Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Starmer furious that Sunak should mention his definition of ‘woman’

PMQ’s today, Sunak highlighted Starmer’s famous comments that some women have a penis. Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber. Surely Starmer should realise that it is possible to be respectful and compassionate about trans people without parroting the insane lie that transwomen are women (because ‘woman’ is sex not gender)

Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak faces calls to apologise over trans jibe to Starmer at PMQs

The PM ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer's "definition of a woman" as Brianna Ghey's mother was visiting Parliament.

Politicians should never slag off their opposite numbers for u-turning; ALL parties u-turn all the fucking time.

Having said that, I thought the 99% dig was quite good.

As if Brianna's killers gave a shit about second wave feminism, equality legislation or safeguarding.

HPFA · 07/02/2024 15:49

Anyone who thinks that Sunak came out of this well is off their heads.

This wasn't the time or the place and if Sunak had an iota of political savvy he would have known that.

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 15:49

Again, I might be out of step here, it was Starmer who mentioned Brianna, not Sunak, and Mrs Ghey’s presence (or the lack of it!) doesn’t make it wrong to highlight Starmer’s comments in this area

Now that I do agree with HPFA.

I feel like both of them just treat it like it's all just a big joke, women's rights being eroded, teens in MH crisis. It's just a points scoring exercise for them. The way they go on jeering is just vile. I feel like political discourse has hit an all time low.

Ramblingnamechanger · 07/02/2024 15:53

I am sure Brianna’s mother knows exactly what sex her child was. It really is extraordinary that reporting on this sad case never actually tells the truth, and even Woman’s hour talked about daughter and she. Yes it was horrendous but confusing the truth is not helpful.

beguilingeyes · 07/02/2024 15:53

"Sunak needs to keep asking Slippery Starmer the question."

But it wasn't a question, it was just Sunak trying to score points. It's Prime Minister's Questions, not Opposition Questions. There was no question.

The problem is if either one of them try to raise the tone, the other will tear into them.
Remember Corbyn tried the quiet polite approach and Cameron ripped him to pieces.
Like on here, i said something a pp didn't agree with and i got back "Bollox to that..."

Yes childrens Mh is in crisis and i'm pleased Lab have recognised and want MH specialists in all schools, might take a while but at least they recognise the problems, same with childrens dentistry.

i agree with HPFA 100%

Teentaxidriver · 07/02/2024 15:55

Slippery Starmer will allow the dismantling of (biological) women’s rights if he gets into power. No question. He just doesn’t want that fact highlighted ahead of a GE.

This, but as long as some posters feel that it fits where they are, they will overlook his absolute lack of decency. He does himself no favours by acting the way he does. He was crass.

Startingagainandagain · 07/02/2024 15:56

Whatever your views on trans people there is a time and a place to make such comments.

Making a 'joke' purely to try to score political points when you know full well a mother who lost her child through hate crime because she was trans is in Parliament that day is inappropriate.

Sunak is a pathetic little man with no shame or dignity who has disgraced the office of PM and this is yet another example of it.

He cares nothing for the rights of women by the way. This is just posturing to try to grab a few votes.

Anyone who thinks he gives a damn about women and feminism is just naive in the extreme.

Sorry to disappoint but the Tories have been doing that for the last 14 years.

Teentaxidriver · 07/02/2024 15:58

I think 2 O-levels Corbyn tried the polite approach due to his undersized intellect.

Flickersy · 07/02/2024 15:58

Sunak may have been correct but he was being a total twat about it.

DahliaMacNamara · 07/02/2024 15:58

Is David Lammy identifying as Femi Oluwole now?

Badly timed and petty attack from Sunak, in my view.

Teentaxidriver · 07/02/2024 15:59

Yes but the process will accelerate under Stamer. Astroturfing paid dividends till women woke up to what was at stake.

Brianna wore very sexualised clothing, and took photos of it in school.
It's utterly dreadful what happened, but calling for bans on social media for teens now?

Do you remember when we had politicians regarded for their integrity, even if you didn't usually support their party, like Mo Mowlem and John Smith? Seems like lifetimes ago.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/02/2024 15:17

This is what happens when you have an adversarial, FPTP political system run by men. They treat it like Debate Club.

Both idiots.

If only they did actually debate the issues of the day rather then resort to tabloid point scoring and/or completely ignoring questions altogether.

SidewaysOtter · 07/02/2024 16:01

I cannot understand why on earth Sunak chose today to make that jibe when Brianna’s mother was in the public gallery.

Picking holes in Starmer’s gender policy/views is like shooting fish in a barrel but today was not the day to do it. Sunak just made himself look like an arse.

But that’s the problem with PMQs and always have been - it’s a childish, adversarial dick-swinging contest that has all the nuance of a wrecking ball.

Mumsanetta · 07/02/2024 16:03

I don’t think it was a hate crime because she was trans?

Brianna being trans has nothing to do with Starmer not knowing what a woman is.

Hepwo · 07/02/2024 16:06

anyolddinosaur · 07/02/2024 15:40

So she was not actually in the chamber at the time and Starmer was just making a cheap gibe to try and distract attention.

Christ what a scummy user.

Hepwo · 07/02/2024 16:08

AndThatWasNY · 07/02/2024 15:44

God Sunak is a weasley little cunt isn't he. Time and place mate. Yes we all agree with you. Just maybe don't bring it up near a mother who gone for the worst ordeal possible for a cheap populist point.
Is it going to bet £1,000 on this on some crass way as well?

Edited

She wasn't near. And why has this particular murdered child's mother become so important?
