Link to video inside! 11 minutes covering the parents protest in Swords Co Dublin today. Protesting against the proposed sex education in primary schools. There was a small counter protest who had a very loud alarm trying to drown out the poor parents.

Watch the video, very encouraging!

Yes because RTÉ are reporting nothing so I will believe that Dad who was absolutely horrified by what he read.
Why are you attacking him & insulting him. He's an outraged dad of two little girls & the nation are applauding him for calling out the grooming for what it is. We can all see the transology for itself. I really hope that dad starts on the women's rights & the GRA next.

I don't know why you think you can argue this @Flounder2022 . The author of the book herself said it is not suitable for children & it was being peddled to 12 year olds.

Would it be helpful for your participation in the debate to read the book? could you see how someone could in any way think that would be a reasonable way to form an opinion and verify the contents of the book?

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 21:36

@Wonderingiforifnot if you watch the video the outraged dad said there was anal fisting in the book. I'm taking his word for it, he was horrified by the contents. His reaction, the mothers & the grandmother's is all I need know.
My dc's class WhatsApp group were horrified at the video, another mum shared it. We have muslims
& religious Eastern Europeans in all the classes. The anal fisting shocked us all & it came straight from the dad's mouth.

Yes straight from his mouth, not straight from the book. That's the point. Jesus, it's actually mind blowing at this point, your digging in on this.

When you read the book, as you say you will, are you going to come back and admit you were wrong and you fell for a bunch of lies?

QueenMeabh on twitter has posted a photo of page 186 of the book. It refers to 'what you fancy' on shoving a few fingers or a whole hand inside some orifice or other.

Above tweeter has also tweeted a page showing the information on Apps.

If you're that horny that you want to do a sex meet, meet the trick for a drink in a public place first .

That'd be after you've sent them your photo, age, weight and height. Mind it is good that your child/teenager has been reminded that a condom should always be worn.

Who approved that for that to be placed in schools?

Cailleach1 · 07/04/2023 22:21

I'm not sure if twitter links are deleted by Mumsnet. However, here it is.

It was not placed in schools!

Genesis1v27 · 07/04/2023 22:23

Not the Juno Dawson book. The first is by an actual woman. These links are not safe for work.

You lie. Dawson's book "was included in a reading list for Junior Cycle sex education." The author now claims it is not appropriate for children.

Cailleach1 · 07/04/2023 22:34

Thank goodness that the one about shoving entire hand up an orifice wasn't placed (or linked to as a reference or resource) in schools at least. If that is the case.

Were they trying to have these books placed in schools (physically, or as a reference/resource) or the children's sections of library and got pushback?

There is some reference to Dept of Education & Health reading lists for young teens? So a reading list in connection to schools, but not connected to schools?

Crickey, just seen the IT link to the page of a book on fisting and anal sex.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:39

@Cailleach1 thank you so much for posting. I'm so glad I didn't open the link of the book that was put up for me. That's all I need to see. I feel sick to my stomach.
Remind your child /teenager to wear a condom... Child being the word here. And send photos of themselves to strangers... Where is the safeguarding.
@Flounder2022 you just clarified that libraries have placed this book in young adults (12 to 17 years.)

OP posts:
Flounder2022 · 07/04/2023 22:41

@Genesis1v27 it was included in a recommended reading list for teachers and parents.

That is not 'placed in schools' as you claimed.

The review of the list seems appropriate as because of the number of books on it may make it more difficult for parents or teachers to ascertain which are appropriate for the age groups they are dealing with.

So yes, the list was aimed too broadly. That has now been rectified.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:44

@Flounder2022 it was only rectified after parental pushback.

Yes I did. The YA section spans 12 - 17 as you say. If my 12 year old is visiting the library you can be certain I would be ensuring whatever books he chose are appropriate for him. Whether that's related to sex or not. Just like I do when he is online, watching TV or You Tube or picking a movie. We have Netflix for example, he doesn't get free reign there either.

Or are you suggesting all books in the YA selection should only be suitable for 12 year olds, just to be safe

You are, again, being disingenuous (or perhaps stupid). The Dawson book was in a reading list for children, not just "parents and teachers." Parents have been kept in the dark up to now. If something is recommended to schoolchildren by education authorities, it is irrelevant whether it meets your definition of "placed in schools" or not.

Still, good that you agree that these books are not appropriate for children. The question is, why were they pushed on them, and by whom?

1Week · 07/04/2023 22:57

I actually think 12 - 17 is far too broad.
Afaik YA library cards are categorised 12 -14, 15 - 17. And you can only take out a book that matches that. Though I know our local library will let my teen take out a book that too old for him if I'm/dh is there to give permission. That's a small library though and we'd be well known to the staff, hopefully I don't get doxxed and the nice librarian doesn't get fired!!

Flounder2022 · 07/04/2023 22:57

@Genesis1v27 I have seen nothing to suggest these books are being 'pushed' on children nor that they are on any list aimed at children. Have you any links to show this is the case and I will happily acknowledge my error?

Genesis1v27 · 07/04/2023 23:01

@Flounder2022 - you said "it was included in a recommended reading list for teachers and parents." Provide evidence for that first.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 23:01

@Flounder2022 my children are younger however at the age of 12 I would certainly hope my children will be mature & independent enough to choose their own books (without their mammy!) in the library which carefully selects books for the relevant age sections. I am concerned it is still available to children.
For what it's worth the library is on our road, my 9 & 7 year old totter up & down on their own already (no crossing) & I don't plan to start accompanying them when they're 12 as I'm hoping the librarians will have carefully selected books.

I don't disagree at all. A 12yo and 17yo are so far removed from each other. Or at least should be. But surely a much better way to campaign for change would be to advocate for differentiating as you suggest rather than fiull removal for everyone (ie a 17yo, for whom this book is perfectly appropriate) just because it is not appropriate for a 12 yo.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 23:03

@1Week yes that's right, my eldest took out the Hunger Games which was in the young adult section & she had to come home & get me to run up with her to give permission.

So this would likely happen if they tried to take out this book too?
