Eddie Izzard interview - one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read

Uses she/her throughout, ‘one woman show’ etc etc - calling anyone who disagrees that TWAW ‘fascists’.

Every time I think I’m inured to this rubbish I read or see something that makes me despair. What a pathetic, preening liar he is.

‘I’m going for it like crazy’: Eddie Izzard on her one-woman, 19-role Great Expectations

After 30 years, the standup star is now finally winning acting plaudits, for a ‘tour de force’ take on Dickens with sharper punchlines – and Hamlet is next

The fact that someone has a different opinion from you does not make them stupid.

I’ve found the extract from Eddie’s memoir. Eddie didn’t actually chase the girls away, my mistake. The girls followed her for a while shouting, and when she turned around and shouted back, they ran away.

I think the way Eddie frames the incident is very interesting, though. Eddie just wanted privacy and didn’t expect to find the girls there. They were smoking and probably skiving. It almost sounds as though they were the interlopers.

I remember listening to that incident when Radio 4 serialised it. IIRC Izzard himself was the reader.

And I remember thinking at the time 'I very much doubt this incident happened quite like that'.

Teenage girls were interlopers, in the women's toilet? Or - the middle aged male was the interloper?

The Guardian's tweet is not getting the respect I expected, tbh.

NotTerfNorCis · 26/04/2023 22:25

It says in the first paragraph that Izzard is gender fluid, so why is the article so insistent on calling h** a woman? That's probably some kind of phobic.

Ha ha ha ha, oh my goodness, laughed out loud at the tweet responses and scared the dog!!

And "Eddie just wanted privacy and didn’t expect to find the girls there." What you say?? In a women's toilet Eddie was surprised by all the females? Really?

That's some kinda special victim blaming there, Catten. Wow.

The fact that someone has a different opinion from you does not make them stupid.

He’s not stupid because I disagree with him.

He’s stupid because he’s stupid.

Backstreets · 26/04/2023 22:36

He's an interesting case. Was never quite my cup of tea even though I was a massive comedy fan back in the day (he always came across massively self satisfied and I preferred the introverted neurotics), but I respected his "I'm a bloke and I'll wear what I want thanks" schtick. There was something about it which rang authentic and subversive, and a little melancholy, too. Even though he claimed to be having a laugh he was very visibly alone in his space, not part of a scene that all dressed like that, which I felt like must have taken a lot of guts.

But what seemed brave, genuine and human when he did it very consciously trying to increase the space in which to be a man, becomes power mad, delusional and deeply unlikeable when he tries to falsely move the boundaries of what it means to be a woman.

Gives a while new dimension to "mad cat lady"

Floisme · 26/04/2023 22:41

I think the Guardian's story is sadder than Izzard's. At least Eddie will always have the Death Star Canteen.

KalimbaMoon · 26/04/2023 22:42

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many she/her pronouns shoehorned into an article before, it feels like The Guardian is gaslighting its readers and thumbing its nose at GC feminists.

Does Eddie really need that much validation now, after wearing dresses and make-up for years without making a song and dance about it?

Didn’t he recently say he was ok with he/him pronouns anyway despite being in ‘girl mode’? The Guardian has really lost the plot.

Tabitha005 · 26/04/2023 22:50

I'm sure Eddie has garnered legions of brand-new fans and followers of late which, let's face it, is the entire point. Narcissistic show-offs don't stop being narcissistic show-offs just because they're ageing, they have to do ever-more outrageously narcissistic show-off things to remain, in their own heads at least, just as important as they've ever been.

I suppose the only surprise, for me as a one-time enjoyer of his comedy output, is that Eddie Izzard is actually quite boringly unimaginative, isn't being 'outrageous', and has clearly run right out of ideas as to how to remain creatively relevant. He's no more 'trans' than I'm an Olympic-class cross-country skier or the Duchess of Devonshire - he's desperately trying to stay 'famous' because being anything less than continually being noticed and commented upon for the way he looks or the things he says is, for people like him, worse than anything else he can imagine.

To be honest , it is mental illness. And I’m sorry for him.

This is very well put.

AngelinaFibres · 26/04/2023 22:53

Presumably being a bog standard gay man just isn't shocking and different anymore so these attention seeking types have to crank it up a bit. They aren't just gay . Oh no far too mainstream. Now they're gender fluid, non binary she/ he/ they/ them/xi/ xim. On Monday I'm Suzy and wear a dress. On Tuesday I'm Eddie just to keep you on your toes ( and give myself the opportunity to be offended when you use the wrong pronouns because, although I was she yesterday today I am they).Absolute bullshit

SweetSakura · 26/04/2023 22:54

Beautifully summarised

To be honest , it is mental illness. And I’m sorry for him.

Mental illness , or opportunistic bandwagon riding? Or some combination thereof?

Either way , the guardian giving such credence to this nonsense is a horrible assault on women's rights and women's spaces

CurlewKate · 26/04/2023 22:09

"If SuzyEddie were an actual 61 year old woman I very much doubt that that would be their choice of hairstyle, makeup and nails."
If she was an actual 61 year old woman she wouldn't be getting the attention or the gigs.

Fair point

He goes into women's single sex spaces. I couldn't give a shiny shit about him or what causes him to pretend to be in girl mode whenever his need for validation needs a boost

To be clear, I’m not agreeing with Eddie’s framing of the girls as interlopers. But I thought it was revealing.

Also just here to requote this fantastic summary:

So Izzard was surprised to see some girls in a female toilet. That takes some doing, and even more believing.
