Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Gutted that someone I thought might be GC isn't

NC for this.

In my dept at work, we NEVER discuss any of this, but we do talk a lot about books. The other week a young woke colleague brought in a book by someone called Juno Dawson and said something like "it's like a trans Harry Potter, she's really having a go at JKR" in an approving tone. I didn't comment.

Now, another colleague, I've always had my suspicions might be GC, as she's a bit older, very sound of judgement imo and even though we never discuss it, I have always suspected/hoped. Then yesterday she said something on her fb like "I've just finished the Ink Black Heart, she might have some dodgy opinions but wow, the woman cAn write"

And I just feel gutted. I'm tempted to comment (about the book, which I have read, but also about how much I love JKR) but wonder if that will just cause a world of pain for me.

We had some AWFUL training a few months ago (I posted on here at the time but then got it deleted as I was worried it was outing) - but it was the usual stuff- sex assigned at birth, promoted mermaids, the woman even had a link to binders on her own webpage. I complained about it to my boss, and was taken seriously to be fair, but I was gobsmacked that no one else to my knowledge seemed to have an issue with it and just nodded along.

I was listening to an interview between Louise Perry and Julie Bindel the other day where Perry said it was clear, because of recent developments, that the GC side has "won" this "war" but it just doesn't feel that way for me.

I just feel gutted and depressed about it. Just wanting to vent really.

I am going to stop coming on this board and stick to AIBU - these threads always go the same way, when anyone tries to express a different view.

Just to defend myself a little - not sure why I always end up having to on here even when I have expressed very moderate views - I am not centring men over women . The trans people I know IRL were actually born biologically female and are transitioning to male. They aren’t Olympic swimmers, they aren’t desperate to get into men’s toilets or invade female only spaces. They are just nice people living their lives on their own terms. And I am so glad they have the freedom to do so - because there are so many countries where they would not be legally allowed to do so.

pandemuertos · 13/11/2022 08:27

Actually Iran has one of the highest rates of sex re-assignment surgery anywhere as it is better to be trans than to be gay.

www.economist.com/middle-east-and-africa/2019/04/04/why-iran-is-a-hub-for-sex-reassignment-surgery

Also, gender is not a protected characteristic, nor is gender identity. Gender reassignment is, and sex is.

Are you sure she's a believer? Or is she as GC as you, but nervous of the backlash? Is that little clause a token gesture to avoid attack by the anti-blasphemy policers?

I agree with this.

Freespirit no, gender isn’t a protected characteristic. And how could it be?

Yes it is www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/discrimination/check-if-youre-protected-from-discrimination/gender-reassignment-discrimination/

pandemuertos · 13/11/2022 08:28

@Freespirit42 that is gender reassignment not gender, or gender identity.

bless don’t stop commenting that’s why the gender criticals think they are winning m they really are not. It’s why republicans didn’t do that well more youth are on the right side, lgb alliance pictures very old people it’s gonna die off soon.

@Freespirit42 that is gender reassignment not gender, or gender identity.

Reassignment doesn’t mean actual operation it means aligning with being trans for your info

pandemuertos · 13/11/2022 08:30

@Freespirit42 ah age seems to be another protected characteristic which you don't respect!

"aligning with being trans" means nothing in legal terms.

@Freespirit42 ah age seems to be another protected characteristic which you don't respect!

Of course but as I say certain beliefs seem to be very much an age related thing as the picture showed.
ps you r wrong You have the protected characteristic of gender reassignment if you:

want to reassign your sex from your birth sex to your preferred sex
do this by changing physical or other characteristics
Gender reassignment is a personal process rather than a medical one. You don't have to undergo medical treatment or be under medical supervision to be protected under the Equality Act as a transgender person.

Barnybrown · 13/11/2022 08:32

I cannot make sense of you reply at all - no idea what you mean. But you could stop being so rude and patronising - “bless”.

None of this means you have to be considered as the opposite sex though. It just means, for example, you cannot lose your job because of it

waterwitch · 13/11/2022 08:35

Freespirit but surely trans represents only a few of the very many genders available? There’s not even agreement on what genders exist (assuming they do) so how can they possibly be protected?

Gender reassignment protection means - quite correctly in my opinion - you can’t be discriminated against compared with people of your natal sex because of gender reassignment

Zerogravity · 13/11/2022 08:35

In other words, gender reassignment does not "trump" other protected characteristics including sex.

But I quoted from the citizens advice bureau it doesn’t actually mean literally assignment it doesn’t have to be a literal thing, You have the protected characteristic of gender reassignment if you:

@Barnybrown believing that biological sex comes in two flavours - male and female - and that this is important in law, safeguarding and fairness isn’t just a belief system - it is FACT.

Gender ideology on the other hand is a belief which some believe it but the majority don’t.

But at work they do have to provide facility and mostly they will allow trans women to use women’s toilets because they can get into trouble for not doing that

Barnybrown · 13/11/2022 08:37

Ah ok - sorry Freespirit, I misread it.

The photos of the LGB Alliance conference? I found it amusing TRAs circulated photos of a Leave means Leave meeting in 2018 and claimed it was the LGB Alliance.
So incredibly disingenuous.

Such a shame hateful comments about age are allowed. Age, like same sex attraction, is a protected characteristic.

Do better.

You are wrong the picture I saw it was not a leave means leave picture it was most definitely and LGB alliance picture considering they had it on the T-shirts but do try better

swirlypinky · 13/11/2022 08:38

Maybe she doesn't have an opinion and doesn't really know much about the issues and just goes along with what she thinks is the right thing to say?

Sounds like you've been doing Stonewall training! If a company does this they are not respecting sex which is a protected characteristic!

Age is a protected characteristic you’re right but no doubt about it the majority of people in that organisation do tend to be of a certain age therefore perhaps it shows that maybe younger people are open to the fact that trans people are okay
