Apparently Fina's ruling is "not on". Speaking at the British LGBT Awards Daley said: "I was furious. You know, like most queer people, anyone that's told that they can't do something they love just because of who they are, it's not on. It's something I feel really strongly about. Giving trans people the chance to share their side."

No one is stopping trans people competing Tom. Just stopping them from competing unfairly in the wrong sex category. Trans women are free to compete in the male category and will also be in future if sport decides to have an open category.

Should we be surprised at his attitude? Not really, after all he thinks it's OK to rent a woman's body to produce a baby for him and his partner. He seemed to know what sex was then.

He strikes me as one of those privileged gay men (who has never faced any discrimination, particularly as his coming out helped boost his career), and sees trans women as previously effeminate gay men, and not (in the case of sport) as heterosexual male chancers.

He's done interviews about the homophobic abuse he's received, so I'm not sure he'd agree with you that he's faced no discrimination.

Just wondering (not aimed at any particular poster)

Why is it that the opinion of a medal-winning Olympian who is part of the LGBT community can be dismissed (because he used a surrogate)

But.

Opinions of various misogynists (Boris Johnson, Matt Walsh) can be embraced and separated (by some) from their well-documented bigotry.

Tom was never going to lose out on an olympic medal to a transwomen in his sport. So he can keep his opinions to himself and off and let women speak on the topic

Thelnebriati · 27/06/2022 12:23

Sports are a sex affected activity. I don't understand competitors who don't support fairness in sports.

anyone that's told that they can't do something they love just because of who they are

Stunningly stupid.

A) No-one's been told here they "can't do what they love" unless "what they love" is unfairly beating women in elite competition

B) Yes, sometimes people cannot do "what they love" because other people exist and have rights. That is why we (and all societies) have things like laws and rules. It is really simple. Children understand this principle. Why can't Tom? Hmm

Are you at risk of losing out of an Olympic medal due to trans women? Should only athletes who are currently competing be allowed to comment?

AryaStarkWolf · 27/06/2022 12:26

It's wonderfully easy for all these men with no skin in the game to be outraged isn't it?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/06/2022 12:26

Seems that men stick together and women lose the team places, medals and sponsorship in favour of born males. Thanks Tom.

WildIris · 27/06/2022 12:27

... Fina's ruling is "not on"...

Wow, Tom! What a logically thought out, evidence based, scientific reason!

Sit back down. You don’t get to dictate about women’s sport.

Hoardasurass · 27/06/2022 12:27

@anystropheus for me it's because he is a man who is only concerned about the feelings of other biological males over the rights of women to fair sports and wilfully twists and misrepresents the truth add to that he has no problem with renting a woman's body when it suits him ie he knows the difference between trans women and women but only when using a woman as a walking incubator

ilovesushi · 27/06/2022 12:29

So disappointing and surprising.

Naunet · 27/06/2022 12:30

Nasty little misogynist. Next time he wants to pay a much poorer woman to risk her life and health to produce a human for him to purchase, maybe he can try a transwoman then. Dickhead.

I’m seeing ever more of this crap. Distraction tactics. Obfuscation. Detailing legitimate criticism (or even identification of any positive action) on the basis of something else (usually the spectre of the right wing bogeyman).

It’s obvious what you’re doing.

The surrogacy here is relevant to his position on this topic because it shows a man who feels entitled to what he wants, even if it requires the commodification of women’s bodies. Just as he thinks trans women should do what they want, regardless of the women disadvantaged and excluded because of it.

Thanks for your response

I don't agree that we can necessarily infer he's only concerned with biological males, but I appreciate your response.

calmlakes · 27/06/2022 12:31

anyone that's told that they can't do something they love just because of who they are

This is ridiculously immature.

Also as a gay man who has used a surrogate to have a child very unthought through. He and his partner weren't able to have a child together, something they love, because of who they were.
Male bodied people. So they used a female bodied person to produce this child for them.

That he is able to understand the difference in male and female bodies when it benefits him and oblivious to it when it doesn't is very disappointing.

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 27/06/2022 12:31

it’s arguable that this might be a big part of the appeal…

peachescariad · 27/06/2022 12:31

Oh fuck off Tom - you can't just dip in and out of biology.....oh seems like you are already - Fuck you

You think my contribution to this thread is crap. Fair enough.

I'm just curious though. Not everyone has an agenda.

And we're allowed to express differing views.

Just another man who knows what a woman is when he needs to rent one.

shame i liked him

KatVonlabonk · 27/06/2022 12:33

There was an interview the Times recently about Daley. He was telling us all about his day, which revolves around much cooking with eggs, apparently.

I was most amused to see the Times disclaimer that he's sponsored by an egg company.

I'm still cringing.

Guys got his (L) GBTQ+++++++++++ appearance to keep up right? Cause he's going to shit on women.

FOJN · 27/06/2022 12:36

The lies themselves tell you these people know they are lying.

I must have missed the headline which said, "trans people banned from doing things they love".

Fuck off you exploiter of women's bodies.

Braggiography · 27/06/2022 12:37

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 27/06/2022 12:08

Well, this is much more likely to influence the public’s opinion on Tom Daley than the public’s opinion on penis people in women’s sports.

Good. Fuck over your legacy, Tom. Maybe people will reconsider their thoughts on surrogacy with the knowledge that you’re a misogynist.

Yes, agreed.

'anyone that's told that they can't do something they love just because of who they are, it's not on'

Like 'men can't get pregnant and birth children'?

ApplesandBunions · 27/06/2022 12:39

Bwahahahaha

WellThatsMeScrewed · 27/06/2022 12:39

Tom - why don’t you compete against women? Who would win if you were competing against women in all your competitions?

Why do you have mixed sex classes? Please answer that and then use that information to deduce why women don’t feel it’s fair to compete against transwomen.

We are not discriminating against the trans community, we only wish them well. But as women we have the right to defend our right to fair sport. Please don’t get these two mixed up.
