Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Starmer furious that Sunak should mention his definition of ‘woman’

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 15:11

PMQ’s today, Sunak highlighted Starmer’s famous comments that some women have a penis. Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber. Surely Starmer should realise that it is possible to be respectful and compassionate about trans people without parroting the insane lie that transwomen are women (because ‘woman’ is sex not gender)

Rishi Sunak faces calls to apologise over trans jibe to Starmer at PMQs

The PM ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer's "definition of a woman" as Brianna Ghey's mother was visiting Parliament.

"Describing something by" is not "reducing to". Try again

It is, actually. 🤷‍♀️

Why do you need it explaining? Genuinely, why? What do all women have in common? They were born and they will die. That's it. Stop reducing women to their biological functions - it's exactly what the patriarchy has always done, and you're running the patriarchy's errand here. Women are not walking vaginas.

We would like to understand your argument better and in order to properly understand an argument we need a definition (even just a rough definition!) of the key terms.

I highly doubt he's going to have to apologise. Sunak also addressed Esther Ghey remember. This is just Tories trying to flip the narrative. Classic DARVO.

In any case it pales into insignificance compared to Conservatives playing fast and loose with the rules. Breaking the law in "limited and specific" circumstances? Deliberately misleading parliament? Breaking laws they implemented, then claiming those laws are ridiculous? Putting in place legislation that a particular country is "safe" while simultaneously accepting asylum seekers from that country? How about all the politicians (including the PM now Shock) earning £1000 an hour for pushing propaganda on GB News? Giving billions of public money to their mates via various fast lanes?

If Starmer is made to apologise while all that is going on, it just shows what an absolute farce the Conservatives have made of our democracy.

Thank you for this.

I thought you were incensed over the PM bringing up the failure of politicians to state what a woman is, but I've realised that you don't care, this is really party politics for you and little else.

I'll support any politician who is brave enough to state biological reality and criticise any who won't.

No doubt if the parties were reversed you wouldn't be angry.

This is problem with party politics (and now what is called the culture war), people just disagree over an issue because who is talking about it.

Is it a lack of emotional intelligence if you can’t imagine how mixed-sex toilets might affect SA survivors?

Agreed and religious minority women.

But hey they're just not as important as the right of individuals like Eddie Izzard to be where he wants.

EasternStandard · 09/02/2024 09:56

Btw @IClaudine and others upset about misgendering Labour have trumpeted a new law including males in misogyny so they are already doing the heavy lifting for you

BackToLurk · 09/02/2024 09:59

Veronicaisaflower · 09/02/2024 09:50

Nope. You appear to think that accurately describing women in terms of their female reproductive capacity - the thing that sets them apart from males is 'reductive'. That's entirely your problem. You appear to believe that 'female' is somehow 'less'.

I do wonder in these cases whether you have the same difficulty with other mammals. If you have pets, for example, do you agonise over what type of neutering they require, because you can never identify what their sex is. Would you struggle to understand whether you should milk a bull or a cow? Or is it just with humans that you feign ignorance?

IClaudine · 09/02/2024 10:01

EasternStandard · 09/02/2024 09:49

So a male presenting as a woman on trial is ‘he’

And If the outcome is not guilty? Is it all on trial or just the criminals

And with a legal document stating he’s a female - why can you override it there. Does he use all male facilities too?

I answered the question you asked. My answer showed that we might actually have some common ground, but that is clearly not good enough for you. It is a shame.

Reducing women to their biological functions and biological attributes is exactly what is happening by adherents to Gender Ideology. Glad you see this for what it is - misogynistic patriarchy on steroids.

I'm wondering if my comment about Ezzie Izzard using he pronoun will be deleted. Just a reminder that Eddie describes themselves as gender fluid. With both boy and girl mode.

Izzard has no issue with making young girls uncomfortable when s/he uses women's toilets. Izzard has also had 2 failed attempts at being a Labour MP and seems highly respected in the Labour Party.

Need a job? Boy mode.

Need a pee? Girl mode.

Yes I’m asking another question

It shows the lack of foresight by creators of the GRA that they are too hard to answer

HagoftheNorth · 09/02/2024 10:08

HagoftheNorth · 09/02/2024 09:36

No we’re absolutely not walking vaginas!

we do, as a sex class follow a biologically defined developmental pathway which is starkly different from the male developmental pathway. That’s what’s obvious, sorry, any commonality with transwomen not obvious. Try explaining?

Veronica, are you able to address this?

Dominic Raab did that months ago.

I could answer them with a bit of thought and time, but I don't feel you are actually interested in what I think as an individual. The only thing you seem to want is for everyone to be in complete agreement with you.

EasternStandard · 09/02/2024 10:14

‘Labour will be proud to be the first to include gender in hate crime against women’

aka males

Idiots

AdamRyan · 09/02/2024 09:30

Labour aren't making it easier. Just less bureaucratic.
Tories are also making it less bureaucratic.

Just semantics.

Making it less bureaucratic makes it easier. When they've seen the harms to women!

Really disappointing of Labour particularly given the false premise that they have forwarded that the Equality Act as currently drafted protects women's single sex spaces, when it really doesn't.

They don't seem to care much about the harms to women though.

At least the Tories recognise that amendments to the EqUA are required.

Is hate crime against male trans people OK, then?

Sex based

It’s not hard

That's hardly in their favour when they've had 14 years to make amendments and haven't bothered.

Why aren’t they making those amendments then? They’re the government in case you hadn’t noticed. And have been for 14 years.

The harms have only been apparent over the last 2 or 3 years.

Rapists in women's prisons and men winning women's sport wasn't a thing 14 years ago.

It takes time, Kemi Badenoch is working on it.

Why won't Labour even acknowledge it?

So no changes in two or three years - what’s keeping them?
