I don't think she has many moral qualms about being economical with the truth.

Yes, I wouldn’t describe her as gullible. She is Trumpian in the claims she makes and their ridiculous, bare faced nastiness. As for being mistaken for a man, just more unbelievable claims.

SirChenjins · 09/08/2023 16:08

Absolutely brilliant piece from Shelagh F there. Insightful, intelligent, thoughtful, measured - all the things that Mhairi Black, who has become a national embarrassment, is not. I sincerely hope Black is reflecting upon her offensive choice of words and comes to realise what a complete tosser she is.

When you start tracing it back, the money always links back to fundamental Christian groups in America, Baptist groups, anti-abortion organisations.
This is pure conspiracy theory. If Mhairi is that gullible, she's not fit to be an MP.

As opposed to the funding from B— Ph——, you mean?

Heliotroper · 09/08/2023 16:30

I wouldn't be surprised if Mhairi was being paid by Big Pharma as nearly everything she accuses people of she is guilty of herself.

Heliotroper · 09/08/2023 16:45

She reminds of the Clare Grogan character in Father Ted

"The Pope closed down a lot of the factories that were makin' the potatoes and turned them into prisons for children. "

The whole having a pop at 50 year olds is so weird, among all the other egregious nonsense. When I was very little I couldn't imagine being 30 years old as that was such a Big Number, but Mhairi is 28. Does she not imagine she will be 50 one day and might not think the same way about everything as she does now?

All of that disdain for older women; women are even doing it to each other now.

ArabeIIaScott · 09/08/2023 16:59

'Ms Black, who was one of the youngest MPs in history when she was elected in 2015, is known as the first person to use the C-word in the Commons'

'she said she was leaving Westminster, which is still her place of work until the 2024 General Election, because it is filled with “a*holes”'

She'd be kicked out of a pub for that behaviour. But I'm sure plenty of opportunities will open up for her after politics. Who wouldn't want someone like this for a colleague?

Foul-mouthed Mhairi Black says Westminster is full of 'a***holes'

The soon-to-be former SNP MP made the crude comment on stage at the Edinburgh Fringe where she also stated that her vote would be 'up for grabs' if the Nats break up the UK

What is quite disconcerting is how 2 other newspapers (links in OP) reported on the same event and carefully failed to report her more offensive comments.

I know papers are partisan, but it is so hypercritical that they will call out a right winger for offensive comments (quite rightly) but seem they feel no obligation to act in the same way towards someone on the left (or maybe she isn't left but just SNP).

Or suspect it is because they dont think insulting women is anything to be concerned about. (Not forgetting the audience applauded as did the crown in Trafalgar Square for MJB)

And then we get commentators on FWR saying we are all right wing because we are always quoting right wing papers. If we only quoted supposedly left / liberal papers by now the erasure of women would be nearly complete.

So I am really disgusted by MB but overall I am really concerned that women's sex based rights still only have a toe hold in the wider public. And we certainly cant trust the MSM to represent us. And they try to make out they are so superior to SM.

Well there will at least be one fewer arsehole in Westminster when Mhairi leaves

IwantToRetire · 09/08/2023 17:21

I see the Times article does also not report the remarks the Telegraph has made their headline.

Why is this? Wasn't it said and the Telegraph made it up? And if it was said why wouldn't the Times include, if not the actual quote, the inference of what was said.

The Times article has also been archived at https://archive.ph for when the share token expires. But articles archived do not include comments.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/is-mhairi-black-westminsters-laziest-mp/

'Of all the SNP’s 2015 intake who remain in parliament, Black has made the fewest spoken contributions — and by a rather large margin.SNP MP Alison Thewliss has taken part in 1,197 debates, while Alan Brown has spoken in 1,148. Philippa Whitford has spoken 1,384 times and Carol Monaghan 1,008 across more than 600 debates each. Black’s spoken contributions, however, span a mere 134 debates and come in at a rather underwhelming number of, er, 247.'

Is Mhairi Black Westminster's laziest MP?

Black’s spoken contributions, however, span only 134 debates and come in at a rather underwhelming number of, er, 247. Dear oh dear.

Another aspect of this that is depressing is that this talk was roundly applauded by its audience, and the venue didn't need to employ security tactics.

ie a speech that had it been directed at one of the other protected characteristics would have been challenged as being hate speech.

Meanwhile as part of the same overall event Joanna Cherry's talk has had to have security put in place.

And all she wants to do is talk about women's rights.

Do the media create this atmosphere or do they merely publish / broadcast what they think their users want to hear?

Black has previously said people have questioned her gender because she dresses differently

Who is doing that? Who created the atmosphere that said how you dress dictates gender? I’m reminded of that man screaming that he’s clearly a woman because he has a pink bag.

ArabeIIaScott · 09/08/2023 17:58

It's fine. If the SNP don't want the vote of '50 year old Karens' I'm sure there are other parties who do.

ArabeIIaScott · 09/08/2023 18:04

I like the comments saying 'I am Karen'.

VaddaABeetch · 09/08/2023 18:09

Mhairi is 28, she’ll blink & wake up 50. When she is a 50 year old white woman will she euthanise herself for society’s sake.

LoobiJee · 09/08/2023 18:26

Haven’t RTFT but….

“see if you’re a human being, you’re not an intellectual debate and nor should you be made to be one”

she actually said that? and with no sense of irony?

so activists can go around demanding that a male person who claims to feel themselves to be a member of the opposite sex should be treated as if they were a member of the opposite sex, and not only that, but should be believed to be a member of the opposite sex, but, in Mhairi Black world, that doesn’t count as turning that opposite sex into an intellectual debate?

Can she not hear herself?

Froodwithatowel · 09/08/2023 18:27

I do plan to live until all these bright young things are 50, and then inquire how irrelevant and useless they feel. Suddenly I feel that ageism will become a new-found passionate interest.

VaddaABeetch · 09/08/2023 18:37

Tanith · 09/08/2023 18:43

A grown up politician actually resorted to the infantile "Karen" insult??
Good heavens! Shock

I like the cut of your jib. I think I'll join you. It's only what 20 more years. I can survive that long.

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2023 18:49

What a shame that a politician that resorts to adhomien attacks, name calling and just repeating phrases she's read are cool in the US, in the absence of being able to make a coherent argument herself, isnt standing for re-election.

A damn shame an loss to the HoC.

What will it do without her intelligent, considered and well thought out input?

I too find that so utterly depressing. The SNP who for such a long time I voted for and admired have just completely lost the plot. When one SNP politician actually tries to have a reasonable discussion with her colleagues she is bullied and belittled then threatened on social media to the point where police are involved and still there is no real change from colleagues or proper condemnation. However MB saying such horrible things (sexist, racist and ageist) about other women concerned about their sex based rights is not only applauded but held up as the standard to which the SNP should follow.

I am now politically homeless, disenfranchised, depressed and frankly, quite scared to be a women in Scotland. I really hope things change for the better. In my opinion the only way this will happen is if another "Isla" Bryson incident takes place, perhaps within the SNP/Green political parties themselves. Showing it up for what it actually is. However I reckon they are quite good at covering themselves; the current police investigation over the finances seems to be proving this and is going nowhere at the moment. And now our ex dear great leader is planning to write a book for 2025 about all her "achievements". I despair.
