Just to add this minister is a gay man but as the comments show he has totally ostracised the gay community who are quite rightly very angry..
Some of the comments are hilarious but none support his trans agenda. Delighted!

Again you are struggling with logical inference. I haven't made any statement about biology at all. I'm merely pointing out the massive contradiction of supporting anti-feminist views on an feminist forum. If you want to oppose trans identity off you go and make your argument but don't pretend that right-wing evangelicals who oppose women's rights are a friend of women on a women's forum.

Leo was taught by the Evangelicals not tbe Catholics as far as I am aware, and it's the Irish prositant world view he was taught, colonisation, feeling superior, knowing better, hating Catholics etc.

VaddaABeetch · 01/04/2023 12:55

That’s a lot of words @RubyRoss. They don’t appear to make sense in thd order you put them though.

You’re probably much cleverer than me though.

Well this is refreshing. Normally Purity Spiral posts from “concerned” people are related to KJK, or the American right. It’s refreshing to have one about Ireland! I’m sure the complexities of religion in Ireland will make for an engaging discussion…

Or maybe anyone who’s not a complete muppet knows a man cannot be a woman and Barbie Kardashian shouldn’t be anywhere near women, regardless of one’s religion and it’s ok to agree on that despite so many other differences?

But probably not. Coz purity spiral…

I'm from Ireland and I don't recognise the picture the OP paints at all. The dog whistles the minister refers to are very clear. It's far-right Catholic and Protestant evangelists who are using the trans issue to gain support for their wider agenda opposing the secularisation of schools and the liberalisation of abortion. And some useful idiot politicians think they will score points by pushing cultural war issues

If the OP wants to champion that on a feminist forum maybe this forum should be renamed the anti trans agenda because it's not feminism.

What's your position on Barbie Kardashian? Do you support BK, who has been convicted of very violent crimes against women, and who still has fully intact male physiology, being housed in the women's prison?

What do you think about the fact that if the women prisoners object to the vile verbal abuse they are subjected to from BK and the other transwoman, they are the ones punished, rather than the transwomen?

Leopardprintonsie · 01/04/2023 13:02

@OchonAgusOchonOh I think we have ran @RubyRoss he won't return! Won't explain basic biology when asked!

So as you are now criticising the logic of other posters let's have a look at yours.

Because two religious groups are opposed to the secularisation of schools and liberalisation of abortion, you state that a different group, women on mumsnet, who are pleased he's being told off by the LGB community for claiming they must be force teamed with gender identity, are not feminists.

I realise everything in the entire world revolves around the sun shining on the gender identity fans but sometimes people just care about other groups of people too.

I suspect word salad will result in an argument that Colonists should take Irish women's spaces, send those who don't agree ( to Connachta [ˈkʊn̪ˠəxt̪ˠə] or Cúige Chonnacht [ˌkuːɟə ˈxʊn̪ˠəxt̪ˠ])
and use them as slaves locked in an institution to be service human props for males.

The Catholic Church wasn't involved in Irish prison policy, it was the secular Irish state under Leo.

Deadringer · 01/04/2023 13:07

I am not especially clever so I would be grateful for an explanation of which anti feminist views are being supported on this forum. I have always considered this a pro women place, and only 'anti trans' when the trans agenda clashes with the safety and dignity of women.

Yeah, I was only on page one when I responded.

Ah sure, running/blocking is true to form for TRAs. It's important not to upset the delicate balance of the echo chamber.

Leopardprintonsie · 01/04/2023 13:08

As inconvenient it is, some have been fighting this since 2015 and they have been all over this and they are Catholics. Caroline Farrow is another I know of.

So what of Catholics fight alongside you? We aren't stinky! I had nothing to do with the laundry or Alter boys.

Oh Ruby (or is it Ross on the weekends?), maybe you should take your anti-women rhetoric to Reddit or somewhere else, they love a bit of that.

Here we discuss issues and concerns for women and girls - such as male rapists in women's prisons, men in women's sports, naked men in women's changing rooms etc. If you want to call that anti-trans that's your prerogative, we are used to being shamed for defending women's spaces. Nothing new here.

But it's not going to stop us talking about these issues. And I'll tell you something else, the talk is getting louder, people are no longer whispering. They are openly discussing the harm that is being done. No debate isn't working anymore.

Also, FYI - Abortion is already legal in Ireland, and more and more Educate Together schools are being built. Those ships have already sailed.

TowerStork · 01/04/2023 13:18

FWIW I don't believe BK is a woman. He seems like an incredibly disturbed individual who had latched onto a trend. I believe many young people claiming to be trans have also latched onto a trend. The inability of trans rights activists to acknowledge those as possibilities massively undermines their position and I'd be very surprised if they don't express reservations in private while showing full support in public.

I also believe that trans identity is real and that small group of people need support. I don't especially care what terms are used but distorting common biological and well understood terms is wrong I believe because it disadvantages those who do not understand the language games being played. Medical information should be accessible and for women that's hugely important.

But, frankly, what I see here among anti trans activists is just as ridiculous and off putting as the 'identify as a asexual tree' fringe of the trans rights movement.

And I'll say it one last time: those of you defending the church and supporting those who want to ban abortion have no place in a feminist forum and you are the big gaslighters of all.

Certain people seem to find incomprehensible is that you can agree with people (or groups) on some issues, and not on others. And be ok with that.

It's an inconvenience for those who want to place everyone in a neat little box, labelled 'right wing' or whatever. Most people are more nuanced than that.

I don't agree with many things the Catholic Church believe or have done, and I wouldn't call myself a religious person - but on this we agree. So what.

They don't want Catholics and Feminists to work together, they don't want the English and Irish to work together, they know if they do they will lose.

Any group can agree or disagree with anything.

I don't think religious groups are stinky!

Ross just uses a blanket term of culture war to merge everyone they don't like into a bad people collective and then tell posters they aren't feminist but anti trans as a result of this illogical bullshit.

Well the Irish Times has gone full steam into it, so it's obviously an idea whose time has come and gone.

Steelasprey · 01/04/2023 13:40

Hi Ruby, I’m Irish, living in Ireland, as left-wing and feminist as can be in our little town (campaigned for Repeal and marriage equality, Educate Together for our un-baptised kids, volunteer for inclusive community organisations, and supporting new community members from Ukraine etc.) and I have very serious concern about gender identity ideology and the serious harms it’s practice is doing in our schools, prisons and to our culture. I find it potentially as dogmatic and damaging as the ideology of the Catholic Church once was.
I’m very worried about the impact of gender identity on women and girls - and I’m not alone. There’s a huge sense of fear around this issue for many of my, similarly left-wing, friends who feel they’re going to be labelled bigots for simply asking questions or raising concerns. You can’t dismiss everyone who raises objections as right wing religious nuts. People may be quiet now but it’s a massive issue that will have a massive impact on the way many people will vote.
