twitter.com/HalifaxBank/status/1541692892175110146?t=6PoJxoXZAUwWHmXRZdtsxw&s=19

Getting their arses handed to them in the comments, it's rather heartening to see that people have really had enough of this.

Although AndyM here is prepared to defend it to the hilt by actively encouraging customers to close their accounts 😬

Awkward conversation with management about the goal being bringing in customers and not telling them to bugger off for Andy in the office tomorrow perhaps!

That is a beast of a ratio.

achillestoes · 28/06/2022 19:42

I don’t really care about pronouns provided they’re requested and not enforced. But I doubt that’s the case.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 28/06/2022 19:58

It's bringing back the Barclays ad about pronouns that instructed us to educate ourselves although our understanding wasn't necessary for our compliance. I paraphrase but not that much.

It's almost as if Luntz's study had no impact. 🤔

FOJN · 28/06/2022 19:59

Ratio 1096/79. People really are fed up of this.

WooFighters · 28/06/2022 20:41

Halifax is owned by Lloyds (correct me if I'm wrong). A quick Google leads me to think that pointing out the sex of their staff is a brave move based on their gender pay gap statistics.

Their median hourly pay is 40.2% lower than men's. When comparing mean (average) hourly pay, women's mean hourly pay is 33.5% lower than men's. This is the difference between the hourly pay of the median man and the hourly pay of the median woman.

Rest assured I will be asking any he/him pronoun wearers if pointing out their sex is really appropriate when the company treats women this way.

StopStartStop · 28/06/2022 20:50

i think my pronouns are 'fuck, fuck and fuck off'.

McDuffy · 28/06/2022 21:22

Hardly any supportive comments!

KatVonlabonk · 28/06/2022 21:31

Just saw that.

Then Facebook advertised an image of a woman with mastectomy scars to try and flog me razors.

I wonder if Andy will get his arse handed to him tomorrow morning!!
It's not really good business sense to insult your customers 🤣🤣

Yet again I am sad that MN doesn't have a like button 👍👍👍👍👍👍 because this is a great post.

Circumferences · 28/06/2022 22:19

Wow.
Anyone now closing their account as advised by that pillock?

ToldItToTheBees · 28/06/2022 22:27

I genuinely think the next few years will see a quiet backing off of this sort of corporate bandwagon nonsense. Real, effective inclusion is not tweets and name tags. There are plenty of normal people in HR who realise this.

JacquelinePot · 28/06/2022 22:35

That was fun. Lots of very good comments and all Halifax can do is repeat the usual nonsense about safe spaces and inclusivity blah blah blah.

I'm not on twatter but I wish someone would ask how a bank teller having a pronoun badge "helps to create an inclusive environment for our customers and colleagues" or how it creates "a safe and accepting environment". Please, show your workings!

But most of all, I'd love to know why a bank wants to "open the conversation around gender identity". Wtf has it got to do with Halifax, and why should their paying customers gaf?!

Maybe customers are more concerned about branch closures and reduced opening hours, or access for people who can't go online. And maybe, just maybe, their staff would prefer it if the female staff earn 60p for every pound men earn. Nah, much cheaper to pridefy the logo and print some new name badges.

Some excellent replies in the Twitter thread - the links to Pronouns are Rohypnol and Halifax's sex pay gap in particular!

BootsAndRoots · 28/06/2022 23:39

A few years ago all the banks updated their apps during Pride month so that the icon was rainbow coloured.

There was a lot of criticism, Muslims and other minority religions complained, people worried it might out them, concerns over it being a phising app, forcing everyone to accept the banks belief system. They stopped after that.

For the past couple of years I haven't noticed any rainbow app icons (except Quidco).

pbj · 28/06/2022 23:42

Halifax and AndyM are trending and not for the reasons they’d like either.

Absolutely priceless. Telling customers to close their accounts if they don’t share the same “values” Grin

That is a beast of a ratio.

It's magnificent, isn't it?

Andy is going to have a headache tomorrow.

TheBiologyStupid · 29/06/2022 00:27

I do actually hope that Andy M's stupidity isn't treated too harshly. It was a tone-deaf response, but he (there I go, making assumptions about his pronouns...) presumably wasn't the idiot that dreamt up the ridiculous policy he tried to defend. And the ridicule was piling up well before his ham-fisted intervention.

Off topic, but Garden Court Chambers should take note - that's what a REAL Twitter storm threatening reputational damage looks like!

Ladyof2022 · 29/06/2022 01:55

Funny how EVERYONE knows Andy is a man without seeing what pronouns are on his badge.

sashh · 29/06/2022 04:41

OK I'm missing something, how do you see 'the ratio'?

I always find the ratio of comments to likes easier to see if I open up one of the reply trees underneath.

Both tweets have gone viral amongst those of all philosophical persuasions, so Halifax is getting some likes now. Currently the original tweet showing the badge is at 3618 Comments : 836 Likes and Andy's guidance on how to cancel one's Halifax account is at 1036 Comments: 380 Likes.

I have seven accounts with them. It's going to be a real pain to move them all. Are there any banks which don't have a gender pay gap?

SchoolFraud · 29/06/2022 06:21

Are the whole Lloyds umbrella doing the same? How many accounts do I need to move...?!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/06/2022 06:26

Doubtful.

I just tried putting all the banks I could think of into gender-pay-gap.service.gov.uk/compare-employers

Barclays came out best on this metric.

Added some more high street names to the comparison.
