Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Kucinghitam · 17/05/2023 08:08

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

We're taking this down to look behind the scenes. Thanks for all the reports.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 04/07/2023 20:55

Another guilt by association thread has arrived. We do seem to have a lot of them lately…..

StephanieSuperpowers · 04/07/2023 20:59

Oh well, they'll wear themselves out eventually. At some point, they're going to have to accept that we are talking about this, they can't stop us and if they want to convince anyone of their argument they're going to have to make a proper one.

StephanieSuperpowers · 04/07/2023 21:03

Oh, I've seen it now. Disregard my wittering there, completely irrelevant.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/07/2023 21:06

clue?

StephanieSuperpowers · 04/07/2023 21:10

I thought it was going to be another "mumsnet please put fwr in special measures" thread, but it's about gender critical men and whether it becomes us to be associated with possible misogyny.

I haven't commented because I kind of agree with everyone. And I mainly think that we're all individually responsible for what we say.

MavisMcMinty · 04/07/2023 21:11

Gonna guess this one, Dean.

Lots who won’t watch it because she’s evil, some who wanted to watch it but were put off by Kelly’s homophobic introduction, and of course the constant accusation that anyone agreeing with Kelly on this one single solitary issue must be a full-blown Nazi.

MavisMcMinty · 04/07/2023 21:11

Oh! Hadn’t seen that one!

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 21:16

IcakethereforeIam · 04/07/2023 14:56

Was that the thread started by someone who wanted participants in a study? If it was that might be why, I think there's a process and a special board for those requests. Has it been moved or zapped?

Yeah she didn't follow proper mumsnet rules for those sorts of posts

Waitwhat23 · 04/07/2023 21:22

I saw the thread with pronouns in the title and got my usual foreboding feeling. I've given up even reading those - I'm convinced a klaxon goes off somewhere.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 04/07/2023 21:24

so was that started elsewhere, loaded up with dodgy material and then moved to FSG so that FSG gets blamed for the content? Because if so that seems deliberate, cynical and really wrong.

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 21:33

God just been on that thread. What the fuck.

Have all the don't you dare click on that right wing link posters all been released from somewhere on the same day?

Britinme · 04/07/2023 21:36

I read the first couple of pages of that thread and was interested to see posters who we don't usually see on FWR and who have never heard of Megyn Kelly saying things to the effect of "well I might not agree with her stance on other issues but I like it on this one." If it's a thread to make all of us look like Nazis it may have backfired.

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 21:38

I think the first out the gate posters over played their hand somewhat!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/07/2023 23:24

I've reached the stage where my automatic reacrion to that is 'Only 9?'

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 23:57

All there is that! They are being really shifty about the offences these officers did

MavisMcMinty · 05/07/2023 00:11

[Name], 47, was sacked and barred from policing after a disciplinary hearing found he distributed and smoked cannabis, hired and had sex with a prostitute and covertly recorded women police officers, force staff and members of the public without their consent for his own sexual gratification over a seven-year period.

Jesus. I would HATE to think I’d been secretly filmed. For any reason, never mind “for his own sexual gratification”. Are men like this naturally drawn to the police force, or does the force make them into power-crazed sex offenders?

funnelfan · 05/07/2023 00:21

That’s my local police force. The same one that didn’t really put any effort into investigating multiple reports of a young man committing acts of gross indecency in the Hull area. The same man went on to abduct and murder Libby Squire in 2019.

What happened to Sarah Everard two years later had many echoes of what happened to Libby in that if the police had taken seriously the escalating behaviour of the perpetrators, those two women would both be alive.

MavisMcMinty · 05/07/2023 00:30

Sarah Everard makes me so sad. To breach someone’s trust in that way, to use her natural instinct to obey the nice policeman, makes what he did even worse.

Yes @DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry , I can contrast the graciousness and patience of the posters I encountered who must have had that conversation again and again, with the unhelpful “educate yourself” response we were getting last night. I can totally understand why it is soul destroying to keep having that kind of conversation, but I’d say if you can’t face doing it that day, just report the offending post if it doesn’t bear leaving up.

although I tend to agree with Alisondonut that I prefer to let problematic posts stay up and leave it to other posters to respond and let the reader decide for themselves based in the strength of rationale.

Your theory on the root problem is very interesting and could be a thread of it’s own!

An ethnic woman refusing to serve you with information is 'unhelpful'? Only if you have a colonial mindset.
