a person of the opposite sex. But unlike a heterosexual, if that relationship stops they may just as easily enter into a committed, monogamous relationship with someone of the same sex.

If she happens to be bisexual (and frankly I know next to nothing about Corrin) then just because she’s in a relationship with Malik now doesn’t change that.

viques · 23/05/2024 09:08

What do you do if you are non binary and you are having a horrendous flooding period when out and about, or indeed at home watching netflix? Do you put your fingers in your ears and go lalalalala. Similarly if you are non binary and get a huge boner when at the swimming pool , brazen it out or put your towel over your lap?

I really don’t understand non binary. You might want to believe you live your life without succumbing to societal sexual stereotypes of , for example, dress and behaviour, and even do so to a greater or lesser degree, but let’s face it our bodies know what sex we are and behave accordingly.

@suggestionsplease1 thank you for the link. I understand the concept of Perceptive Descrimination but from this thread I'm getting the idea that's not what has happened.

Instead EC is claiming homophobia because she is NB (in an opposite sex relationship) which is clearly nonsense as that's not what homophobia means.

Actually EC doesn't appear to have claimed that at a all, and as such this thread is a great case in point of how hostility and prejudice manifests towards people on the basis of mistaken perception.

Actually, this thread is a case in point of how the Daily Mail is full of shit. They can have most of my hostility and prejudice.

Although EC can keep a bit for saying that Princess Diana was 'so queer' and for calling for gender-neutral awards.

You made a false statement about a person, and there has been a pile-on on the basis of that false statement.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 23/05/2024 09:45

I haven't missed the point. You said that being a non binary female in a relationship with a man makes her bisexual! How?! Of course she might be bisexual, I have no idea, but her current relationship is a heterosexual one. Not sure why you would state it makes her bisexual if she identifies as non binary.

Chersfrozenface · 22/05/2024 19:10

"Aida H Dee" (unpleasant name referencing a disability, but anyway) is a man - note the pronoun 'his' - as is his partner. So they are a homosexual couple.

Emma Corrin is female by sex, in a relationship with a man. So they are a heterosexual couple.

Heterosexual people cannot be the victims of homophobia.

Of course they can, if the perpetrator assumes them to be gay.

If an effeminate boy is "gay bashed" by strangers, but he happens to be straight, does that mean the attack wasn't motivated by the attackers homophobia?

AdamRyan · 23/05/2024 09:54

I just googled Emma Corrin and given how she presents I can well believe she gets homophobic abuse.

Cannot believe people on this board are dismissing homophobia just because they don't believe in "non-binary". Go and watch Nanette.
