When less than a quarter of the governing representatives are female, female issues are relegated to 'everyone' issues and men's issues remain top of the agenda, redardless of what proportion of the male population those issues affect.

Harris has reworded and rephrased LV's comments.. 'the point he was trying to make ... what I took from the comment'... saying 'regardless of gender' several times, 'incarcerated appropriately', 'individual risk assessment' ..

So what does that mean... extra security measures? Several posters on twitter seem to think that the fact that BK is under the permament surveillance of two prison guards means women are safe there so there endeth the argument.

We all heard LV say.. Violent Men should not be incarcerated in Women's prisons.

I despair... where are the voices pushing this open door when people like Harris are hastily shutting it again.

Lostmarblesfinder · 22/03/2023 16:27

Hmmmmm I sent an email to loads of TDs about this well over a year ago. I doubt I left Leo off my list as tainiste at the time. Hmmmm hmmmmm.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 22/03/2023 16:33

I hope you still have it on your system, I am absolutely convinced he was lying when he said he didn't know about it and the more solid evidence the better. Though unless anyone in the gutless media is prepared to report it, who will know?

Paddy O'Gorman has done quite a bit on it. He chanced onto the story when he was interviewing people outside Limerick prison and encountered a woman who had been on the women's wing when 2 transwomen were there. He couldn't believe it and has had a few episodes of his podcast interviewing former women prisoners who experienced it or their relatives.

I listened to Paddy’s podcast on Limerick prison and found it very informative. One of the former women prisoners that he interviewed detailed how the three sex offenders were in cells on the women’s landing and the women were only allowed out to get food (and a little rec time) but were then locked back in their cells afterwards to segregate them from the sex offenders.

She detailed how the sex offenders shouted rude/vulgar things at the women and managed to intimidate and upset the women prisoners even when they were all locked in their cells almost all day long. She described how women used the stairs on the opposite side of the landing to avoid hearing vulgar things the sex offenders shouted at them. She related that the majority of women on the women’s landing were mothers and were horrified about a child abuser being housed on the landing with them. Other women had been sexually abused and were terrified by the shouting and by the fact that the sex offenders had sexually abused women.

She also described how the women were punished with being locked back in their cells for criticising sex offenders being on the women’s landing. She stated the sex offenders got out of their cells more often than the women prisoners.

Paddy spoke to quite a few of the recently released prisoners and their families, he was very good at getting people to talk about upsetting things.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 22/03/2023 16:39

Paddy O'Gorman is a hero. He listens, he lets people tell their own stories, he doesn't editiorialise.

I can't imagine him doing a Micheal Martin eye-roll just because someone suggested a penis shouldn't be able to go wherever its owner wants, regardless.

So did I. I even posted the template on here. No one except Ivana replied and hers was wishy washy.

Annasgirl · 22/03/2023 16:46

But the Irish media are all still TWAW and refuse to report issues like this unlike the UK media (apart from the awful Guardian).

That is more replies than I got but I didn’t email Ivana.

https://www.irishprisons.ie/information-centre/statistics-information/ has some information on women prisoners in Ireland. The page on "Committals classified by offence group" is an eyeopener: From 2014 to 2020 the number of women convicted of sexual offences averages at less than one per year.

In 2021 there were four "women" convicted of sexual offences.

In fact, it seems there may well more men convicted of sexual offences in Irish women's prisons than there are women, the offence being so rare amongst Irish women.

Added to which, Limerick prison has a capacity of 28. On February 1st this year there were 46 women there - all doubled and in some cases tripled up. Taking 2 or possibly 3 of the rooms for men (and trying, apparently, to keep them "separate" seriously compromises conditions for the women who are horrifically overcrowded at the best of times.

Pseudonamed · 22/03/2023 16:47

This was reported at the time. I am not a huge one for news and read about along with that clowns picture and backstory. If I, who has no interest in current affairs at the best of times had come across it theres no way a man who NEEDS to be on his game when it comes to current affairs did not.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 22/03/2023 17:00

I suspect that BK, being an incredibly violent psychopath, would be kept in segregation, whichever jail he is in. But that’s not likely to be true of other male offenders in women’s prisons- there just aren’t the resources.

OhWhatMerryHellIsThis · 22/03/2023 17:20

There are at least two other men who are (or possibly in one case were, I'm not sure if that sentence was completed), by the way. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name names, so I'm putting in the two links

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/courts/criminal-court/woman-jailed-for-assaulting-a-family-friend-who-was-trying-to-break-up-a-fight-1.4498193

https://www.lawsociety.ie/gazette/top-stories/2019/10-october/male-bodied-transgender-inmate-housed-with-women-prisoners

I think there was one more case involving the rape of a child, but that seems to have been hushed up completely, possibly due to the convict involved not being an Irish citizen.

The law society gazette article from 2019 is worth reading, as it lays out the law but also implies that if the conviction was for gender based violence placement in the women's prison should be reconsidered Confused

Woman jailed for assaulting a family friend who was trying to break up a fight

Judge accepted transgender woman Shauna Kavanagh (33) will ‘have difficulty serving time in prison’

Pseudonamed · 22/03/2023 17:26

So BK got 5.5 years, 1 suspended and backdated so he will be out in general society in 3 years?

