Eddie Izzard interview - one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read

Uses she/her throughout, ‘one woman show’ etc etc - calling anyone who disagrees that TWAW ‘fascists’.

Every time I think I’m inured to this rubbish I read or see something that makes me despair. What a pathetic, preening liar he is.

‘I’m going for it like crazy’: Eddie Izzard on her one-woman, 19-role Great Expectations

After 30 years, the standup star is now finally winning acting plaudits, for a ‘tour de force’ take on Dickens with sharper punchlines – and Hamlet is next

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many she/her pronouns shoehorned into an article before, it feels like The Guardian is gaslighting its readers and thumbing its nose at GC feminists.

Yes I said the same, Kalimba, it reads as if it was a deliberate choice to stress it so repeatedly. It's jarring and distracting, an illusory truth.

Another poster mentioned this and it's a fair point - if Izzard repeatedly claims gender fluidity, why the clamour to humour this harmful pretence? Anyone with eyes can see that's no she/her.

Which you would think, in fact anyone with a brain would think, if you are hopeful of getting the general public to accept compelled language and thought and abandonment of their rights etc, this is not exactly helpful to the cause.

Because when you ram things up people's nose like this, they tend to just get fed up with you quicker.

But the masks are dropping in all directions and this is fast shifting to two polarised positions of entrenched extremism and the rest of the country.

I’m GC, but yes, this thread is rather personal and spiteful.

Some clearly don’t like the style of the article, but I don’t think Eddie is doing anything wrong here. If she wants to perform her own play or stand as a PPC for Labour, why shouldn’t she?

I have read Eddie’s account of the incident many years ago, where she was challenged in a women’s public toilet by some teenage girls and chased them off. I don’t think that Eddie was in the right there, but I know some would argue that Eddie was legally entitled to use the Ladies without harassment.

Well they would argue wrong. Totally unacceptable.

AngelinaFibres · 27/04/2023 08:26

A.man should never ever be entitled to use a women's toilet. Ever.

@AnythingToSay not sure about @PhoenixIsFlying but yes Suzy identifies as the same sex as my Mum. I don’t have a problem with that. More power to her, I’m sure she has struggled at times over the years with her identity due to the constraints of our society. She seems confident and driven.

Honestly? how can you think your mum and Eddie are in any way the same sex?

Eddie slips from girl mode to boy mode (his choice of words by the way) by taking off his high heels!

What about Eddie indicates to you that he's a woman? That that is his true authentic self? (Unless he's up for a male role then suddenly he had no issue slipping back into boy mode).

Because all I'min seeing is a man who looks like a man, sounds like a man, and acts like a very entitled man, a man who gives no fucks to the distress he causes actual women. and

That man is never and will never be a woman.

I don’t click on Guardian links, I don’t want to give them the traffic

I’m the same. It’s heartbreaking. The Guardian used to be my bible, long ago. It’s a real loss.

literalviolence · 27/04/2023 08:42

PhoenixIsFlying · 26/04/2023 23:59

Wow. So much hatred so much anger. Who cares what gender he sees himself as. And mentioning some toilet incident from years ago when some teenage girls were goading him is really clutching at straws. Even someone likening him to Gary Glitter. Oooh we really reach the bottom of the barrel.

What a horrible misogynistic comment. A man in a ladies loo is intimidating and boundary crossing. Standing up to a man like this is not goading him it's protecting their rights. Some people will blame women for anything and protect any sort of man. Disgusting.

BishyBarnyBee · 27/04/2023 08:42

I can't see any mention of either fascists or TWAW in that article.

Fascists is in the first quote, about 2 paragraphs in.

MagpiePi · 27/04/2023 08:54

he'll feel they've won once trans is basically boring. When people don't bat an eyelid.

If men carry on going around dressed like that, never mind bullying their way into women's spaces and being violent to anyone who objects, while crying about being the most marginalised and oppressed people in society, then people are going to carry on batting their bloody eyelids.

He's making a right show of himself.

What sex is your mum?
In fact what is a mum?
How do you know what sex your mum is if a man can identify as the same?
You sound horribly confused.
Do you understand that there are men and women?
Do you think that biologically a man can actually be a woman?

Mermaidparades · 27/04/2023 08:56

@Boiledbeetle Suzy has dressed and behaved in a similar way since I first became aware of her, in the 1990s. So although it really isn’t any of my business I don’t believe she’s ‘ just going through a phase’ Suzy may not look and sound like you and I, but I’m sure she wishes she was able to. I don’t think it’s helpful to comment further on that.

“Her”

congratulations, you’ve now mastered double think and can speak as if you can’t see what’s in front of you

go you!

Fascists is in the first quote, about 2 paragraphs in.

New Fascism. Referring to a political movement. Not calling anyone who disagrees with TWAW a fascist.

I think this is important. It's possible to not think TWAW and yet think trans people have the right to exist without being mocked for their appearance or existence.

Keepthetowel · 27/04/2023 09:01

This “comedian “ is reinforcing the gender stereotypes that women have been trying to overcome for centuries. Sleazy can wear whatever he wants but is still male.

To say that wearing woman face and using women’s sex based facilities makes you into a woman, is deeply offensive and damaging to women’s safety and rights.

The looking and sounding is no problem. The stomping into women's spaces and not giving a fuck about the impact on the women in there is the problem. That's what we're discussing.

Mermaidparades · 27/04/2023 09:10

@literalviolence thank you, yes I’m aware of the topic for discussion. I disagree with your perception of what Suzy is doing. I don’t think she’s stomping and not giving a fuck. I actually think she’s putting herself out there in the public eye, knowing that some folks will react with anger or whatever. I think she’s brave. I think Suzy is shining a light for all the younger people in the same boat as her, people who feel like they don’t belong because of their gender identities.

Who benefits from you not feeling able to say ‘that’s a man and he’s not the same sex as my mum’?

it sure ain’t you, OR your mum

Mermaidparades · 27/04/2023 09:13

@BernardBlacksMolluscs I’m a polite and respectful person, I will always try my best to use preferred names and pronouns.

Whatthechicken · 27/04/2023 09:13

If he was clutching a Harlen Coben hardback, I guess he’s got a new gig coming up….I guess that will be a male role.

Keepthetowel · 27/04/2023 09:14

And this is someone the Central Labour Party thinks is appropriate to stand for MP. Fortunately for Sheffield the local party didn’t agree. I almost wish Eddie had got in, it would show, the Labour Party up for misogynists it is. I bet the women MPs wouldn’t take kindly to Eddie in their sex based facilities.

Mermaidparades · 27/04/2023 09:18

@BernardBlacksMolluscs who benefits? The person who doesn’t identify with their body, in this case, Suzy. I can’t imagine how awful it would be to feel such disconnect, and instead of being met with empathy and compassion she is being mocked and derided.

You’d rather be polite than accurate?

even when someone is doing something disrespectful or that impinges on the rights of others?

doe that not feel like cowardice to you?

We built an environment where women can’t say ‘there’s a man in the hospital bed next to me!’ Or ‘I’m imprisoned with a man, this can’t be right!’

your ‘polite respectfulness’ paves that path

how about having some compassion for women?
