We don't 'need' to do that. We need to take a look around at the sexism in this industry and go back to having two categories based on sex. The enbies are included in one or other of those categories according to their sexes.

How can they get away with this? Thanks to a previous OP that listed women's history in the Best Group category, I mean why did it take so bloody long for women to win one? Little mix's acceptance speech was wonderful, saying this was for all the female groups that didn't win but should have done!

I think there needs to be a study on this as I swear female music is forgotten quicker!

The depressing thing about all this shite is gender critical women and rad feminists say “if you go ahead with this, the following terrible consequences will happen for women”, we are ignored, then the terrible consequences bloody well happen! I’m having to come to terms with the fact that every achievement feminists have won since the 60s will be destroyed, and we will have to wait for a new cohort of young feminists to build everything up again.

If you want to see how little women are represented in films and TV put on Netflix (or any other streaming service) and scroll through. The vast majority of actors featured to promote programmes are men and it's rare to see a show with more than one woman on the pictures.

This is a very basic study. There was a bit more research 2 years ago when everyone was patting themselves on the back for the things looking like they were improving, until Sam Smith threw a strop and everyone rolled over.

That's true and I agree there's little point in complaining Arabella. I guess I was hoping young women might take note of what happened when the 'gender neutral' Booker prize announced an all male shortlist in 1991 - i.e. women got mad and then got busy and started their own award. Admittedly that might mean having to define themselves, not to mention listening to middle aged women, so I'm afraid I won't be holding my breath.

Not at all. I think we have some fantastic female artists, but i don't think any of them have had as good a year as Central Cee, Stormzy, Fred Again, George Ezra and Harry Styles.

If next year the five nominated artists are all female (and great if they area) - will we be having a similar debate that we should have at least one male artist in the line up?

Women’s categories exist precisely so that women aren’t continuously overlooked/excluded in a male-dominated world, whether that be in Arts, Sports, Academic Scholarships whatever.

Permanently having two sexed categories has the reasonable side effect of preventing an over-correction and avoids the new issue coming up in some sports (eg marathon running) where both the men’s and non-binary categories have male-sexed winners leaving ‘non-binary afab people’ out in the cold.

Just accepting that ‘these 5 men were better than ALL the women this year’ would fuck women RIGHT OVER, imagine a sports world that looked like that?
