I genuinely thought that they'd make an effort to include token women for the first few years in order to prove us bigots wrong!

That would have required self awareness, I guess.

NecessaryScene · 12/01/2023 17:01

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brit_Award_for_British_Female_Solo_Artist

Female solo artists 1977-2022. Interesting bit of history.

Good while it lasted, eh?

Signalbox · 12/01/2023 17:13

Well that was predictable. Perhaps the generation who are pushing for all this crap need to learn for themselves that in reality gender neutral = men/ male. Perhaps then it will dawn on them why these separate categories were set up in the first place and start fighting to protect them.

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2023 17:17

Ah, we have at last got rid of those irritating women's rights. More space for the Special Men! Hooray!

Timestamp · 12/01/2023 17:18

They didn’t even try put up the pretence that in its inaugural year, that this can work for everybody and women won’t lose out- then point to the token woman Absolutely brazen.

I am shocked - the Guardian seems to have noticed and done a transphobic!

www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jan/12/brit-awards-2023-wet-leg-and-harry-styles-lead-male-dominated-nominations

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2023 17:19

'A year after the Brit awards abandoned the gendered categories, the nominations for the replacement artist of the year prize are entirely male, comprising Central Cee, Stormzy, Fred Again, George Ezra and Harry Styles.

The awards ceremony, run by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) did away with the best British male and best female awards in 2022 following criticism that the non-binary pop star Sam Smith would not be eligible for either prize despite their massive commercial success.'

From the Guardian, everyone! The Guardian!

SmartHome · 12/01/2023 17:19

let me guess, men?

How progressive!

Timestamp · 12/01/2023 17:20

I thought it was the first year. But it’s the second year. They must have done all the pretending last year…not worth it this time round

Appalonia · 12/01/2023 17:22

Well, that's not a surprise, we bloody knew this would happen. 'Gender neutral' always prioritise s men. Every single time!

Fenlandia · 12/01/2023 17:23

Fucks sake so predictable. Yet there's probably more female artists in the charts these days than there have been at many times in history. Guess the chaps are just better than the girls!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/01/2023 17:25

Hahahahaha but of course - I wonder of those women so eager to hand over women’s rights & see men as so oppressed might start to join the dots

NotAnotherTaco · 12/01/2023 17:26

Gosh, who would have thought this would happen?

🙄

Yeah, they did for the first year in 2022... Adele (who won) and Little Simz.

So now they've done that inclusive nod, it can be all men, all the time.

Appalonia · 12/01/2023 17:28

And it was just ONE individual, that caused this change. What power they have.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 12/01/2023 17:29

What a fucking surprise.

Timestamp · 12/01/2023 17:29

Good point. If this is what it takes for people to see the light then maybe its needed.

Just feel sorry for the female artists that miss out because their work isn’t valued.

WeWillLookBack · 12/01/2023 17:29

Hope all the handmaidens are really happy now.

Whattaboutit · 12/01/2023 17:30

Absolutely shocking. Struggling to believe they have so little awareness that this can be seen as acceptable. Boycott the Brits!

FOJN · 12/01/2023 17:31

Further evidence that male and female have been appropriated by the gender nutters. Special, non binary Sam Smith is and always will be male so would always have been eligible for inclusion in the male category.

Slow hand clap for Mr Smith, what an utter attention seeking twat.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/01/2023 17:37

It really makes no sense at all, does it. Up to now lots of awards ceremonies have had separate categories for Male and Female performers of various types, so you might have (say) five women on the Female shortlist and five men on the Male shortlist. Now presumably it's five people, who could in theory be male or female, on the one shortlist. So half the number of awards for performance. Given these are the super high profile awards at any ceremony, doesn't that mean they're reducing the PR impact of their own event?

TheMarzipanDildo · 12/01/2023 17:39

I genuinely thought they’d make an effort for a few years at least.

ReunitedThorns · 12/01/2023 17:46

Has Sam Smith been nominated for Best Group? I hear they're quite talented.

Appalonia · 12/01/2023 17:55

I was following the Golden Globes live Twitter thread a few days ago, and wondering how long it will be before the best actor categories are made gender neutral...?
