It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

Shame they left before the finale though

Which he could well have done if this Karen’s partner hadn’t been outside and filmed the incident. From the body language I think the manager thought she was on her own and he would get to brag about forcing ‘Karen’ to leave without a refund.

Things took a more physically violent turn when he spotted her partner and the film rolling.

An interesting perspective - I do believe he wouldn't have spoken/behaved towards her in the way that he did if her husband had been standing next to her.

I think a lot of sympathetic viewers think/know the same thing on some level which is why they think it was a set-up or a gotcha situation, like he was tricked into being rude and abusive.

Katherine1985 · 12/05/2023 15:52

@howdoesatoastermaketoast yes it was such a ‘gotcha’ moment when the manager realised it was being filmed.

Up to then his chief witness (should Starbucks investigate a later complaint) was a fellow trans subordinate colleague.

Fladdermus · 12/05/2023 16:43

Because men are never aggressive and violent unless there's a woman winding them up to be.

Didn't someone say there were instore cameras? I think it may have been said in the DM article. But then the MOP filming was an independent witness, as far as anyone knew at the tme.

Yes there was cctv but maybe the manager didn’t have much to fear in terms of Starbucks doing an internal investigation after a customer complaint. He was dealing with transphobia as he saw it and Starbucks has a very trans friendly hiring policy + benefits

Katherine1985 · 12/05/2023 17:52

But due to the phone footage and physical violence it became a police matter and all the footage will be examined

BezMills · 12/05/2023 18:03

Yeah it's a shame the person had a big temper tantrum, and now they has to deal with the consequences of they actions. Oh dear what a pity never mind.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 12/05/2023 18:34

"Yes there was cctv but maybe the manager didn’t have much to fear..."

yes I think that that's the case, the realisation that it would not look could on camera is visible on hos face

Igmum · 12/05/2023 18:48

It must have been a dreadful experience for poor Vanessa - and well done her for standing up for herself - but, on the bright side, can you imagine what would have happened if this had taken place only a few years ago? A George Cross for the manager, the gulags for Vanessa and all dissent silenced. Welcome that sunlight

P.S. Late to the party I know but I have spats! (DD was in a school production of Bugsy). Can I join the Mumsnet Mafia? (Hopeful face)

Yesss to the sunlight @Igmum that’s what I’ve been thinking during this thread.

Hopefully someone else can answer about the Mumsnet Mafia but I’m sure you’ll be admitted. You’re one step ahead of me I haven’t got spats 😂

GailBlancheViola · 12/05/2023 19:38

If you've already got the spats you are a shoe-in @Igmum .

like he was tricked into being rude and abusive.

Unlikely. But, even if he was, the violent reaction is the problem here, not the behaviour of calling a female person a lady that triggered him. If you get offended by someone's old-fashioned politeness, customer service really is not the job for you.

Also, the "it was a setup" conspiracy theory is predicated on a lot of assumptions rooted in narcissism and deluded thinking.

  • The delusion that the terven witch coven somehow knew (how!? witchcraft? surveillance?) that two trans people worked at that branch...
  • ...and the delusion that said terven witch coven is prescient enough to know that both trans staff would both be rotaed on to work at that time and date... (crystal ball or tarot cards, I wonder?)
  • ...and the delusion, without any supporting evidence, that said terven witch coven sets up trans people to get them fired...
  • ... and the narcissism to believe that a Starbucks worker is important enough to be the target of a terven witch coven setup...
  • ...and the delusion to believe that the woman is a terven witch with the magic ability to read trans people's minds enough to know that "lady" is the secret power word that will send an adult man into a violent toddler tantrum.
Or they could accept that an ordinary couple went into a coffee shop to buy coffee and were treated shockingly badly.

Do we need a part two thread for this?

the narcissism to believe that a Starbucks worker is important enough to be the target of a terven witch coven setup

If there was a terven witch coven who could get trans people fired, they'd surely go for high-value targets like the Stonewall board and trans academics and trans lawyers, not coffee making staff.

Yes to new thread and all the other points on your brilliant post.

He was already being rude, abusive, and intimidating. Then the more aggressive physical stuff started when he saw someone filming on their phone.

It’s hard to see how that could have been set up by the ‘terven witch coven’ (love it), visiting on a ferry trip from Cowes 😂

Of course you can!

We are a jolly bunch and largely concentrate on brewing out own Bathtub Gin (and drinking it) and Going To The Mattresses (to sleep it off).

Or that any of them are - honestly, we couldn't care less about them except they present a threat to safe-guarding when they insist on entering women-only spaces.

Trans-people everywhere - WE DON'T CARE HOW YOU DRESS OR WHAT YOU CALL YOURSELVES.

That's YOUR business - but when you try to force us to:
a) use your pronouns,
b) let you into single-sex spaces
c) put up with your threats and violence, both verbal and physical or
d( tell the lesbians among us that they must have sex with men when they call themselves "women" . . .
Well - then you make it into OUR business.

Just wallow in your tedious self-obsession without impacting on women and children (we know you don't DARE impact on men) and we'll call it quits. You aren't nearly as interesting and original as you seem to think you are.

What gets to me is that "look what you made me do" seems to be viewed by TRAs as a completely acceptable excuse for violence. When did we start all this moral relativism about hurting people?

Men do the same. The only difference between MRAs and TRAs is that when we say that using "look what you made me do" to excuse violence is part of male pattern abuse, the MRAs call us misandrist but the TRAs call us transphobic.

It isn't a societal thing, it's a small group amplified on social media to the point and frequency where it seems like a lot of people - but the whole inability to take responsibility for actions, to blame everything on someone else's failure to keep you happy, and 'making you' have to get abusive and violent?

It's a behaviour seen in children with difficulties, and adults of the kind that Lundy Bancroft writes books about. What we have is that a group of them have social media to prop each other up and reassure each other that it's normal and acceptable as opposed to entirely dysfunctional, symptomatic of distorted thinking, and can, as in this case, lead to you being arrested.

GailBlancheViola · 13/05/2023 09:04

They've been allowed to get away with their behaviour for so long they believed they were untouchable, reality is biting back.
