Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Starmer furious that Sunak should mention his definition of ‘woman’

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 15:11

PMQ’s today, Sunak highlighted Starmer’s famous comments that some women have a penis. Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber. Surely Starmer should realise that it is possible to be respectful and compassionate about trans people without parroting the insane lie that transwomen are women (because ‘woman’ is sex not gender)

Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak faces calls to apologise over trans jibe to Starmer at PMQs

The PM ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer's "definition of a woman" as Brianna Ghey's mother was visiting Parliament.

it was all just awful it was just a point scoring exchange ! although Keir starmer is clearly wrong women can't have a Penis I don't understand why the PM mentioned it. just awful.

lifeturnsonadime · 07/02/2024 15:15

Agree but was heavily castigated on another thread for saying so.

in that exchange I think that it was Labour that made it about Brianna to dodge the question. Brianna's terrible murder has nothing to do with Labour's position on women's rights.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/02/2024 15:17

This is what happens when you have an adversarial, FPTP political system run by men. They treat it like Debate Club.

Both idiots.

LSTMS30555 · 07/02/2024 15:19

I've just came on to say exactly this!
Glad someone's started a thread about it.
Yes of course we can feel absolute sympathy for the family & the way those 2 brutally killed but the facts remain the same women are women, men are men, girls are girls, boys are boys.
I'm sorry but putting on some makeup, a skirt & heels doesn't make you a girl.
I'm glad rishi didn't back down.

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 15:19

I didn’t see another thread on this. I don’t see any issue with Sunak pointing out what Starmer has said, Sunak needs people to remember what they are voting for if they vote Labour. AIBU (do I need to get the thread moved?!)

I absolutely do not believe that men are women and vice versa but I do think that it was insensitive of him to use it as nothing more than cheap shots while the murdered teen's mother was sitting right there. He should not have done that.

Tbh, the sessions in the house of commons are a ridiculous pantomime and not how politicians should be conducting themselves. Jeering, cheering, waving papers and competing to see who can be the 'cleverest' is childish. Is respectful debate and discussion really so difficult?

Lottapianos · 07/02/2024 15:24

'I don’t see any issue with Sunak pointing out what Starmer has said, Sunak needs people to remember what they are voting for if they vote Labour'

I agree, Starmer absolutely deserves to be ridiculed for being so inconsistent and pathetic on this issue. Politically though, it was a bit daft of Rishi because Starmer has claimed the moral high ground by pointing out that Brianna Ghey's mother was in the gallery, and making sure he has been photographed with her. Rishi really does have no political sense at all

PMQs has been a joke for a long time, it's just a willy waving contest

oldwomanwhoruns · 07/02/2024 15:25

You are not BU, @HagoftheNorth !

Sunak needs to keep asking Slippery Starmer the question.

But also, Sunak needs to get moving with some actual action, repeal the GRA and take the Gender nonsense out of the Equality Act and the Hate crimes legislation.

We need deeds not words

WickedSerious · 07/02/2024 15:26

'Starmer furious'.

Nope,I can't imagine this.

Falloverwalker · 07/02/2024 15:26

Shelagh Fogarty programme between 2 and 3 was interesting to listen to.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 07/02/2024 15:27

Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber.
Would Starmer have been furious even if the mother wasn't there? I suspect he would have been. He doesn't like his words being picked apart and looked at properly.

Agree with others about it being bad timing but Starmer is very good at wah, wah wah you meanie.

Lottapianos · 07/02/2024 15:28

'Shelagh Fogarty programme between 2 and 3 was interesting to listen to.'

Tell us more! Shelagh very good and plugged in to reality on this issue

ResisterRex · 07/02/2024 15:28

Starmer and Labour show that they cannot even consider this issue without centring the T. Talking about women isn't "anti-trans".

Sunak spoke about Starmer's flip flopping on women as an example of a u-turn so it was one of a long list. However, it's not clear that he has u-turned so there's that as to accuracy.

I see Starmer isn't even supporting Esther's call about social media. How telling.

SnapdragonToadflax · 07/02/2024 15:29

Trans women are not women, but it was a nasty, ill-judged comment from Sunak.

duc748 · 07/02/2024 15:29

For better or worse, neither Starmer nor Sunak are savvy politicians.

Shelagh is absolutely brilliant on this issue, you can listen on catch up on LBC. She is ultimately professional, fair, and fully does her research.
Bravo to the caller Eleanor I wonder if you’re on here!!!

nauticant · 07/02/2024 15:37

Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber.

This "fact" is good for outrage but is actually untrue. Mrs Ghey was in Parliament but not in the public gallery of the chamber when the exchange between Starmer and Sunak took place. Annoyingly though, Mrs-Ghey-was-there-to-witness-the-outrage-in-person has now become a "truthy" fact.

anyolddinosaur · 07/02/2024 15:40

So she was not actually in the chamber at the time and Starmer was just making a cheap gibe to try and distract attention.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 07/02/2024 15:41

'You can't say that' might be Labours election slogan.

GPTec1 · 07/02/2024 15:42

Whatever ones views on Labour/Starmer or even the Tories, here was a mother grieving for her murdered child, killed, partly for being Trans.

Sunak is proving to insensitive and out of touch (his £1000 on the Piers Morgan show)

Sunak has many more months to hit Starmer with this, why today? Starmer was correct to pull Sunak up on it.

Smacks of Trump, taking the piss out of a family whose son was killed in Afghanistan and being cheered for it.

nauticant · 07/02/2024 15:42

She wasn't in the chamber. This has been on the BBC news several times now and there's this:

Brianna Ghey's mother Esther was not in the public gallery for the exchange but entered shortly afterwards.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68229785

AndThatWasNY · 07/02/2024 15:44

God Sunak is a weasley little cunt isn't he. Time and place mate. Yes we all agree with you. Just maybe don't bring it up near a mother who gone for the worst ordeal possible for a cheap populist point.
Is it going to bet £1,000 on this on some crass way as well?

nauticant · 07/02/2024 15:44

But everyone is free to either believe reality or to believe a truthy narrative that's compatible with their political views. I'll stick with the former.

Thats irrelevant, Sunak wouldn't have known that, these are prepared "exchanges"
He has a range of responses, based on what Starmer "might" ask.

nauticant · 07/02/2024 15:45

Since 90%+ of the outrage is BUT SHE WAS IN THE PUBLIC GALLERY, I'll say bollocks to that "irrelevant".
