Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Starmer furious that Sunak should mention his definition of ‘woman’

PMQ’s today, Sunak highlighted Starmer’s famous comments that some women have a penis. Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber. Surely Starmer should realise that it is possible to be respectful and compassionate about trans people without parroting the insane lie that transwomen are women (because ‘woman’ is sex not gender)

Rishi Sunak faces calls to apologise over trans jibe to Starmer at PMQs

The PM ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer's "definition of a woman" as Brianna Ghey's mother was visiting Parliament.

Yep weaponising a teenagers brutal murder is grim, and you're right is now seen as controversial to speak biological truth. Agree it was mistimed perhaps but once you come to terms with the fact that no one cares about women you see this stuff everywhere.

I've just came on to say exactly this!
Glad someone's started a thread about it.
Yes of course we can feel absolute sympathy for the family & the way those 2 brutally killed but the facts remain the same women are women, men are men, girls are girls, boys are boys.
I'm sorry but putting on some makeup, a skirt & heels doesn't make you a girl.
I'm glad rishi didn't back down.

Why bring that up today when he knew she was there? It’s utterly pathetic having two fully grown men try and do one over on each other. Like a pantomime.

Starmer is disgusting to twist this narrative especially as Esther was not in the building until later.
Sunak's comment was about women's rights not a terrible murder.

Exactly this. Stating and reiterating a basic biological truth that the opposition doesn’t seem to be able to grasp is hugely important. Clearly Starmer bitterly regrets the fact that he is on record for previously coming out with such tosh and is furious that it isn’t being forgotten. If any one was disrespectful to a bereaved parent it was him by dragging her name into the debate so he could hide behind her grief.

There was no need to say it today. Totally stupid, I'm sure he was so carried away with himself he never thought how hurtful it might be for that poor woman to start that argument. He's got plenty of weeks to bring it up, just not today.

tachetastic · 07/02/2024 18:38

I honestly don't understand why what the Prime Minister said was wrong. I'm not getting into the argument as to whether a transwoman is a woman or not because I know my opinion is not valid on Mumsnet, just that the PM is entitled to point out U-turns that the Opposition have made, and vice versa. If the issue is the 99.9% comment, then I think you would have to pretty thin-skinned to take that as either an anti-trans or an anti-woman comment. It was just trying (and apparently failing) to be clever.

If someone has been so thoughtless there is nothing wrong with suggesting they should apologise.

Sunak is a vile smug man. Big bets on sending asylum seekers to Rwanda, putting his foot into his mouth today. He isn't suited to his role.

Gruhgahkle · 07/02/2024 18:38

At the heart of what happened was an extremely vulnerable child and a mother who had more empathy and compassion than all the politicians and everyone on each side of this debate put together.

'Starmer furious'.

Nope,I can't imagine this.

Like being worried by a dead sheep.

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 18:42

Gruhgarkle, But that wasn't at the heart of the matter, TWANW was a very minor part of Sunak’s comment, and Brianna Ghey wasn’t referenced at all until Starmer brought it up.

The TRAs are capitalising on this murder and it's likely it will be used as a means to prevent any meaningful discussion leading up to the GE.

Every time the dire impact on women's rights, and the medical scandal of the Tavi is mentioned, there will be howls of "Brianna" to shut down discussion.

I hope Rishi holds his nerve and continues to attack the lying misogynists in Labour.

'You can't say that' might be Labours election slogan.

The new improved slogan will be 'and now you cant even think it'

I agree, but however much I sympathise with a parent whose unhappy child died in such tragic circumstances and who has since conducted herself with such dignity it doesn’t alter the fact that people can’t change sex, and that fact sadly needs to be remembered and repeated every time the debate raises its head otherwise it gets lost in the shouty voices.

happydappy2 · 07/02/2024 18:49

that sky news article misgenders Rishi, calling him she. Just so confusing

It was inappropriate to say it in front of a mother who is grieving her murdered child. Sunak doesn't seem to have much commonsense, didn't he ask a homeless man if he was in business or something? Total fool.

It was Starmer who brought Brianna into it. Sunak was just quoting Starmers claim that 1%of women have a penis

Edited

Stop being disingenuous. It was a sneering joke. A joke. Utterly lacking in empathy.

soupfiend · 07/02/2024 18:56

In what way is saying that Starmer has claimed that women have penises (and disagreeing with that as a position) a dehumanising comment about Brianna?

People have lost all touch with reality, completely lost it

Gruhgahkle · 07/02/2024 18:57

EasternStandard · 07/02/2024 18:51

Exactly. TRAs will use it for their agenda.

And everyone needs to stop. Just stop.

These are CHILDREN.

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 19:03

Gruhgarkle, I’m not being disingenuous, I’m calling it as I see it. Sunak’s comment was nothing to do with Brianna Ghey. I’m allowed a different opinion, you are allowed to disagree

So how come Brianna's father is not asking Starmer to apologise, but is asking Sunak?

Sunak is appalling and not fit for high office.

The truth is the truth no matter how hurtful it might be to people’s feelings.
