I see 'Karens' and 'Mhairi Black' are both trending on Twitter.

MenWearOrnaments · 09/08/2023 20:03

Being called a "Karen" is actually a huge compliment, even if it's not meant that way.

It says you're not afraid to stand up for what you believe in, to confront others even when it's seen as socially unacceptable, to cast off the shackles of femininity that demand you to sit down and shut up.

I know someone who has first hand knowledge of Mhari and her galaxy sized intellect.

"Thick as mince" I believe is the verdict.

She's getting out before the SNP ship fully capsizes. Expect a rout in 2024. Starmer's majority will block out the sun.

Actually Mhairi isn't stupid. She has a 1st class degree from a good university. She is a middle-class (dad was a teacher) young woman, cos-playing a working class young woman. As she isn't actually working class, and never ventures outside her bubble of SNP sycophants, she assumes that working class people are stupid and coarse. Hence the idiotic statements and constant, performative swearing. She thinks working class = Waynetta Slob.

Yes, that is spot on. Maybe this is partly why I'm cringing for her. It's an insult to the many intelligent, hard working and astute working class people of Scotland.

If you've gone straight from uni into a highly paid role in politics I suppose one risk is that you have only a very crude grasp of this kind of social dynamic.

mach2 · 09/08/2023 20:46

A Viz character suggests itself: Mhairi Black (she's smoking crack).

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 09/08/2023 20:49

I actually feel sorry for her, to an extent. Most of us have idiotic views in our late teens/early 20s, coupled with an unshakeable sense of our own rightness. Many of us adopt fake aspects to our persona as a front, to conform socially or to conceal social anxiety - we pretend to like things we don't really like (clubbing! subtitled arty films!). Usually we mature and gain the courage to be more authentically ourselves. But Mhari has got stuck in her 19 year old persona because that is who she was elected as - it's literally a role and she is stuck playing it.

She also looks incredibly unhealthy. I know all the rumours but, even allowing for those, she looks awful for a 28 year old. As much as I despise what she is doing to undermine women's rights, I hope she gets out of politics and sorts herself out.

ArabeIIaScott · 09/08/2023 21:06

Yes, that makes sense - a kind of audience capture.

I think she's gone too far into one aspect of the role, though. She was elected, I imagine, largely because her constituents wanted to see independence. And possibly partly because she was a pretty stirring orator, especially for someone so young.

But she seems to have landed on 'Mouthy Working Class Swears a Lot' persona, and neglected the essential addition of insight, nuance, and honesty. Those were also what her constituents admired in her, I would think.

Just insulting people and being sneery is not admirable.

Did she never think of actually representing her constituents?

SirChenjins · 09/08/2023 21:56

She needs to be aware that her sexist, misogynistic slur on women aged 50 insults the largest demographic. A quick google search tells me “there were approximately 401,000 people aged between 55 and 59 in Scotland in 2021, the most of any age group in that year”.

I understand she’s enjoying her notoriety and moment in the spotlight as the gobby fish-frying burd fae Paisley but if she wants to be taken seriously as a politician then she’s going to have to do a whole lot better than shout childish insults at a huge swathe of voters.

RealityFan · 09/08/2023 22:08

Looking forwards to the Nicola Sturgeon memoirs out soon, where Mhari is described as "caring, for all her constituents, Karen and non Karen alike"

NitroNine · 09/08/2023 22:13

Do have to wonder quite how she feels she can justify her staggering expenses claims when her parliamentary contributions are practically non-existent.

(As a side note, politicians being able to claim for food & drink rather than having to purchase all their meals from their (extremely generous) salaries baffles me. I know the House sits late sometimes. Maybe Civil Servants providing advice on the [proposed] legislation could also teach MPs how to make themselves a packed supper 🤔

Dougalskeeper · 10/08/2023 01:30

She is a muppet.

Absolutely brilliant piece from Shelagh F there. Insightful, intelligent, thoughtful, measured - all the things that Mhairi Black, who has become a national embarrassment, is not. I sincerely hope Black is reflecting upon her offensive choice of words and comes to realise what a complete tosser she is.

Completely agree, Shelagh at her very best there.

In my experience this is very much not the SNP approach. I've had many SNP MPs and MSPS - each and every one has had different arrogance levels, but all have operated on a 'we know best what's good for you' basis.

ArabeIIaScott · 10/08/2023 11:04

I think the saying is 'set to broadcast, not receive'.

ArabeIIaScott · 10/08/2023 12:52

https://www.spiked-online.com/2023/08/09/mhairi-black-is-the-real-reactionary-here/

Spiked editorial.

'Gender-critical feminists are not the reactionaries in the trans debate. All they are arguing for is women’s rights, gay rights and freedom of speech. Meanwhile, their critics call them names and tell them to shut up – or worse, hurl punches, death threats and try to get them sacked. If you really think this is the progressive side to be on, Mhairi, then I don’t know what to tell you.'

Can anyone share a link to the Shelagh F article? I couldn't see one.

Mhairi Black is the real reactionary here

Comparing gender-critical feminists to racists is a new low even for her.

The hallmark of the leftist politician sadly. Mandelson was quite frank about the desire for a 'post democratic era' in which the proles would just go about their little lives and experts like him would make all the decisions and do unto them as they saw best.

You'd think they'd all be much happier somewhere like Russia or North Korea, that seems to be the spiritual home.

And then there's the 'set to broadcast, not receive' ones who are just.... I met one once at a local charity event, which was a brilliant opportunity to learn about some really outstanding community activities and support them. No one could get a word in edgewise and they did not learn or hear one thing the entire time they were there. They just evangelised at everyone about their personal hobby horse, which was searching for a particularly well known missing child, by going on holiday, sitting on beaches and studying the surrounding children.

Madder than a box of frogs.

ArabeIIaScott · 10/08/2023 13:03

Ha. It's the photo opportunists that surprised me, Frood.

One turned up at my workplace once, ostensibly to talk about what we did. Some effort was expended in presenting information, however his eyes noticeably glazed over as we tried to talk/discuss anything and he just started nodding like one of those dog ornaments. Cut someone off, managed a giant cheesy grin for the press camera, then fucked off again, having barely exchanged a word with anyone.

That was, apparently, the entire purpose of his visit.

Call me naive, but what the fuck is the point?

Skyellaskerry · 10/08/2023 13:05

@ArabeIIaScott you can listen to Shelagh on LBC radio catch up for yesterday, I think it’s there for 6 days, her programme is 1 -4, and the hour on this subject is 3 -4

DialSquare · 10/08/2023 13:05

Strange that Mishy sneers at middle aged white guys considering that the T is full of them.