ArabellaScott · 22/03/2023 18:23

This article has more detail on the Shaun/Shaunah Kavanagh case, currently in women's jail:

'Garda David Redmond said Kavanagh then picked up a number of wine bottles to take with her and then swung one of the bottles at Mr Byrne."The barman said it was like he snapped," Gda Redmond said.

Mr Byrne and customers in the pub, including Denis Heatly, were among a group who pushed Kavanagh out of the pub.CCTV played in court showed Kavanagh throw another bottle at Mr Heatly, who then punched Kavanagh to the ground.Mr Bolger and Mr Coogan came out around this time to get Kavanagh away from the situation and tried to calm her down on the other side of the road but Kavanagh then ran back and started throwing more punches at people outside the pub.

At this point Mr Coogan ran over and tried to stop Kavanagh continuing her attacks but Kavanagh turned around and punched him in the head. The CCTV shows Mr Coogan immediately fall backwards and smashed the back of his head off the ground, where he lay motionless with blood coming out of his ear while Kavanagh continued to brawl with others present. She was later rugby tackled to the ground and held until gardaí arrived.'

'The court heard Mr Coogan had fractures to his left eye socket, right eye socket and the base of his skull as well as a bleed on the brain. He spent eight days in and induced coma in ICU before regaining consciousness. He was discharged three weeks after the attack.'

This man should not be in jail with women.

And:

'Kavanagh had previously been living in London as a woman, but after returning to Dublin was “suppressing her gender”. A psychological report claimed that Kavanagh’s “anger (that night) is likely to have emanated from the frustration about how her life was progressing… including suppressed gender.” At some point after the bar assaults, Kavanagh began identifying as a woman called Shauna, and now has a gender recognition certificate, which was provided to the court. Noctor argued in court that Kavanagh is “vulnerable” and would find prison particularly difficult, referencing international research that “has found transgender women in particular are a vulnerable group in prison”.

Noctor referred to two males currently being held in women’s jails in Ireland, who must be kept separate from the rest of the prison population.

The two males in women’s prisons are:

Barbie Kardashian, who has demonstrated a pattern of extreme physical and sexual violence towards women

An unnamed pedophile, who was convicted of 10 counts of sexual assault and one count of cruelty against a child

Even less, you get a 25% automatic remission as long as you don't commit an offence while inside

Think this is the one you're thinking about, went to a male prison as no GRC. Absolutely no reaction from Irish TRA's about it, surely if TWAW they should have been fighting for a womens prison slot

Transgender child perv back on streets despite being told she would be deported

A transgender prostitute caught with ‘thousands of depraved child abuse images’ is back on Ireland’s streets after being released from prison despite a court being told she would be deported at the end of a three-year sentence.

This needs to go global far & wide. The government won't be long backing down if there is international condemnation. Women's rights in Ireland are being depleted by the minute... The GAA letting trans men (who haven't made any attempt at transitioning play) & UCD having a trans woman give a speech on International Women's Day. What hope do our girls have if this shit isn't stamped out now?

That’s mad, isn’t it? Mind you, the Irish justice system has never been good at punishing violence or sexual assault against women and children. Think back over the years to all the newspaper headlines about crazily lenient sentencing of men by Irish judges.

Mommymoments · 22/03/2023 18:44

ArabellaScott · 21/03/2023 19:31

What we need now is the OTHER media in Ireland pressing him on this. And other politicians.

@ArabellaScott absolutely. Mainstream media in Ireland is state controlled censorship.
The gript are excellent.

Mommymoments · 22/03/2023 18:46

They can shout transphobia all they want. We can't shout woman phobia back at them. They are women haters.

Sentencing for serious criminal offences in Ireland is nuts, you get time off if you come from a good family, you get time off if you come from a bad family. Its pure nonsense and makes a mockery of the whole system.

What gets me about this whole thing is no one is speaking up for the female prison guards. I want to know what they think about this and if they're uncomfortable having to do intimate searches on biological males which is presumably not what you sign up for when you go to work in a womens prison

Mommymoments · 22/03/2023 18:52

TangledUpinBlu · 21/03/2023 21:40

I can't believe we are celebrating this, I mean, it's good news and obviously the law needs to change but how in the ever loving fuck did we get to a place where stating the blindingly fucking obvious "men shouldn't be in women's prisons" even needs to be said, considered, handwrung about??
I'm furious. I'm furious that such stupid people can get into the positions which have made this possible, and I'm even more furious for all the women who have been terrorised and tortured whilst being held captive.
It's evil that this was ever not only allowed to happen but there are people out there sick enough to actively campaign for it and be allowed to get their way at the expense of the dignity and safety of the most vulnerable women.

Roderic etc want to be as woke & progressive as possible to nab a nice big job in Europe when their time comes to an end like that donkey Katherine Zappone.
