Link to video inside! 11 minutes covering the parents protest in Swords Co Dublin today. Protesting against the proposed sex education in primary schools. There was a small counter protest who had a very loud alarm trying to drown out the poor parents.

Watch the video, very encouraging!

But the book talks just as much, more, about all the other ways you might meet people (a music group for people who play wind instruments anyone?) and about dating as it does about random sex.

1Week · 08/04/2023 00:36

Well nobody's giving out about teens joining a music group are they!!

My point is it's not all about random sex hookups.

My point is it's not all about random sex hookups.

And everyone else's point is that books even somewhat about "random sex hookups" should not be recommended to children.

Bláthannabuí · 08/04/2023 00:48

@Genesis1v27 absolutely. The schools & libraries got it very wrong. It's been removed. I'd imagine there will need to be an internal investigation as to how this inappropriate book "slipped through the net" so to speak & parents will be given an explanation as to how it happened. It absolutely is a safeguarding issue.

@Genesis1v27 yes, let's just pretend young people don't have sex!

Bláthannabuí · 08/04/2023 00:50

Edited :removed from school lists. Many secondary schools have extensive libraries it would be interesting to know if it was stocked there too.
Hopefully the dad & mum in the video press hard for an explanation to rolled out to parents as it is very worrying & concerning.

They are not going to be the saviours you think they are. I hope you or someone you love are not a member of whatever community they next go after.

Flounder2022 · 08/04/2023 00:16

And the teacher doesn't check more than the cover to ensure it covers what they think the student needs support with? They just randomly pick a book based on its name and what, a couple of lines of info on it?

I should think the teacher will trust recommendations coming from the likes of CBI and HSE?

Bláthannabuí · 08/04/2023 00:59

@Flounder2022 can we have a bit of posivity please. Those parents did a really good job in exposing the book & getting it removed. They are parents & like us they want to protect them & their futures.

Don't conflate the LGBTQ community with the promotion of sexually explicit materials to minors.

Flounder2022 · 08/04/2023 01:06

@1week, sorry I don't understand what you mean?

Lavenderlemongrass · 08/04/2023 01:10

Flounder2022 · 07/04/2023 23:45

Of course most people don't agree with that. Similarly most people don't think young people using drugs is great either. But young people do. And if they are going to (when has prohibition or 'just say no' ever worked) then the least we should ensure is that they are informed of the risks and then if they make an informed decision to still do it they know how to mitigate those risks.

Yes, I think people would like their children to be informed of the risks appropriately, but that's quite different from giving explicit instruction on anal or oral sex or talking about faecal perversions or how to hook up for random sex, isn’t it? Like this book does in parts.

I'm not quite sure what your issue is @Flounder2022. You have agreed that the recommended age range for the book was too large, so you obviously don't think it suitable for younger teens...isn't that the same or similar to the point everyone else is making too?

Flounder2022 · 08/04/2023 01:13

I will never have a positive thing to say about them. I don't agree with them on this or one single other thing they claim to stand for.

I am not a Covid denier
I am not anti vax
I do not support his views on refugee or immigration
I abide his throwing 'groomer' about left right and centre

For a start!

Lavenderlemongrass · 08/04/2023 01:15

But you do think this book isn't suitable for younger teens @Flounder2022?

1Week · 08/04/2023 01:17

I prefer to take things issue by issue, as a general rule. Otherwise we end up with tribalism.

Lavenderlemongrass · 08/04/2023 01:17

@Flounder2022 Do all of the groups who objected at the library (there were at least three involved iirc) stand for all of those things you've listed do you know?

Flounder2022 · 08/04/2023 01:18

@Lavenderlemongrass my issue is the misrepresentation, the suggestion that this book is inappropriate for ANY young adult, especially by people who haven't read it, and the dogged refusal to consider that a group of people who were only last month marching on accommodation where refugees were living might in any way have an ulterior motive.

Link3 · 08/04/2023 01:18

Flounder2022 · 08/04/2023 00:50

@Genesis1v27 yes, let's just pretend young people don't have sex!

Or let's acknowledge that they do and concentrate on teaching them how to do so safely and respectfully. This is an embarrassing safeguarding fail, whoever is responsible . Our gay kids deserve better.

Datun · 08/04/2023 01:23

Most people don't agree that encouraging teens to go for sex hook ups with randoms off the Internet is a good idea.

Indeed. The sexually explicit nature of Juno Dawson's books have been the subject of many a thread.

The last time was about what fun it is for teens to hook up with 'out of town commuters'.

Bláthannabuí · 08/04/2023 01:23

@Flounder2022 fair enough. You are entitled to your opinion & I am entitled to mine. Flounder are you a parent?
I have never heard of either of the parents in the video until yesterday. However I have been following the Gript since Barbie Kardashian as RTÉ just simply aren't reporting what's going down.
The dad & the mum were obviously invested, concerned parents who uncovered this scandal & got the offending book removed. I couldn't care less about his other views but they did a fantastic job yesterday & many people agree. 1,000 shares & over 500 comments on Gript. A job well done I say. I hope he's not a one trick pony & I do hope he'll do more exposes on our education system. That's my opinion.

Lawyers for Justice - Anti lockdown, Anti mask, anti migrant

Irish Education Alliance - anti vax, Anti mask

Just as a start

I don't think it's been widely suggested that it's not suitable for any young adult? At the very least there are mixed views on that and it will depend on the individual teen and parent.
What parents do seem to be unanimous on is that it's not generally suitable for younger teens. It shoudn't have been recommended at Junior Cycle level and shouldn't have been made available to kids as young as 13 in libraries.

I guess that is where we differ.

I am very passionate about breastfeeding. If the world most passionate breastfeeding advocate was a racist, homophobic, Covid denier I would never platform them or share their views with the world.

1Week · 08/04/2023 01:31

No, "banning" it for everyone has not been on anyone's agenda. Its more like suggesting films and video games should be age restricted. Common sense
